Colorama [+]

Friday 11th February – £4 Entry

Utter the word Colorama to any serious indie music fan and you’ll get a knowing wink or firm handshake. Why? Because group leader Carwyn Ellis composes, plays and sings some of the most awe inspiring and beautiful songs heard this decade. So why have you not heard of him? Perhaps, because until now he has only really been spoken about with hushed tones by label folk, PR, broadcasters, journalists, fellow musos and festival goers who know a good thing when they see and hear it – but as far as mainstream success goes Colorama are a little known name outside their native Wales.

As an in demand musician Carwyn may have worked with Oasis, Shane MacGowan and Edywn Collins, amongst others, but it’s his own Cardiff based group Colorama that really deserve the most attention. Believe me. The cover of new album Box may proudly – and loudly – state where the reference points come from musically, but the depth of the performances, musicianship, song writing and production leave all competition standing at the starting line.

Holy Coves [+]

£4 Entry

From the ashes of Holyhead shoegaze rockers The Lizzies, Holy Coves first began to blossom in spring 2009. The remaining duet of Scott Marsden and Jimmy Eggleton were intent on bringing fresh and innovative ideas to the new project. Both held similar influences, though the subtle differences between would soon help bring depth and originality to their sound.

…Several months passed, with hour upon hour spent in their purposely-adapted barn, thrashing out new sounds, structures and compositions. Soon there was more clarity, and a more focused direction to the music. Now they knew where they wanted to go, how they wanted to sound and how they wanted Holy Coves to be perceived. So all that remained was finding the missing pieces to the puzzle.

Enter drummer Ash Garden, closely followed by former Wendykurk guitarist Ben Lee. Suddenly something was different, as if catalyst and chemicals had begun some great reaction. The music became darker, held more of a groove, and had a life and soul of its own. With electrifying atmosphere and a silent vibe emanating from the band, the music had energy and raw power. Everyone knew something had clicked.

Now truly born, Holy Coves continued to develop, creating a fusion of driven amps and heavy distortion, welded with a psychedelic, pitch-shifting tremolo. Complimented by articulate song writing and meticulous structures, a blend of psych rock and sexy, sleazy rock ‘n’ roll emerged. And with it a sound well received as they toured some of the finest, most prestigious venues on British unsigned circuit.

So ask the band what they’re all about and the answer is always the same. “Reality”. Far from false, manufactured or cynical, Holy Coves are about real musicians playing real music for real people. Four regular guy’s all sharing the same vision, and the same belief in what they’re doing, driven by the same determination and will to succeed. Just like singer-songwriter Scott Marsden says: “If you really want something, if you have the drive to carry on where others fail, and if you have the ability to see clearly in a world of deceit, then anything is possible…”

The Wildcards [+]

£4 Entry

Arguably, the most original and exciting British Blues & Roots band of recent years. The Wildcards have a widespread and growing following, built from constant touring and appearing at many of the biggest and most prestigious venues and festivals on the European Blues circuit. With three critically
acclaimed albums under their belt the band may now be poised on the edge of real acclaim.

The Wildcards strength lies in the very real, jaw-dropping, intense, high energy live performances given at every show by vocalist and guitarist Vince Lee, guitarist Martin Vowles, bass player Al Wallis and drummer Kevin Crowe.

“The Wildcards are fronted by the explosive Vince Lee, who puts out more energy than Sizewell-B Power Station, they defy pigeon-holing. ‘Rocka-punkabilly-power-swing-blues, devilish, filthy, passionate!’ Throw in a world-class band, and what have you got? Barely restrained insanity and
deeply wonderful music” Ashburton Blues Festival, UK The Wildcards were formed in 2003, a coming together of four talented and experienced South
Devon musicians who had previously toured in over 20 countries with the widely popular bands The Nightporters and Vince Lee’s Big Combo. Heavily immersed in obscure blues, jazz, rockabilly, ska, punk and musical weirdness, The Wildcards have distilled their sound into a spicy, dark, delicious
gumbo that they really can call their own. Blues In Britain magazine called it “Musical mayhem worthy of Screaming Jay Hawkins or Louis Jordan…yes, it’s that good!”

Danny Bryant’s Red Eye Band [+]

Friday 25th February – £4 Entry

Danny Bryant was born in Hertfordshire England in July 1980. First hailed as a ‘young guitar prodigy’ Danny began playing guitar aged 15, turning professional just three years later, and in the last decade has paid his dues clocking up endless miles of travelling and approximately two thousand shows in many countries around the world. After a decade of hard toil he now gets the recognition he so well deserves, being acknowledged by those in the business as one of the cream of the crop of this generation of blues artists, ably backed by his rhythm section of his father Ken on bass and Trevor Barr on drums.

