Dr Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

With DJ Adam Walton (BBC Radio)

In August 2006 Manchester’s dance culture took an unsuspected turn when Dr Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band made their performance debut at the D-Percussion festival. Substituting glow sticks for kazoos and designer labels with pinstripe suits and bowler hats the band have successfully managed to blend style with musical substance; never have the words ‘unique’ and ‘refreshing’ been so applicable.

The principal line-up of the band consists of Dr Andrew ‘blind boy’ Butler (Harmonica, banjo-ukulele, kazoo, 5 string banjo and washboard), Papa John McKay (Guitar, ukulele, mandolin, kazoo and vocals) Black Jack Barnet (Double bass, Banjo guitar ukulele and vocals). The trio refer to themselves as a ‘good-time band’ and approach their music with two aims in mind – to make people dance and smile. Clad head-to-toe in vintage finery and wielding instruments one might expect to find adorning the walls of an antique shop the band are as much of a visual feast as they are an auditory one.

The most important elements of the bands music is undoubtedly the breadth of their song writing ability. With Butler, McKay and Black Jack we have three writers who come from very different musical backgrounds yet they have managed to combine their writing and performance styles to create an energetic, witty and engaging form of music.

With Dr Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band, happy-days are here again.

The Fifth Movement with support The Mono LP’s [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4.00 Thereafter

The Fifth Movement can’t wait to get back to perform at Telfords for a night that also serves as their cellist/pianist Luke’s birthday bash!
Taking inspiration from an eclectic mix of film scores, world music and rock, The Fifth Movement have an energetic and vibrant live sound that is as original as it is exciting!
Beginning as a duo shortly after a chance meeting between singer-songwriter Kevin Critchley and composer/arranger Luke Moore, the line-up has grown to include Josie Forsey (violin/viola/backing vocals), Alex Williams (drums/percussion) and Graeme Runeckles (bass guitar).  The Fifth Movement take this even further for bigger shows, appearing on stage with an extended line-up that has previously included the likes of a full string section, flute, clarinet and choir.

This year has been the most exciting one for The Fifth Movement so far.  The band went up against over a hundred and sixty other acts and were able to fend off the competition to seal their place on the Chester Rocks stage alongside the likes of Cast and The Courteeners.  They released their EP “A Roll of The Dice” in May and their new single, Tough to be in Love, has all of the hallmarks of a James Bond theme, summing up the band’s ‘cinematic rock’ sound.

The Fifth Movement have supported James Walsh (Starsailor)Sharon CorrSandi ThomSeth LakemanIan McNabbMark Morriss (Bluetones)Mica Paris and Amsterdam.  The band have had their music used on the debut release from Cavern Records, as the soundtrack to interviews with Richard Branson and Marco Pierre White, and several songs have had frequent airplay, including on the BBC Introducing show on BBC Radio Merseyside.

A film soundtrack. With vocals. Or should that be lyrics, with a soundtrack? Whatever it is, we love it and there’s not much else like it out there. Go on, have a listen, you might like it too… here’s what some other folks thought:

“Beautiful stuff” – Dave Monks, BBC Introducing

“You can’t beat a bit of strings!” – Steve Coleman, BBC Radio Merseyside

“earworthy” – MUSIC NEWS.com

”…awash with energy and excitement” – Liverpool Live

“…musical and lyrical gems” – Tony Donaghey, Liverpool Bands page

“…their almost apocalyptic sound entrances everyone present…” – Bido Lito!

