Dead Rock West (USA) [+]

Friday 11th March – £4 Entry

“X meets Wilco? A dream combination for fans of roots-inspired, punk-spirited rock, and one that somehow congeals in Dead Rock West.” – Ventura County Reporter

Dead Rock West’s debut album, Honey and Salt, incorporates elements of country-rock, power-pop jangle and straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll to create an eclectic sound so captivating and exciting that it grabs you from the first note, and holds you to the very last. Their fresh, original sound is impossible to ignore as their extraordinary musicianship, passionate vocals and lyrical proficiency create incredible hooks and harmonies that will be forever burned in your soul.

The vocal harmonies on Honey and Salt stand out from the beginning, as the rich, silky melodies capture the essence of the band’s already impressive sound; adding subtle nuances of raw emotion to the accomplished songwriting. Although this is Dead Rock West’s debut album, it seems as if the band has been together for decades due, in part, to their impressive credentials.

The band:

Born into a musical family, Cindy Wasserman (vox, tambourine) is no stranger to either stage or studio (her brother is two-time Grammy Award winner Rob Wasserman). She has recorded and toured with Grant Lee Phillips, John Doe; Rickie Lee Jones and Mark Olson.

Frank Lee Drennen (vocals, guitar, harmonica) has spent time in a number of groups including Loam and Stewboss, as well as working with troubadour Gregory Page and former Alarm guitarist, Dave Sharp.

David J. Carpenter has toured and recorded with Toni Childs, John Doe, Mark Olson and Grant Lee Phillips. He is equally adept on both electric & double bass.

Drummer Bryan Head, has toured and recorded with The Plimsouls, John Doe, Shelby Lynne, Peter Case and Abandoned Pools to name a few.

Phil Parlapiano (mandolin, octave mandolin, Hammond organ, Vox Continental), previously with Brothers Figaro, has recorded and performed with John Prine, Grant Lee Buffalo, Tracy Chapman, Rod Stewart, Social Distortion, and many others.

Honey and Salt was recorded at Grandma’s Warehouse in Echo Park, CA the way they used to do it; 2” tape, 24 tracks, no click tracks or pitch correction machines, and mixed by Grammy Award winner, Richard Dodd (Dixie Chicks, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Steve Earle, Traveling Wilburys etc.). Rounding out the warmth of the album, The Section Quartet (Sam Phillips, Wilco, David Bowie, etc) added their internationally renowned talents to the closing track on the album, “All I Know”, and pedal steel guitarist, Greg Leisz (Wilco, Paul Westerburg, Sheryl Crow, etc.) provides his distinctive style to the tracks “Going Home” and “All I Know”.

Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six [+]

Saturday 12th March – £4 Entry

‘Get Religion Tour 2011′

An incredible band with a very theatrical take on delta stomping blues.

Many believe that the number of love songs in the world far outstrip the number of things with which one can fall in love. That is why Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six are doing their very best to readdress the balance, penning twisted dirt-swing about lust and loathing, served up on an exuberant gobbet of malicious delight.
Stories about grieving lovers, thieving lovers and deceiving lovers seep from their songbook like a putrescent parade of painful parables. It’s strangely beautiful – but not very.

Excellent in every way” – BBC 6 music

Inspired by the Blues, infused with a hard hitting, “in-yer-face” rock approach and topped-off by virtuoso musicianship, Ben Poole is being talked of as “the” new up-and-coming UK Blues guitarist; one of the finest to have emerged in Europe for years. Dave Sharp (The Alarm) Solo Show [+]

Free Entry

1989 saw the US release coast-to-coast hit album, Change, and #1 AOR single, ‘Sold Me Down the River’, from British rock band, The Alarm. Sadly, 1991 saw the surprise departure of the band’s lead singer…

Dave Sharp, co-founder of The Alarm had that previous year enlisted the help of legendary maverick record producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Willie Nelson & Leonard Cohen) to help cut his first solo record. It was a determined young man who walked through the doors at The Hit Factory NYC in December 1990, and in under a week Sharp’s album Hard Travlin’ had been recorded, mixed and delivered for release to IRS Records.

A relentless two-year period of Stateside touring followed including appearances at Farm Aid concerts and Earth Day celebrations before Sharp returned to New York City in 1992 to perform for an audience of 25,000 gathered in Central Park to celebrate the 80th birthday of folk legend Woody Guthrie. It was a seminal event for Dave Sharp who performed alongside Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Billy Bragg and shared the stage with The Right Reverend Jessie Jackson.

In 1996 Sharp once again teamed up with producer Bob Johnston entering Credence Clearwater Revival’s studio in San Francisco to record and release his second solo album, Downtown America. Two underground hits followed, ‘The Ghost of Preacher Casey’ and ‘Give Me Back My Job’, which both received healthy rotation across the board at American radio and led to television appearances on country music’s Nashville Network.

