Natacha Atlas

Tickets £12.50

Musically and geographically, Natacha Atlas has always been an itinerant. The Anglo-Egyptian singer has spent more than a decade fusing electronic beats with North African and Arabic music, finding links between seemingly disparate musical genres, exploring new and different sonic settings and working with a wealth of like-minded collaborators from across the world along the way. The resulting body of work is both a triumph of true multiculturalism and a testament to the richness and accessibility of Arabic culture. It is, indeed, an oeuvre unlike any other.

Jack Roberts Band [+]

Free admission before 10pm, £4 thereafter

Who Is Jack Roberts?

That’s a question we’ve been asking ourselves for a while now! Hidden behind his stage persona, his animated characters and a tumultuous voice you will find something very real: Jack Roberts!

Jack Roberts writes songs, performs them, records them; he’s an animator, an artist, and a general genius! He’s performed at Glastonbury and is well known in Liverpool for his time in the band ‘The Bingo Brothers.’

Jack Roberts also performed at the Liverpool Echo Arena for The Number One Project, sharing the stage with the likes of Atomic Kitten and Gerry & The Pacemakers. His performance of shaving with a cut throat razor whilst singing ‘Ticket To Ride’ has gained him huge notoriety and has attracted a lot of press interest.

Now known for his avant-garde performances with everything from a bicycle pump to a biscuit tin, his jail bird stripy tops, and even a broken computer keyboard, his trademark gruff yet huge vocal range has seen him wow audiences at Sound City and Liverpool Music Week.

Achievements include an album through Sony, and his infamous ‘Heart Attack’ song on a Ricky Hatton video. (Search for this on Youtube or check his Myspace). He’s a massive favourite in Liverpool and has a strong cult following.

Noted for his stage persona and the contradiction of wit and pain in his lyrics, Jack Roberts is a true story teller you don’t want to miss.

“Superb” – THE TIMES

Aynsley has never been an artist to reheat the music of yesteryear. Influenced from an early age by the 60’s RnB era, Lister takes these key elements and mixes them with a more current and melodic lyrical approach.

He is one of very few artists playing rocking blues with a modern edge -tangible, heartfelt, soul searching and full of fine songwriting; played with passion and vitality. His hard hitting rhythms and guitar work are reminiscent of a young Clapton.

Since signing to Ruf Records, Lister has recorded four solo studio albums, and two live albums – one solo acoustic and one along with a live DVD for Germanys ROCKPALAST TV show. He has sold over 75,000 records and now headlines many of the major festivals throughout Europe where he has played alongside blues legends such as Buddy Guy, John Mayall, and Robert Cray aswell as big name pop artists such as Bryan Adams and Fun Lovin’ Criminals. His recorded work has seen him working with Producers Jim Gaines (Santana, SRV) and Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia)

In more recent times 2006 saw Lister recording in Clarksdale, Mississippi and Memphis Tennessee where he worked again with Jim Gaines on the Ruf Records collaboration ‘Pilgrimage’. With Gaines producing Lister debut for the label in 1999, it was almost 7 years to the month that they had previously worked together. In September of that year his album ‘Everything I Need’ was released stateside in preparation for this years debut tour.

UPSIDE DOWN is Lister’s fourth studio album and his first to contain all originals. Every aspect and quality that his fans have now come to expect is there, from the raunchy guitar, the melodic voice to the infectious songs but to simply pronounce this release another worthwhile effort would be an injustice indeed: The result is his strongest, boldest and most compelling album to date that could quite easily crossover into the mainstream

“His best album ever” – GET READY TO ROCK

“Deft lyrical touch and musical feel” – ZEITGEIST

“Upside Down’ is a great album” – GUITARIST MAGAZINE

“Bursting with killer riffs and songs” – CLASSIC ROCK

In reality his career is just getting started – he has the ability to reach such a wide-ranging audience from teenagers to folks who grew up in a time when real artists mattered. Right now Aynsley Lister has everything he needs to turn the world upside down…

Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog & Georgia Ruth [+]

Tuesday November 22nd

£4 Entry (Free NUS)

It’s going to be a lovely, intimate affair with folkish vinyl crackling in the background, lots of candles, many friendly faces. If there is an appetite for early week, beautiful sounds in Chester, then we’ll definitely do more of these. But an appreciative audience is key… which is where you excellent folk come in.

Please make a note of the date in your diary. It’s going to be a real antidote to the winter chill and the world’s troubles and I’d love you to be able to come along.

