The Bulawayo Band (Zimbabwe) [+]

Saturday 14th May – £4 Entry

The infectious music of Bulawayo, Cecilia Ndhlovu’s entrancing mbira thumb-piano and hypnotic and joyous Ndebele and Shona vocals take listeners on an educational journey through Zimbabwean tradition. Driven by classic jit-jive guitar and rolling chimurenga bass matched with the powerful drum patterns of modern Zimbabwe, the classic sound of Bulawayo has arrived.

Cecilia grew up in Bulawayo in Matabeleland, southern Zimbabwe. She learned to dance at school where because of her natural talent she was known as ‘magida omncane’ or little dancer.  When she was 16 she joined the national dance troupe Black Umfolosi and several years later she began to sing, dance and tour the world with one of Zimbabwe’s biggest stars, Oliver Mtukudzi. She worked with Oliver for 6 years and recorded 5 albums before moving to England.

After entertaining audiences at ‘The London African Music Festival 2010′ and now with a four strong line up of mbira, lead guitar, bass and drumkit the group reflects the sound of modern Zimbabwe with a universal energy that appeals to all

Frank Turner’s meteoric rise to success continues this year with news of award nominations, special intimate shows, festival appearances and details of a fourth studio album scheduled for release this summer.

It’s going to be another exceptional year…

As well as being confirmed for a plethora of exciting UK, US and European festivals – including headlining the Third Stage at Download Festival on 12th June and headlining Blissfields on 1st July – the summer will see the release of highly anticipated studio album number four.  Recorded in Crouch End’s stunning Church Studios, Frank has laid down fifteen tracks with his band Ben, Nigel, Tarrant and Matt and producer Tristan Ivemy for a record with the quintessential English sound he has been searching for.

Unsurprisingly for an artist who spends the majority of his time travelling around the world, this album has a nostalgic feel to it – an homage to his homeland, friends and family he often has to leave behind.

With the acoustic guitar very much at its core, the album is more folky than predecessor ‘Poetry Of The Deed’ and even includes an a cappella song done in a traditional English style. Featuring contributions from ex-Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay, folk singers Emily Barker and Chris T-T, and Unbelievable Truth’s Andy Yorke, he covers themes of mortality, relationships and religion in what is a bold, ballsy yet beautiful album.

Information on release date and album title to come soon.

Before that though is the exciting news that Frank has been nominated for two NME Awards. Firstly for the impressive Best Solo Artist alongside Paul Weller, Florence And The Machine, Laura Marling and Kanye West and secondly for Best Band Blog or Twitter for recognising Frank’s openness with his fans. To celebrate the nominations Frank played a very intimate show at London’s Borderline on 18th February and is currently on a short jaunt round the country playing rescheduled shows and special one-offs. All dates listed below.

The past twelve months has seen Frank reach new dizzying heights of success that has included a support slot for Green Day at the vast Wembley Stadium in June; scooping the prestigious ‘Spirit Of Independence’ Kerrang! Award in August and headlining a sold out Brixton Academy show back in December; as well as spending the year touring extensively not just in the UK, Europe and America but also as far a field as New Zealand, Australia and China.

It’s a far cry from his tentative beginnings five years ago when, after the demise of previous band Million Dead, Frank took to the road as a fledgling solo artist armed only with an acoustic guitar. With a DIY work ethic, and a passion for plying his trade with integrity and honesty Frank toured up and down the country playing backs of pubs, people’s front rooms and anywhere else that would have him. With a handful of catchy folk/country/punk songs and enough charm and charisma to win over any crowd, he amassed more and more fans and a fevered cult following soon formed.

With the support and backing from Indie label Xtra Mile Recordings in the UK, Frank has slowly but surely blossomed from an underground hero to a bona fide mainstream success story. And this is now starting to be echoed internationally with the help from US indie label Epitaph Records who Frank signed to in 2009. Having released previous albums ‘Poetry Of The Deed’ and ‘Love Ire & Song’ and got Frank out on the road on US tours with the Offspring and Social Distortion, Frank’s popularity across the Atlantic is growing and growing selling out his own headlining shows including the famous Troubadour venue in LA.

With the release of his new album and a summer chock full of gigs and festival appearances 2011 is shaping up very nicely indeed and Frank’s path to total world domination will continue apace.

Expect great things…

Special Guest DJ Ole Smokey

http://soundcloud.com/ole-smokey

The Blues Missiles are undoubtedly one of the most exciting new blues bands to hit the road in recent years. Drawing on over eighty years combined gigging experience, the band’s personnel undoubtedly have what it takes to impress. Based in North Wales, The Blues Missiles are a firm favourite at local venues and are have become a ‘Must See’ on the UK blues circuit following appearances at the Nantwich Jazz & Blues festival, the Dragon Blues festival, & the Prestatyn Jazz & Blues festival. The band’s set contains a mix of original material and well-established standards, complementing an extensive catalogue of ‘Texas Blues’ material.

The Blues Missiles are

Andy Jones – Drums

Andy, a long time professional, has been the powerhouse behind

a number of well-known touring bands including ‘Primitive Faith’ The Heat’ and most recently ‘Tansard’.

