Shy & The Fight [+]

Free admission before 9pm, £4 thereafter

http://www.shyandthefight.net/

“They’re a multi-legged, multi-instrumented scramble up the precipitous slopes of 20-something hearts, driven along by melodies that’d tan your backside if you dared to flag. There’s nothing to buck trends here. We have acoustic guitars, a banjo, a glockenspiel, a melodica. Someone is making interesting electronic sounds and there is percussion. I think. But reducing bands to their constituent parts is like sniffily suggesting Monet and Picasso are similar because their palette all comes from blends of the primary colours. It’s how you arrange these sounds and the greater picture to which they are constituent parts that determines the quality.

So, after something of a misfiring start that sounds like an unfinished Tuung b-side, we’re treated to some rather unforgettable songs. Chief songwriter, Thomas, looks a bit McCartney and just like that doe-eyed boy, he has a real melodic gift. Look, I’m not saying he’s as good. That kind of praise doesn’t help anyone. It’s just something that crosses my mind as song after song latches onto me like a stickybob. I’m still humming them days later. How often, truly, does that happen?” Adam Walton BBC Wales

Peter Bruntnell [+]

Saturday 6th August

Free admission before 9pm, £4 thereafter

When NME claimed that “Peter Bruntnell’s records should be taught in schools”, they were referring to the particular appeal of the quiet Devonian’s songwriting craft. First coming to public attention with 2005′s “Normal For Bridgewater”, Bruntnell was initially categorized in the “alt-country” bracket, but his restless musical spirit has meant each successive album striking out in new directions. 2009′s “Peter And The Murder Of Crows”, filled with psychedelic drones and mellifluous tunes, was Americana Album Of The Month in MOJO Magazine and one of Q magazine’s Americana Albums Of The Year.

“Bruntnell has a remarkable knack for turning out big, dreamy, melodic, memorable songs” – Mojo

“His songs are warm and beautifully radiant” – Uncut

“One of the finest songwriters in Britain” – The Independent

“His songs should be taught in schools” – NME

“One of England’s best kept musical secrets” – Rolling Stone

The Targets [+]

Free Entry

the targets are…

loud…

angst driven…

mod punk…

they don’t want to change the world, just tell it like it is…

these grey times

After 6 years of crafting their sound and their songs, after setbacks and heartaches, crap demo’s and shit takes, the targets are ready to explode on to the international scene…

And with youth on their side, the question the world should be asking isn’t “do they want it”… but “do you want it?”… and my god you will!

The Redlands Palomino Company [+]

Free admission before 9pm, £4 thereafter

Recently nominated for Best Americana Act at forthcoming British Country Music Awards.

With DJ Jon Nelson

The UK’s finest purveyors of beautifully crafted country rock, The Redlands Palomino Company, return after a four year hiatus with the eagerly awaited and utterly brilliant new album, Don’t Fade (released on Clubhouse Records on June 13th). With the husband-and-wife
partnership of Hannah and Alex Elton-Wall once again to the fore on nine new tracks alongside a sublime cover of The Dillards classic ‘One A.M.,’ Don’t Fade will delight the bands countrywide fanbase and undoubtedly entice new listeners alike to the sounds of one of the UK’s most treasured groups.
After recording their first two albums in London with well respected producers Brian O’Shaunghessy (Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine), Sean Read (Beth Orton, Pete Greenwood) and Chris Clarke (Jim Jones Revue, Madam), for Don’t Fade the band decided on a different approach. Opting to buy a stash of recording equipment and decamp to the countryside, the album was produced in-house by Alex Elton-Wall and recorded over an extended period in rural Wiltshire and the Wye Valley. As Alex explains, “This change in environment resulted in a totally relaxed and laid back band, with the time and space to play purely for the love of the music – which shines through on the organic sound of this recording.” Essentially an ‘as live’ recording the band have been able to create a definable link to their amazing live performances as well as giving these classic songs room to breath and come to life. What makes ‘The Redlands’ such a loved and cherished live band is what will ultimately define Don’t Fade as one of the great records of 2011.