“…stole the show at Chester Rocks” – Radio City

A Kettle of Fish presents Vic Godard & The Subway Sect + Support From Me & Deboe [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

www.vicgodard.co.uk

Vic’s musical adventure which has taken him from post-punk to postman began in 1976 when he formed the Subway Sect with assorted South London soul boys, Rob Symmons (aka Simmons/Miller) on guitar, Paul Myers on bass & Ray Price on drums (replaced later in 76 by Paul Packham (aka Smith) then Mark Laff, then Bob Ward). They formed at the suggestion of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren (who wanted another band for the line-up of the 100 Club Punk Festival) after spotting Vic, Rob & Paul at a Sex Pistols gig. Despite their inexperience, Subway Sect made a successful debut at the festival. They went on tour with The Clash on their White Riot Tour in 1977, as well as becoming a regular feature on the new Punk scene. They released their debut single, Nobody’s Scared’ / ‘Don’t Split It, in March 1978 on Braik Records, a label owned by Bernie Rhodes, who managed both The Subway Sect and The Clash. Rhodes however subsequently sacked all the band except Godard and the original Subway Sect ceased to exist. The album was never released, although the classic single from the sessions “Ambition” was released on Rough Trade Records, with the B-side “Different Story (Rock and Roll Even)” also taken from the same sessions. The single was a major hit on the alternative charts. A further track “Parallel Lines” was released from these sessions as a track on the C81 cassette produced by NME magazine. The original tapes from the 1978 album were lost.

Since then Vic has kept busy with several projects realeasing albums and continuously writing songs right through till 2011, which was a busy year for Vic & The Subway Sect. Among the projects that were completed were “Live & Rare: Vol 1″ album featuring tracks spanning his entire career from unreleased tracks & versions of Subway Sect classics, including Holiday Hymn & Ambition. The coming together of a new Subway Sect line up including (original member) Paul Myers, Kevin Younger, Mark Braby & sometime Sex Pistol Paul Cook. As well as recording with Giorgio ‘The Dove’ Valentino & Barcalona’s ‘Mates Mates’ (in Catalan!).

2012 promises the release of ’1979 NOW’ a project that will finally see the infamous Subway Sect post-punk/Northern Soul infused set of 79 released as an album, as well as ‘Songs For Sale CD re-issue & those brand new collaborations. With a new Marc Riley 6Music session booked for March followed by shows in Bristol, London, Hyde, Glasgow & Edinburgh, it looks like another busy year ahead.

Me & Deboe

Blending an originality of sound with lyrics that are both poetic and evocative, this acoustic duo delivers up a performance that is wholly breath-taking and utterly
unique, redefining Rock ‘n’ Roll for the modern age.

Utility Vintage Market Presents Summer Fete

On Sunday August 19th 2012 the Utility Vintage Market team will be hosting a relaunch event for their much loved vintage clothing and lifestyle market at Telford’s Warehouse, Tower Wharf, Chester.

The extremely popular event is one of a kind here in the city of Chester and supports the likes of growing independent businesses such as Becnicks Wonder Emporium located on Brook Street who are participating in this unusual shopping experience. Vintage sellers from all over the North West will be standing at the rather aptly named ‘A Delightfully British Summer Fete’ event which playfully toys with the traditional idea of quintessential British etiquette, in keeping with the jubilee and Olympic themes of 2012.

Established artist Nikki Pinder who has previously exhibited her work in the Telford’s Warehouse contemporary art gallery will be selling exclusive customised garments and limited edition prints and will be standing amongst many other local artists, designers and craftsfolk.

The Borders Cheese Carrying Company who famously sell homemade cheeses and chutneys from their custom made narrow boat and will be parked alongside the outdoor seating area on the canalside which will be complimented by folk bands busking and bunting!

Home brewed Welsh cider ‘Rosies’ will be available on draught, alongside a range of flavoured bottled ciders. Telford’s Warehouse restaurant will be open for business, serving their delicious roast dinners made using locally sourced fresh produce.

Event organiser Holly Amelia Ashbrook has said “We are incredibly excited for the relaunch of the Utility Vintage Markets and look forward to encouraging the exploration of British style and culture in an environment very different to that of the City Centre. We hope this event will inspire Chester’s ever growing creative comunity to work together and to support eachother, their arts and their businesses.”

This event is open to the public from 12pm – 5pm. Parking is available and entry is free.

