Shellsuit [+]

SHELLSUIT BIOGRAPHY

Shellsuit began  in the Granite  City  at  around  4:32am, when Lee  Scanlan drove  into  the Royal  Mail  Depot with the sound  of James Carr escaping from his car  window. A mutual  interest  in the soul singer brought him to  the attention of Ed Doherty  another  North West  of England  escapee  who  had  gone to Aberdeen , like Lee, to  find work on the Oil  Rigs  but ended  up working  for the Queens Mail

Back in  their  respective  homes  of Cheshire(Lee) and Liverpool ( Ed)  they  began to  collaborate on the tracks that were  to  form  the Lo-Fi  gem ‘Walton Prison  Blues’, released on Welsh Independant label Higuera Records  in 2009.

The LP  contained the outstanding  track –‘Postman’- which had brought  them to the attention  of Tom Robinson at  Radio 6  and ensured  a studio session  at BBC Broadcasting  House in 2008. Tom  called the song ‘my favourite new song’ of that  year.

He remains  a strong supporter

The  follow  up LP-Wednesday  Morning  Bootle Strand- was approached  differently. Using the proceeds  of the first LP, plus  gig  income  and Child  Tax Credit, the two  men  recorded the LP over a 4 year  period at  numerous  Studios around Liverpool (Parr St, The  Motor Museum, Elevator) to  create  a more muscular  pop  sound, framed by  Lee’s trademark  guitar licks  and Ed’s  observations of everyday  life  as  impacted upon  by class, finance, and  drugs.

The LP’s release in November  2014 saw  ecstatic local media  reviews and a distribution  deal  that  ensured  that  people  in Cornwall  and Carlisle were  suddenly getting it

Recent  TV appearances  on Bay TV  Liverpool  and Liverpool Live TV  were  cemented by a headline slot at  New Brighton’s  ‘Astral  Coast’ Festival.

Parochial  as the title of the LP  is, you  could substitute ‘ Exeter shopping  Precinct ‘ and  the impact  on the listener  would be the same- songs  that are beautifully  arranged, melodically  smart  and  say  something  to  you  about  your life.

Shellsuit  are not going  to  expect you  to  listen to  ten songs  about rejection from  a partner, they  know the world is alot more complicated  and enjoyable than that.

The band  have returned to  the studio  to work  with  producer Steve Powell, the hands  behind ‘Michael Head  and the Magical  World of the Strands’.

They  will continue to  perform the new LP  at  gigs  across  the UK.

People  still  want a soulful  voice  that  articulates life in the grip of big egos with small  compassion.

Shellsuit are that voice.

The Hexmen [+]

Free Before 9pm… £4 After

13608045_10209654184534085_413838396_n

The band was founded by frontman vocalist and harmonica player George Hexman in the late 70s, joining forces with major movers and shakers of the Liverpool music scene. Throughout the 80s and 90s, The Hexmen line-up was a shifting collaboration of local luminaries including members of The Las, Edgar Jones (The Stairs, Oasis, Paul Weller), the Boo Radleys, Elvis Costello (Alan Mayes/Rusty), Electrofixion (Echo and the Bunnymen), Cast and Dr Phibes among others, side projects included Los Rackerteeros ( Charlie Whitney from supergroup Family) and Film soundtracks .

Although they have always been known as a blues band, the Hexmen’s material is not that easy to categorise. The band’s music is blues based certainly but the defining quality of the Hexmen has always been energy with an aggressive, indie edge and a psychedelic undercurrent that lends extra dimensions to the music. Notwithstanding George’s historic links with the 80s and 90s Liverpool music scene, the current band members have an exciting pedigree. George himself, vocals (and a much sought after session blues harp player), has recorded with with some of the most significant indie bands of the past 20 years.

On guitar is Ian Fuller, one of the UK’s foremost blues indie rock guitarists and he has shared the stage with some of the greats. Ian started his musical career around London and was soon gigging at well known Venues such as The 100 club, The Half Moon Putney, Dingwalls etc. His influences include: Gary Moore, Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Cream.etc
Bass player Mike Cain and  Mat Shaw on drums. Mike & Mat have gigged together for over 25 yrs before joining The Hexmen, their former bands include AgentX, PTP, Fallen Empire, Razor & The Cactus Elves amongst others.

Cat Scratch Fever [+]

Free admission before 9pm, £4 thereafter

cat scratch
Being a peculiar Liverpool cult band in the mid 1990s…..Featuring Paul Kappa as Dr. Hank B. Death….. a frock coated ,Colt Navy totin’ guitar player, ripping Country and Eastern apart, with his faithful pals Tox and Two-Gun Tennessee Slim

Cat Scratch Fever. A disease that you can catch. A cursory search of the web shows that Cat Scratch Fever is quite nasty, and that’s even before making reference to Ted Nugent.