Pete Thompson – Bass & Vocals

Pete, with over twenty five years of live experience behind him, is the ’old man’ of the line up. He has been the cornerstone of many bands including ‘The Heat’ ‘ Autumn Rhode’ Zoot Serious and the Belly Full of Bop and the highly acclaimed Texas Blues and Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute – ‘The Madison Blues Band’

Simon Mills – Guitars & Vocals

Simon is the latest addition to the Missiles line up. His technical ability is more than matched by his passion for swing and blues. Simon is able to switch styles from Hollywood Fats to Billy Gibbons to Stevie Ray Vaughan whilst retaining an inimitable style of his own.

Paul Fisher – Harps & keyboards

Well known on the blues circuit Paul is best known for his work with The Hill Street blues band. Paul’s harp playing is reminiscent of Kim Wilson and Rod Piazza but has Paul’s individual stamp all over it. Paul also plays keyboards with the band and don’t be surprised if he picks up a guitar and sings in the future.

The Martin Harley Band [+]

Friday 20th May – £4 Entry

The Martin Harley Band are a uniquely talented acoustic trio whose musical palette incorporates all the best roots music styles, from blues to jazz to folk, yet are masters of their own art. With tender acoustic balladry, hot-blooded blues, complex rhythms and gorgeous three-part harmonies, and an almost boundless energy, the Martin Harley Band effortlessly challenge expectations of what a three-piece should be capable of.

Having spurred prominent music magazines to proclaim them “shining talents in the British acoustic scene…definitely ones to watch” (Guitarist Magazine) and declare “In the Martin Harley Band the future of British roots and blues is assured” (Blues Nights), there now appears to be a healthy buzz growing around the band. With an ever-expanding fanbase, reams of plaudits and acclaim, and a constantly ascendant profile, this band are beginning to reap the rewards for years of toil.

Unwilling to wait for lady luck to find them, the band have always preferred to gig and tour almost incessantly. Audiences across the world can attest to the energetic entertainment spectacle that is a Martin Harley Band gig.

As a live act, the Martin Harley Band have a pedigree that takes some beating. Every show, no matter how many they play, is an event, be it in the intimacy of a tiny West-Country pub or the grandeur of the Royal Albert Hall. In the past year or so, they have notched up scores of UK gigs from Penzance to Shetland, yet still miraculously found time for tours in France, Germany, Italy, Barbados and Australia.

Ra Ra Riot, Idlewild, The Spinto Band, Islands, The Futureheads, Ed Harcourt, Hot club de Paris, The Thrills, Someone still loves you Boris Yeltsin & Clinic as well as playing at last years Glastonbury festival and the incredible Secret garden party.

King King [+]

Tuesday 24th May – Tickets £10.00

“Softly softly” is not a maxim that King King are familiar with. Since surging into life two years ago they have barely stopped for breath, and their electrifying sound and scorching live shows have generated more of a thunderous roar than a buzz.

Straight out of the blocks it was clear that King King is a band which knows how to make an entrance. An exhilarating debut at the Monaghan Blues Festival created such a stir that it prompted organizer Somhairle MacConghail to remark: “King King aren’t just playing the festival. Word is that King King ARE the festival”. With a reception like this there’s little surprise that the phone has been ringing off the hook ever since, and the last year has seen them bring their inimitable brand of multi-faceted blues rock to the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival, the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, Abertillery Festival and even Glastonbury. This was in addition to a seemingly non-stop series of rousing live shows across the UK and Europe, much to the delight of the band’s burgeoning fan base.

In the midst of all this, a particular highlight of 2010 was King King’s invitation to perform within the hallowed walls of the BBC’s Maida Vale studios. The boys’ set went out on Radio 2 and won the approval of DJ and blues aficionado Paul Jones who was moved to remark: “Here at Radio 2, we think Alan Nimmo and King King are going to go all the way”.

Having signed to Manhaton Records, next came a return to Chapel Studios to record the eagerly anticipated debut album. King King are familiar faces having recorded their critically acclaimed EP Broken Heal at the studio, and again collaborated with the production team behind the Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and the Editors.
The resulting album, Take My Hand, is a bold and wildly enjoyable collection of songs showcasing King King’s unique sound, swaggering from Stones-tinged blues rock through throbbing funk to reflective ballad and back.

The Jon Amor Blues Group [+]

Saturday 28th May – £4 Entry

UK vocalist and guitarist Jon Amor, formerly of award-winning British band The Hoax, has joined forces with long-time collaborators Dave Doherty, Chris Doherty and Mark Barrett to form Jon Amor Blues Group.

Drawing inspiration from the Blues greats of the past like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, as well as more contemporary acts like Black Keys and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the group’s sound is powerful, raw and uncompromising.  Having spent the last ten years honing his skills as a song-writer and solo performer, Amor returns to his blues roots with JABG and the band is the perfect vehicle for the guitar-playing which brought him to prominence with The Hoax during the nineties.

Brothers Dave Doherty (guitar) and Chris Doherty (bass) have served in Amor’s band for the last 5 years, appearing on the 2009 album “Stories From The Crooked Room”, and bring a youthful exuberance as well as dynamic musicianship to Jon Amor Blues Group. Having played with Amor in The Hoax and in subsequent years, Mark Barrett is regarded as one of the finest blues drummers in the UK and is the perfect ‘engine’ for the band’s sound.

Jon Amor Blues Group have released 4 brand new tracks, available as free downloads from www.jonamorbluesgroup.co.uk and already the energy and power of the band’s sound is causing a stir throughout the UK and Europe. The band plans to record and release a full album of original material in 2011.