In a career that has seen Danny perform on the same bill as such names as Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana, Greg Allman, Walter Trout, Buddy Guy, Peter Green, and former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor to mention just a few, Danny and his band have steadily carved a huge and loyal fan base around the world.

So far the band have released six internationally acclaimed CDs, their fourth release ‘Days Like This’ featured a stunning duet with special guest blues legend Walter Trout (John Lee Hooker, Canned Heat, John Mayall) The following year saw Danny signing a deal with premier label Rounder Records, a home to many blues legends.

The band’s first album for Rounder/Continental ”Live” hit the I-Tunes top ten blues charts in 6 countries, including Italy (where it is the labels most successful blues release) Holland, Belgium and Germany leading to major festival appearances and sold out club dates all across Europe. A track from ‘Live’ was included on a compilation CD released by Virgin/Emi entitled ”The Best Blues Album In The World Ever” Danny appeared alongside many giants of music, including Johnny Winter, Gary Moore, Albert Collins, George Thorogood and ZZ Top. In March 2008 the band released “Black and White” a commercial and critical success, as the album garnered glowing approval from Europe’s leading music press and guitar magazines, as well as features, reviews, and articles in highly respected publications including The Independent, Classic Rock Magazine and Mojo- leading to the band’s biggest selling album so far and a year of relentless touring which has seen them play 100 shows in 12 different countries.

January 2010 will see the release of their 7th CD, entitled ‘Just As I Am’; this album is the high point of Danny’s recording career so far, being his deepest and most powerful work yet.  It has set new standards within the band, and will delight their many fans! Scheduled release date 20th January 2010.

Spokes (Ninja Tune) [+]

£4 Entry

Spokes are originally from the rolling hills of North East England, which perhaps explains the rustic feel of their reverb-soaked, violin-coated sound. Their mini album ‘People Like People Like You’ caused great excitement in the independent press, receiving ‘album of the week’ status on Boomkat and glittering reviews on Don’t Panic and Angry Ape. Their ambitious live performances combine field recordings and accidental noise with a delicate but powerful five piece band. Spokes are currently working on their debut long player for Counter Records.

Brought together in 2006 in Preston by a combination of boyhood friendships, family ties and a relentless love of recording and touring. Critics have praised them for their grand sound, buoyed by bittersweet joy and devastating lows. While sounding like a band with much more than 5 members they go from euphoric noise to moments of intense stillness. While drawing upon folk, shoegaze, slowcore and post-rock their music is always distilled down into something distinctly their own.

In 2007 they recorded their debut EP People Like People Like You which combined their off-kilter indie with more flowing structures influenced by post-rock and classical music. And it sold out quickly. The release also lead to an appearance on the main stage at the Big Chill festival where People Like People Like You quickly sold out at the Rough Trade stall. They also won the Sound 2008 competition and played at Rockness.

This frenzied activity eventually caught the attention of Ninja Tune (and XFM who had them as a new band of the year) and their indie imprint Counter Records, who re-released People Like People Like You in the spring of 2009. Having played at the End Of The Road festival in the summer Spokes then returned to their countryside residence somewhere in the North-East of England to finish work on their first album proper. This time introducing intricate vocal harmonies and more complex arrangements. Spokes’ meticulous attention to detail and feel lends their songs a lush sound that has a clear respect for the classics, taking inspiration from artists such as Neil Young and Kate Bush.

The song ‘Torn Up In Praise’ was taken from early recordings for the album and included in the Counter Records sampler, it was warmly received by Clash magazine for it’s grand take on indie-rock. Similarly, when NME chose to run a feature on the Ninja Tune label a Spokes demo entitled simply as ‘Daisy’ was included as a featured download alongside label-mates Jaga Jazzist and Andeya Triana.

‘We Can Make It Out’ is the first single to be lifted from the upcoming album ‘Everyone I Ever Met’, and it’s unique choral vocals typify the energy of the record as a whole. It comes with a video by director Dan Lowe who himself has already achieved notoriety with a promo for Field Music which was nominated by RADAR for best budget video last year alongside luminaries such as Spike Jonze. The single is expected to be released in November this year with launch dates in London, Newcastle and across the UK.