It’s a mere £4 to get in (free with NUS card) – but don’t let that intimate that these are anything other than the highest quality artists. Both Georgia and Cowbois have graced the prominent stages at Green Man and Glastonbury, and earned airplay at the very highest level. I’m very much looking forward to seeing you there.

GEORGIA RUTH

http://www.twitter.com/georgiaruth

Growing up in west Wales, Georgia Ruth Williams became accustomed to sea mists, strange sounds and the melancholy beauty of the Anne Briggs, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell songs found in her mother’s record collection.

Quickly gathering support for her hybrid of folk and blues, she appeared both at Glastonbury and SWN Fesival (curated by Huw Stephens) and recorded a session at Maida Vale which was played by Bethan Elfyn on her Radio 1 in Wales show. In 2010 she appeared at Greenman (and was interviewed by comedian Josie Long for Radio 1) and at HMV’s Next Big Thing series (opening for Sweet Billy Pilgrim, after lead singer Tim Elsenburg declared himself a fan). She opened for Seth Lakeman at some of his UK Summer dates last year, and supported Damien Jurado at his September show in Cardiff’s The Globe. She played at the Union Chapel in July 2011 for Arctic Circle’s Daylight Music show.

Now aged 23, with a harp, an assortment of reed organs and an unfailingly haunting voice, Georgia presents a new collection of songs which recall those early inherited sounds to startling effect. Recorded by David Wrench (Everything Everything, James Yorkston, Bat for Lashes) in the stillness of Snowdonia’s Bryn Derwen studios in January 2011, these four original songs feature Georgia on vocals, harp, piano, rhodes and organs; Pete Richardson (of Y Niwl) on drums; Pete Walton on double bass and fiddle; and David Wrench on vibraphones.

Georgia’s version of old Appalachian song, ‘Old Blue’, was recently featured as MPFree of the Day on the Lauren Laverne 6 Music Morning Show.

Georgia presents a regular late-night music show on BBC Radio Cymru.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

“Georgia is one of the most prodigious talents to grace my airwaves: beautifully arranged, transcendent songs that beat with a raw, yearning heart.” Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales

“Beautiful love-lorn tunes” Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1

“The first time we heard ‘Ocean’ we had to stop what we were doing, sit down and listen over and over; we were utterly spellbound. [Her] beguiling music hook-grabbed us immediately. And it’s not only Ocean that is completely intoxicating – [..] the magical Anna has a gorgeous soothing and melancholy quality – we could imagine it being used as the backdrop to the sad lonely moment in a movie.” Breaking New Waves blog

“I saw her perform with Lucy Rose where she was pretty magnificent, highlighting a stunning live performance with her exceptional voice..” Just Music That I Like blog

COWBOIS RHOS BOTWNNOG

Imagine if the Beach Boys if they weren’t from California or maybe if Phoenix weren’t the cool French kids from Versailles. There’s something comforting in the knowledge that Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog hail from a tiny village amid the rolling countryside of the Llyn peninsula, Wales. Rhos Botwnnog commons in north-west Wales to be exact.

‘…countrified Celticism, and done very nicely indeed’ – Sound on Sound

Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog play a mixture of country, folk and rock influenced by their parents’ Neil Young and Gram Parsons records and the old Welsh folk songs they grew up with. The band re-entered the studio in September 2010 with engineer/producer David Wrench for the recording of their second album Dyddiau Du, Dyddiau Gwyn. The recruitment of friends and local musicians Euron Jones, Branwen Williams and Llyr Pari helped to flesh out the band’s sound and allowed them to record most of the album in live takes rather than relying on overdubs. The resulting album is released via the Sbrigyn Ymborth label.

They are young – at least they look young – which can’t be a bad thing when they produce a sound so independent and divorced from music lazily being made by a lot of other new groups. Lead singer Iwan, beneath a head of thick curls, resembles a Welsh Dylan, and his almost-there voice carries the songs in spite of its delicacy.

‘Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog are true superstars of the future’ – Glasswerk

Brothers Aled (25), Dafydd (22) and Iwan (21) formed the band in 2005 when Aled and Dafydd, the rhythm section from welsh heavy-rock band Eryr, decided to flesh out the songs that Iwan had been writing and recording in his bedroom on an old 4-track cassette recorder. Quickly gaining a local following through live shows, television appearances and radio plays they released their debut album Dawns y Trychfilod in 2007 on the Sbrigyn Ymborth label. An eclectic collection of songs, ranging from lo-fi country, punk, minimal French pop and rock & roll, the album stayed at the number 1 slot of the Welsh music charts for numerous weeks. Following this release the band set out on a headlining tour across Wales and began playing welsh festivals such as the Eisteddfod’s Maes-B and Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau.

