Sure, it’s never going to hurt getting signed to the mighty Roots Manuva’s Banana Klan label and mentored by the daddy of UK hip-hop himself. It’s a pretty big advantage when you get invited on the famous Manuva Awfully Deep and Slime and Reason tours. It’s pretty advantageous to your career when hip-hop legends Ghostface Killer, Dilated Peoples and Ugly Duckling book you for their tours, for that matter. And it’s pretty sweet releasing tracks with the likes of dancehall heavyweights Ricky Ranking and Tippa Irie, not to mention überproducers The Nextmen and reggae super-group Pama International.
But who you know is only going to get you so far. You’ve got to ask yourself why these guys are so keen to work with this startlingly talented young man from East London. Perhaps it’s his effortlessly fresh combination of modern UK hip-hop and sweet reggae. Or his smart lyrics, magnetic charisma and expert delivery. Maybe they recognized from his early underground days with Ray Keith and Genuwine that Jimmy Screech had ‘breakthrough artist’ written all over him.
Whatever it is about Jimmy Screech that got the industry so excited has now reached full fruition. A new album, The Remedy, is penciled in for a Summer 2009 release, and is being accompanied by a run of relentless live shows.