Sharp returned to the UK in 2002 to record his third solo album, The Power of Soul, released on Manchester’s Townsend Records, successfully re-introducing him to British audiences and earning him solo recognition across the UK with British music critics.

Dave Sharp’s solo albums have received positive critical recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and over the past decade and a half Sharp has been fortunate to work alongside many of the artists he has long respected. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash have appeared on his recordings. He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner. Whether solo or with a band, guitar in hand, Dave Sharp delivers the ”Spirit of Rock & Roll.”

His music has been described as everything from folk and blues to rock, country and punk; his performances as everything from legendary to lousy. However one word can never be used to describe Dave Sharp: ”Predictable.”

Dave Sharp has embraced mainstream popular culture whilst at the same time remaining one step away from its grasp . . . he likes it that way!

‘It’s a Mighty Hard Road to be Travlin’ Down.’ Dave Sharp writes it, sings it and lives it.

Big Finn [+]

£4 Entry

BigFinn – the sounds created by this team refer directly to the land of ethereal music, nebular, and fabulous. Variablerate, quasi-theatrical insertions or complex, irregular structures of individual compositions seem to confirm these effects. But do not give up too easily or confuse the feelings. Because the primary and the natural environment of this music is an alternative space.

The Reads [+]

£4 Entry

‘Stories From The Border’ – Album Launch

Fresh from recording their debut album ‘Stories from the Border’ with top Producer Jim Spencer (The Charlatans, New Order, The Cribs, Jonny Marr, Kid British) working alongside Joe Duddell (string and brass arranger extraordinaire for the likes of Elbow and James)… ‘the reads’ make a welcome return to their favourite local venue – bringing a bag full of regressive/progressive/electro/folk/rock with them!

Having been together (in some form or other) for 10 years, the band finally had the opportunity to record their first album in Summer/Autumn of 2010, fulfilling a lifelong dream… with a little help from their friends.  Each song evolved and improved throughout the recording process, which just got better and better.  The string and brass arrangements on several of the tracks were the icing on the cake… and watching them being performed by professional, classical musicians was all a bit too much to take in!!

The finished album is something that the band are really proud of and - after such a fantastic experience - the reads are preparing for 2011 to be a great year and hope to share their music with as many people as possible.

Aynsley Lister – rescheduled date [+]

£10 Ticket

tickets from november 2010 cancelled show will be honoured – contact venue for info

http://www.aynsleylister.co.uk/

“Superb” – THE TIMES

Aynsley has never been an artist to reheat the music of yesteryear. Influenced from an early age by the 60’s RnB era, Lister takes these key elements and mixes them with a more current and melodic lyrical approach.

He is one of very few artists playing rocking blues with a modern edge -tangible, heartfelt, soul searching and full of fine songwriting; played with passion and vitality. His hard hitting rhythms and guitar work are reminiscent of a young Clapton.

Since signing to Ruf Records, Lister has recorded four solo studio albums, and two live albums – one solo acoustic and one along with a live DVD for Germanys ROCKPALAST TV show. He has sold over 75,000 records and now headlines many of the major festivals throughout Europe where he has played alongside blues legends such as Buddy Guy, John Mayall, and Robert Cray aswell as big name pop artists such as Bryan Adams and Fun Lovin’ Criminals. His recorded work has seen him working with Producers Jim Gaines (Santana, SRV) and Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia)

In more recent times 2006 saw Lister recording in Clarksdale, Mississippi and Memphis Tennessee where he worked again with Jim Gaines on the Ruf Records collaboration ‘Pilgrimage’. With Gaines producing Lister debut for the label in 1999, it was almost 7 years to the month that they had previously worked together. In September of that year his album ‘Everything I Need’ was released stateside in preparation for this years debut tour.

UPSIDE DOWN is Lister’s fourth studio album and his first to contain all originals. Every aspect and quality that his fans have now come to expect is there, from the raunchy guitar, the melodic voice to the infectious songs but to simply pronounce this release another worthwhile effort would be an injustice indeed: The result is his strongest, boldest and most compelling album to date that could quite easily crossover into the mainstream

“His best album ever” – GET READY TO ROCK

“Deft lyrical touch and musical feel” – ZEITGEIST

“Upside Down’ is a great album” – GUITARIST MAGAZINE

“Bursting with killer riffs and songs” – CLASSIC ROCK

In reality his career is just getting started – he has the ability to reach such a wide-ranging audience from teenagers to folks who grew up in a time when real artists mattered. Right now Aynsley Lister has everything he needs to turn the world upside down…
