Mechanical Owl [+]

free entry before 10pm…£4 after

mechmechanicalowl

In 2007 Mechanical Owl was the solo bedroom recording project of Mike Payne. Described amongst other things in the Leeds music press as “folktronica”, the first recordings mixed live acoustic instruments with sequenced sounds and melodic vocals into oddly structured songs. Later on in the year, and having moved back to his parents’ house in North Wales, Mike had the space to make more noise, and after buying some microphones and a drum kit off a friend he began recording indie rock songs in the room his Dad kept his penguin books collection. The songs still contained electronic elements, but Mike also adopted a more traditional song writing style, taking influence from the music he grew up listening to in the 90s and 00s. Eventually those recordings grew into the first online and physical self-release called “Snowdonia EP“.

The EP gained fans, favourable reviews and attention from radio DJs including Steve Lamacq, Adam Walton and Bethan Elfyn. A band was soon assembled and live shows were played in Northern and Southern UK cities. After a few years of playing clubs and festivals, and a failed attempt to record an album, Mike decided to implement “the backup plan” and go back to university to study a Masters in Computer Science.

After a 3 year break from Mechanical Owl and about to turn 30, Mike started to think about writing songs for the project again. This time with the goal of a creating full length album. During the time away from music, it had become very important to finish a complete musical work, and having obtained a fresh work ethic, it seemed completely possible. Recording guitars, vocals and other sounds began quickly at home, with drums played and recorded in Full of Joy Studios near Mold, with Tim McIver (Golden Fable) engineering. In the gaps between work and life, the album started to take shape. With help from Drum With Our Hands in late 2014/early 2015, the album was finally mixed, mastered and ready for release.

Now, with a new live band, Mechanical Owl has been re awakened with a fresh spirit. Work on the next album has already begun, with new material and the pick of a 7 year backlog of demos, ideas and full recordings. “Winter Songs” is a line in the sand, chronicling the last few years and signalling a new found intent to release and play heartfelt music again.

Crackling Vinyl W/Yucatan [+]

crackling-vinyl-logo-1-205x300

yucatan copy

Yucatan will be releasing an album and touring in 2015. The album was recorded in Snowdonia and very much reflects the area. Their epic performance of sweeping instrumentation, soaring choirs, and breathtaking vocals, in the band’s mother tongue of Welsh, will deliver shimmering celestial sensations in bucket loads!

Yucatan’s self-titled debut album, recorded in Snowdonia and mastered at Sigur Ros’ studio in Iceland, has received considerable praise from critics. The album has been described as “stunning music from a special place” by BBC Radio One’s Huw Stephens.

They have performed in a variety of festivals, and toured the UK to promote Enlli, their sold-out vinyl EP, released on their own label, Recordiau Coll. They have also toured in Poland and there are further plans to tour Europe to promote the new album.

Crackling Vinyl began in November 2011 as an excuse for music enthusiasts,Adam Walton, Ben ‘Soundhog’ Hayes and Elin Bach to play their favourite records in their favourite music venue far away from the madness of endless requests for the kind of R&B that wasn’t pressed on Chess Records.
Previous live guests at Crackling Vinyl have included: Gallops, Paper Aeroplanes, Katell Keineg, Alun Tan Lan, Gulp, Zervas & Pepper, Euros Childs, Cate Le Bon, Laura J. Martin, Y Niwl, Colorama, Richard James, H. Hawkline, Mowbird, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Toy Horses, T.G. Elias, Georgia Ruth, Chris T-T, Sex Hands, Irma Vep, She Makes War, Sam Airey, Houdini Dax, The Gentle Good, Trwbador, Golden Fable, The Wellgreen, Pulco, Harry Keyworth, Greta Isaac, Atlas Twins, Jessica Ball, Sophie Ballamy, Bright Young People – a fascinating selection of artists who have graced Radio 1, 6Music, Radio 2 and Radio Wales.

The Wholls (Wolz) are a Bedford-based 4-piece who play alternative rock music for venues packed with manic fans, with a sound that sits equally as comfortably on mainstream radio along with the likes of Jamie T, Royal Blood and Foals.

Their live shows make punk rock look like a picnic – performed with an enthusiasm and energy rivalled by nobody. This has already gained them strong support from their local BBC Introducing who have had them perform on festival stages over the last year, with more interviews and exposure planned.

The Wholls are releasing their fully supported debut single ‘X21’ on the 23rd October backed by a very impressive industry team. This, combined with a string of shows they have lined up, including a launch party at Camden’s Barfly on release date, ensures The Wholls will be making their presence felt on TV screens and radio stations across the UK.

OTWAY AND BARRETT – THE FINAL STRAW TOUR 2016

This may be the last Otway and Barrett tour – according to Willy. Otway remains unconvinced.

