The Targets [+]

Friday 3rd February

Free Before 9pm, £4.00 thereafter

With DJ Adam Walton (BBC Radio)

the targets are…

loud…

angst driven…

mod punk…

they don’t want to change the world, just tell it like it is…

these grey times

After 6 years of crafting their sound and their songs, after setbacks and heartaches, crap demo’s and shit takes, the targets are ready to explode on to the international scene…

And with youth on their side, the question the world should be asking isn’t “do they want it”… but “do you want it?”… and my god you will!

Free Entry

Matt Nicholls is something of a newcomer to the world of folk music. Hailing from Wrexham, North Wales, he has been playing acoustic guitar and singing since the age of eleven and for many years has fronted the indie rock band Camera.

His live set is a mixture of traditional folk and blues songs which sit comfortably next to his original material. His influences are varied, but his latest material is reminiscent of the music of the 60’s folk revival. The list of artists he has shared the stage with and supported include: Bert Jansch, The Handsome Family, Dick Gaughan, and Nick Harper.

Matt will be hitting the road to play local folk clubs this year, so look out for him

Rook And The Ravens [+]

Saturday 11th February

Free Entry Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

With DJ Timmy Magic

Rook and The Ravens’ alternative rock bristles with dark intent amidst a Technicolor landscape populated by tough guitar pop, shiny harmonies and several stories of keyboards built on an unwavering rhythm foundation.

2009’s self-released debut album Sixteen Holes in Sixteen Souls set the scene for the new band, marrying pop hooks with a brooding melancholy. Received well by media and fans alike, lead single Alpha was played extensively on both local, national and international radio and gave the band a solid platform reinforced by relentless tour dates and festivals all over the UK and Ireland.

This autumn yields an EP, drawn from recordings made over the last two years with producer Andy MacPherson (The Who, Doves, Teenage Fanclub).

It is the work of a band that has sharpened its’ focus and found an unstoppable live chemistry – they support the release with a tour starting in October and continuing over the horizon.

“Young, bold and unfathomably talented” (High Voltage)

“Articulate, edgy, blistering and self-assured” (BBC)

“Rook and The Ravens impress with versatility reminiscent of The Byrds and Traffic” (The Independent)

Described as, “off-beat and quirky, haunting and poignant” and, “unique, dark, earthy”, Stacey is continually pushing the boundaries of her writing both lyrically and musically to produce tracks that have to be listened to again and again.

May 2011 will see the release of Stacey’s latest offering, an ep recorded in Feb 2011, during a short visit to her family in Uruguay.Brought together by Stacey’s Uncle, folk singer Juan Pendás. The songs are stripped down, embracing Stacey’s UK folk roots; whilst offering the perfect space for her authentic, unforgettable vocals.

Crackling Vinyl presents Golden Fable & Pulco [+]

Tuesday 28 February

Tickets £5 advance/ £6 door

Golden Fable are Tim McIver and Rebecca Palin.

The couple met in Manchester and were the driving force behind cult group Tim & Sam’s Tim & The Sam Band. After a heavy touring schedule, a highly acclaimed album and many radio sessions, the duo decided that it was time for a new challenge – Golden Fable was born.

Set up at their home studio in North Wales, dozens of songs were whittled down to a self-produced eleven track LP that is ready for release early in 2012.

Any illusions of a stripped back acoustic duo quickly dissipate when listening to debut single ‘The Chill Pt. 2’. Quirky beats and percussion introduce multi-layered synths, acoustic guitars and Rebecca’s choral vocal style, which bubbles up to a crescendo of electric guitars and duetting vocals. This lo-fi, folk-tinged pop that picks you up and takes you to another place.

The Chill Pt. 2 was self-released November 7th and led to a tour with The Miserable Rich, airplay on 6Music, BBC Radio Wales and XFM and culminated in a BBC Radio One Session at Maida Vale with Rob Da Bank.

Pulco

Ashley Cooke began his musical journey in the critically-acclaimed Derrero ( (3 Peel sessions, 2 Peel festive 50 spots, tours with Gorky’s, Super Furry Animals etc). Since that band’s demise at the turn of the millennium, Cooke’s has released 5 acclaimed albums as ‘Pulco’. Pulco music is home-recorded lo-fi experimentalism – observational, poignant and at times laugh out loud funny. It includes poetry, found sound, ambient noise as well as songs deftly performed with little more than voice and guitar.
