Andrew Vaughan – Artist’s Statement
Having graduated from Loughborough University College of Art and Design in 1995 with a BA hons in Fine Art Painting, I continued my studies at the University of Central England, becoming a postgraduate in art education. In addition to my painting, I am currently working as a Learning and Interpretation Manager at Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and as a freelance educator and arts consultant.
The main source my paintings are derived from is the landscape, with influences ranging from my love of North Wales and Cornish landscapes to building sites and townscapes.
Through thoughtful observation of shapes and marks seen in preparatory photographs and drawings my paintings evolve abtractly, exploring colour, tone, line and composition.
The landscape is used only as a starting point, the central structure allowing ideas to be developed directly on the canvas. Bursts of energetic painting, combining activity with intuition are followed by periods of reflection. I intend the finished paintings not to represent a realistic scene, but to create a memory of a place I’ve visited, evoking feelings of mood and atmosphere
Formulating a technique that explores colour, tone, space and light through brushstrokes and line marks is an essential and integral part of my work as a painter. I try to incorporate disciplined structure with spontaneous expressionism, attempting to acquire a visual language through the medium of paint. I view my painting as a language that continuously develops, with each canvas acting as a visual reference point. A reference point that influences future works to search for new and better ways of expressing my emotions and ideas.
My paintings and drawings have been included in numerous national group and solo exhibitions since 1994, winning several awards and grants. I have sold work to corporate and private collections nationally and internationally, including commissions for companies such as Capital Bank, Wetherspoons PLC, HSBC, The Hilton, Indigo Art, and The Redrow Group.
