A Shrewdness Of Apes [+]

Free admission before 9pm, £4.00 thereafter

With DJ Tony Bear

Live Blues outfit from Chester featuring the vocals of the mighty yet  powerful Mercy Elise Birch and the gritty down and dirty Charlie Goodfella joined by a smattering of drums, a hankering of Hammond, a tinkling of ivory a blast of brass and a thrumming of guitar and bass… i don’t know where all these units of measuring are coming from… but who cares its all about the music.

These guys are reknowned for their rousing beerhall renditions and of classic and contemporary blues with a bit of Creedence thrown in for good measure.  I’m off to the bar, see you on the dancefloor!

So, it is with great delight we can announce that on Friday October 7th and Saturday October 8th 2011, Chester will see the start of a great new Warehouse custom, with the launch of our first ever beer festival.

With over 30 regional and national real ales and ciders on offer over the course of the weekend, as well as our usual selection of national and international beers, it promises to be a fantastic weekend. Throw in a selection of the best Live Music acts from Chester and the surrounding areas, including the likes of The Rusty Cadillacs, Mark Henderson, Me & Deboe and Shifty Chicken Shed and the party is already in full swing. To finish off the mix we will also be serving an extended range of snacks including an outside marquee with a hog roast.

Entry is based on our usual weekend club night, free before 9pm and £4 on the door after with the event running from 6 pm on the Friday until close at 2 am, from 12 noon on Saturday until close at 2am. http://www.myspace.com/societymusic

Since forming in 2004 Society have supported many great visiting artistes when they toured the UK, opening for notable musicians and performers such as Eve Selis, Deadstring Brothers, Corb Lund, Luke Doucet and The Wailin’ Jennys. Apart from their own UK headline shows, Society have completed two tours of Canada along with a string of dates in the American mid-west gaining a whole new legion of fans in the USA. This constant touring has honed both their musical and vocal chops and in the winter of 2008 Society left their disused stable that served as their rehearsal space and spent time at The Brickhouse Studios near Brighton recording their debut release entitled SONGS FROM THE BRICKHOUSE. The album is a collection of eleven original songs from the pen of Matt Wise and arranged by all three band members. Guest musicians helping out on the recording included Spencer Cullum, a member of the Deadstring Brothers who is one of the foremost young pedal steel players around today, Dave Berliner and James Batchelar on keyboards and the glorious violin of the classically trained musician Sarah Gonputh. The songs on the album echo their love of all things West Coast, Laurel Canyon and the great country rock music of the early seventies yet bringing their sound right up to date with a distinct indie feel.

Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six [+]

Friday 28th October

Free admission bafore 9pm, £4 thereafter

With DJ Adam Walton (BBC Radio)

Whilst relentlessly peddling their peculiar brand of Lyric-Driven Dirt-Swing™ (an incomparable rendering of jive-smitten cabaret blues) Louis Barabbas & TheBedlam Six have captured the imaginations of every species of listenership –both at home and overseas.

Since forming in late 2006 their music has infiltrated almost every creative niche, being adapted into animated short films, burlesque routines, musical theatre, fringe festival revues, documentary soundtracks, motion picture scores and even a comic strip. Over the years they have won praise and support from the likes of Supergrass, The Mighty Boosh, Har Mar Superstar, UB40, Mark Steel, The Hell’s Angels, BBC Radio and even the Beat Poet biographer Barry Miles – both for their furious onstage energy and Louis’ manic lyrical gymnastics. Their infamous live shows – incorporating rock, jazz, folk and theatre influences – have proved time and time again that the group is at home on any line-up, even sharing the bill with such disparate acts as Motorhead, Sun Ra’s Arkestra, I Am Kloot, Eliza Carthy, The Blockheads, Emmanuel Jal and The Buzzcocks. In the last year alone they have toured Europe, the States and Mexico, inspiring stage invasions, dancing in the aisles and a confused mixture of exhaustion and bonhomie wherever they go. They are signed to co-operative Manchester-based label Debt Records.

“Excellent in every way: an outfit and a voice that belong in smoke-filled gin joints where the booze drips off the ceiling and love is left outside.” – Chris Hawkins, BBC 6 Music

“Louis Barabbas is such a unique talent. His music is intelligent, witty and has a kick to rival any fine liqueur. Simply awesome.” – Chris Holliday, BBC Radio Manchester

“Absolutely bloody amazing!” – Danny Goffey from Supergrass, August 2008