Two ex members of Liverpool group ‘The Lawnmower’ Tony Doyle (The Accelerators, Simply Red, Bo Jelly) and D.A. Dolman ( The Moondogs, The Beach Bastards) asked Paul Kappa (The Blimey Brothers, The Cathedral, Candy Store Rock, Up and Running) in the late summer of 1992 if he would join with them in a musical appreciation of all things Sun Session. It was for a couple of gigs, and just for a kick. They played The Casablanca Club on Hope St. Liverpool and the reaction was so good they did it again and again and again, until in 1998, after more than 1800 gigs, Paul quit the band.

In those six years, they appeared at Glastonbury (1997) and Cropredy (1998), incidentally Paul’s last ever gig with the band. They appeared on MTV (big deal!) ITV, and Channel One cable!!! They were regulars with Mark Lamaar on his afternoon show on GLR, brodcast from Baker St. in London.

This line up of Cat Scratch Fever broke up in 1998, after what would be most pleasantly described as ‘personal differences’, or, put plainly that Dolman and Kappa didn’t like each other very much! Oh, the politics of making music. The two albums and off-shoot singles and EPs recorded were ‘Death Western’ and ‘The Big Bang!’

The first album ‘Death Western’ was begun in April 1994, and was recorded in Rick Rock’s ‘Wand Studios’ in a basement underneath a decrepit fish and chip shop, last decorated on VE day, and with fish stocks from the same era. Often the boys would eat their suppers there, warmed by undertable heating; surely one of the Seven Wonders of East Acton. Dolman and Doyle both contracted food poisoning and were forced to play the regular Wednesday gig in Guinans on Slater Street, Liverpool sitting down, and running to the toilet often.

Pepperjam [+]

Free before 9pm, £4 thereafter

Pepperjam

From the post-industrial valleys that lie between Manchester and Leeds emerged a 3-piece outfit called “Pepperjam” to perform their first gig in early 2005. Their first incarnations mixed the songs of ex-Little Chief frontman, Lorry Dowling with fretless bassist/cellist Nigel and percussion from Hebden Bridge’s Paul Dear. Over the last two years they have developed and grown into a 5-piece band with the addition of drums, extra vocals and keys.

The combined past histories of the members include Black, The Ukrainians, Little Chief and Tetchi to name a few. Music encompassing a wide range of styles and influence which when added to Nige’s classical and eclectic tastes leave a vibrant musical palette.

King Lagoons Flying Swordfish Dance Band [+]

swordfish
King Lagoon 2

The Flying Swordfish are the royal band of a tropical island king, known as ‘Lagoon’ who inhabits a parallel dimension. The realm of King Lagoon hosts many diverse and exotic lands and small islands where the royal flotilla races and cruises to the sounds of the King’s favourite bands. This dimension is similar to ours but many things can work quite differently and unexpectedly.

A messenger from King Lagoon made contact with Rodrigo in 2010 to ask him to create a band…. Whether it was to simply open up interaction or for a more dramatic reason, the exact motive remains unknown.

The messenger is a small golden bird with 5 wings, iridescent plumage and large expressive eyes of a sort of extra-human depth. Appearing at a window, having to be released from the inside of a drum or coming out of a tap, a computer screen or a saxophone, the bird appears to Rodrigo – alone or at band rehearsals – to drop off little parcels of exotic flavoured treats. Rodrigo and the other Flying Swordfish eat these tasty delights, and as they taste the other-dimensional flavours, more becomes know to them about the realm of King Lagoon, as well as inspiring music and ideas for the performance. The full picture of this other realm is not know but here is some of what the golden bird has shared…

Sound is something that has a much greater effect on the surroundings and can have a strong effect on other senses, for example it can produce aromas! When music is played it can be as much an olfactory extravaganza as one of sound. In this dimension, the Smell Technician in The Flying Swordfish creates an equivalent experience.

When The Flying Swordfish play it is reflected and heard in King Lagoon’s realm. The way music sounds in the two dimensions has crossover points but is quite different so it will be an unusual and fascinating experience in this other dimension. The unusual musical forms of their other-dimensional counterparts influence some of the music of The Flying Swordfish. For example this can be heard in the 5/4 time signature song ‘One Leg‘.

…As the sky turns to a spectrum of many different glowing colours with the slow setting of the sun, the royal flotilla leaves the shimmering lagoons, dense, thriving jungles, golden beaches and rolling lemon-grass hills to fly up into the multi-coloured sky and into outer space to tune their instruments, capture reverbs in their effects pedals and ride comets round the universe.

1442433032_1739_design

The outstanding power rock trio Miracle Glass Company feat. William Douglas (WD and the Wheel), Austen George (The Setup, The Alvas) and Andy Duncan (Miyagi, The Black Diamond Express), are a heavy psychedelic groove machine.

The formation is one we’re all familiar with – drums at the back, bass and guitar up front – but it is Miracle Glass Company’s tight vocal harmonies and ingenious song structures that make them an electric outfit worth putting everything else on hold for.

From supernaturally beautiful songs to seismic mind bending jams, Miracle Glass Company represent all that’s best about cosmic rock n’ roll.

It’s a question you’re going to be asked eventually: ‘have you heard Miracle Glass Company yet?’