Funkdub Live Presents… Buster Shuffle [+]

Saturday 25th August

Free Entry Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Formed in London by Jet Baker as a way of keeping warm and entertaining people in return for beer, BUSTER SHUFFLE (i.e. Baker, Danny Piper, Tezza Mascali and Tim “Popeye Doyle” Connell) played the pubs and clubs across the capital until they were spotted by various industry heads eager to sign them. Deciding to go it on their own, the boys teamed up with Art Brut’s Ian Catskilkin to produce their debut album “Our Night Out”. The album garnered rave reviews, including 4 out of 5 stars from UNCUT and the accolade “one to watch”. The Daily Mirror praised the album’s “imaginative arrangements, sharp tunes and harmonies” and The Sun gave its categorical endorsement –“Take my word for it, they’re rockin’. A young Madness” – after catching the band play live. And so the boys graduated from those dingy East End boozers of their beloved London Town and – joined by James Stickley in place of Danny Piper – went on the road around the UK with The Holloways, supported the Wombats, the White Lies, Goldie Lookin’ Chain, as well as Chas ‘n’ Dave among others.

Well, word of mouth is a powerful thing, especially in today’s world of contrived, commodified, throw-away music. And so it was that BUSTER SHUFFLE’S charming videos (“Me, Myself & I”, “10 Pianos” and “Our Night Out”) attracted the attention of a discerning, overseas audience with an eye for something original, genuine and exciting amongst the wall-to-wall blandness. The word had definitely got out. With great excitement, the four-piece embarked upon their first few trips to Germany and Holland to find that the intimate atmosphere of a London pub gig works just as well in the context of a large festival crowd. Not to mention the beer! In the immediate wake of this early success, the lads signed to the German label People Like You/EMI and in the Autumn of 2010, promptly embarked upon an epic tour opening for Germany’s mega-punkska rockers, BROILERS, immediately followed by an intrepid trek across snowbound Europe and the UK with Toronto’s finest, THE CREEPSHOW (wittily documented in the live video: Buster Shuffle – Germany Tours with Broilers and The Creepshow). The band also found time that Winter to get behind the “Save the 100 Club” campaign along with many other luminaries from the music world, such as Mick Jagger, Ray Davies and Frank Black, releasing a viral and performing a one-off, sold-out show at the iconic venue in London’s Oxford Street. Following the remastered re-release of the original “Our Night Out” on People Like You in Spring 2011, BUSTER SHUFFLE returned to Europe to tour with Art Brut, open for The Wombats and play a host of club and festival dates in Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland that summer.

Since then, the band has been busy in the studio recording material for their new album “Do Nothing”, released June 4th (featuring collaborations with Mickey Gallagher from The Blockheads/The Clash, Roddy Radiation from The Specials, Ian Catskilkin from Art Brut and Wag from The Infidels). Boldly departing on occasion from their fabled piano-bashing, cockney ska roots, Baker’s new batch of quirky, darkly entertaining, yet quintessentially English songs about love, life, divorce and squeaky toys, retains BUSTER SHUFFLE’s characteristic authenticity, verve and charm.

Last summer Jet, Terry, James and Tim were reinforced by Pete Oag on Hammond/vocals, Carrie Griffiths and Debz Bridgeman on backing vocals. Following highly successful shows at London’s O2 Indigo over Christmas 2011 with Chas and Dave, the new line-up headed for Germany and the Czech Republic in January/February 2012 to play a number of sold-out shows. It seems as though the word had been spreading. Apart from amazing shows at Punk&Disorderly in Berlin in April, The London International Ska Festival in early May, a tour of Germany and Austria, the band opened for the Dropkick Murphys on the Italian leg of their European tour and also shared the headline slot with Lee Scratch Perry & The Carolingians at the fantastic THIS IS SKA! festival in Germany. With numerous festival shows and club dates across Europe and the UK still to come and “Do Nothing” currently riding high in the Ska bestseller charts in Germany, this summer promises to be BUSTER SHUFFLE’s best ever.

Keep spreading the word!