The partnership of John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett was never going to be smooth. Willy was a musical prodigy having learned to play at the age of four and mastering the guitar, piano, banjo and fiddle by the time Otway gave his first performance – drinking a bottle of ink in-one in the school playground, to an audience of 100 fellow school-children who did not believe anyone would go to such ridiculous extremes just to get attention.

It was only because they lived a hundred yards apart and that a fortune-teller (at the local Red-Cross bazaar in Aylesbury ) had told Otway that he would achieve fame and success with a blonde haired musician, that they ever worked together in the first place.

The first place Otway and Barrett did not work together was their first gig – John was heckled off stage during his solo number and both Willy and the audience decided that it would be better if they did not do the rest of the show as a duo.

They did however do some recording together, but after falling out John put out the single himself leaving Willy’s name off the label. That should have been the end of the duo, but  Pete Townshend heard the record and offered to produce the act – an offer neither party felt they could refuse.

With the hatchet temporarily buried  John and Willy produced their first album. After appearance on the TV show  The Old Grey Whistle Test – during which John landed on his testicles whilst leaping astride Willy’s amplifier  – an amused punk audience bought enough copies of the single “Really Free” to give them their first Hit.

Things did not go smoothly following this success. Otway unwisely chose to follow up the Otway/Barrett punk hit with a solo Otway orchestral ballad he had written for a girl he fancied – it was a flop so, to the annoyance of their record company (who had paid them a massive advance) John and Willy split up again, the day their second Album “Deep and Meaningless” was released.

When times got tough they did re-unite for short periods of time, but any sustained partnership was usually curtailed by unreasonable behaviour by one of the parties. Barrett writing a song called “Give It Headbutts” which required him to bang John’s head against the microphone in time to the music and Otway recording a solo album called “All Balls and no Willy” are typical examples of this.

In the past few years Otway and Barrett have reunited for a few short tours, if only to prove that nothing much has changed.

In 2013 Otway intensively toured the country screening his rockumentary film ( premiered at The Odeon, Leicester Square and shown at Cannes) in which Willy is prominently featured. However, at the time of writing Willy has refused to watch the film. Some things never change.

‘Both John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett remain enigmas to the vast majority of the British public, but for those who know they are amongst the top ten of favourite artists to see live. The show is a wonderful eclectic mix of bizarre humour, superb visual effects, fine guitar playing and the best use of a Theremin anywhere. ‘

Hunter & The Bear [+]

Free before 9pm, £4 thereafter

Hunter2

Every fledgling band needs their own rehearsal space – the school music room or the drummer’s bedroom  – but Hunter And The Bear ended up in a soundproofed shipping container in a London car park, a nice touch for a band that are certainly going places. Starting out as a duo, long-time friends Jimmy Hunter (lead guitar/mandolin) and Will Irvine (guitar/lead vocals and nicknamed “The Bear” at school, so work out the origins of their unusual band name yourselves) ended up at the same university in Newcastle writing songs together before heading south to London in 2012 in pursuit of gigs.

Their hard work and enthusiastic approaching to playing live, anywhere and anytime, led to the addition of drummer Gareth Thompson, who they spotted playing at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and the rhythm section was completed in 2014 with the addition of bassist Chris Clark, a timely move as they were given the opportunity to support Eric Clapton on his UK arena tour that same summer as well as performing at Scotland’s T In The Park and Belladrum Tartan Heart festivals.

The band’s influences are rich and varied, which is reflected in their music. Irvine and Hunter’s Scottish upbringings lent exposure to traditional music but a love of classic rock bands like LynyrdSkynrydand The Band shines through in both song-writing and performance – a powerful blend of folk, rock and country, with strong vocal harmonies and soaring guitar lines. Debut EP “Dusty Road” (featuring favourites “Forest On The Hill” and “Taliesin”) earned high praise and the follow-up EP “Before I Came Home” was preceded by single “Pick Me Up.”

In August this year, the band played Reading Festival and new EP entitled “Wildfire” was released in the summer, containing standout tracks “Burn It Up” and “Since September.”

Through their mutual disillusionment with just about everything, except music and all things five stringed and banjo shaped, Dave Steele and Pat Ranscombe set about changing the universe.(This is often referred to as a midlife crisis).
And so, in January 2016 Texas Banjo Massacre was born. The aforementioned musical troubadours teamed up with a posse of wandering souls and began choogling.
Based in the North West’s cultural Mecca aka Chester they are

Pat Ranscombe Guitars, vocals, banjos
Dave Steele Guitars, vocals, banjos
Pete Atwood Bass

Already they are creating a rumble with a clutch of shows in and around Chester and a radio session to boot. Currently writing and recording material for a forthcoming project which is yet to be announced, 2016 is shaping up to be an exciting prospect for these guys.