2008 saw the band released the Paid â Deud single with Welsh singer-songwriter Gwyneth Glyn, a reworking of an old Welsh folk song recorded in the local tavern, and featuring local pedal-steel guitar player Euron Jones. The band continued to play live shows and work on material for a new LP. In 2009 Llyr Pari of Jen Jeniro joined as an additional guitarist to help with new material and the same year saw them playing on the main stage at the Wakestock festival.

Chemistry Lane 2nd EP Launch ‘Pitch Black’ [+]

Plus Support From

Esper Scout & Silver Back Club

Thursday 22nd November –

Free Admission

Influences range far and wide from shoe-gaze and orchestral post-rock bands like Slowdive, Spiritualized and Godspeed! You Black Emperor, to new wave groups such as Talking Heads and Echo and the Bunnymen.  Recent appreciation for bands such as Deerhunter, Factory Floor and The Phantom Band have allowed the group to unlock a new direction.

Chemistry Lane combine the dreaminess of experimental indie with a layered instrumental depth of sound that results in powerful, almost hypnotic melodies and warm spine tingling atmospheres.

A review of Chemistry Lane’s debut EP Launch (Christopher Bunting).

“The group appear as a collection of shadows onstage behind an enormous projection screen – set up to display various film and imagery – separating band from audience.  It’s a brave move, not one that many artists would even consider, and it serves to amp up the pre-gig anticipation amongst the crowd.  Credit to the band for a willingness to experiment in a live setting but it’s this spirit that pervades their music also.”

“Set closer ‘Pitch Black’ ensures the night ends on a high.  With its hypnotic synth-bass line holding everything together, coiling snake-like around the room, looping over and over until things fall apart, it’s a hulking beast of a track and a definite highlight.”

Esper Scout

Esper Scout are an alt. rock/progressive four-piece from Leeds, driven by an enthusiasm for melody, harmony, rhythms and guitar and bass textures and pedal effects as well as dynamic drums and rhythms.

“…The influence of bands like the Mars Volta is clear in their music but the vocal delivery makes them closer to Manchester favourites Oceansize. Comparisons to Warpaint also seem valid as the set goes all shoegazey at times with good dual vocals and clever breakdowns…”

Leeds Music Scene live review by Rebecca Atkinson

Silver Back Club

“Deliciously atmospheric” – Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales

“Music so lovely I just happily paid 3 quid for it” – Dan Salter, Echoes And Dust

“Musicianship in droves” – Kane Fulton, Skrbblr Magazine

“Some of the most exciting music I’ve heard in an age” – Dan Read, The Core Management

Hailing from industrial Deeside in North Wales, SILVER/BACK/CLUB formed towards the end of 2011. The four fellows (David Thomas – Guitar & Lead Vocals, Adam Hughes – Bass, Tom Williams – Drums, and Gareth Jones – Synths & Vocals) have written for and gigged with various local bands for a number of years, gaining experience and honing their craft.

Moving into 2012, it became apparent that this incarnation had something special. April saw the release of a debut self-titled EP, with all three tracks receiving airplay on BBC Radio Wales. In a short space of time, the band is building up a healthy reputation with critics, promoters and gig-goers alike.

Drawing upon many influences, S/B/C have been compared to indie heavyweights such as Editors, The Horrors, Bombay Bicycle Club and fellow Welshies Los Campesinos! Combining shimmering delays, haunting vocals, stabbing staccato guitar and distorted grooves, S/B/C strive for one thing, and that is to write good pop songs: distinguished tunes, teaming with hooks and melody.

After only their second gig, S/B/C were scouted by Victoria Warehouse (the new home of the Manchester Warehouse Project) to have their track “Pale Face” chosen as  the opener for a forthcoming compilation CD, aiming to promote upcoming unsigned artists – an accolade which the band are very excited about.

A physical release of their EP is now imminent, alongside a full UK tour.

Crackling Vinyl presents Sex Hands + Irma Vep [+]

Tuesday 19th March – Tickets £6.00 Advance

SEX HANDS

Split 12” single on Song, By Toad out now:

http://songbytoadrecords.com/paws/song-by- toad-split-12

‘Way No Way’: http://youtube.com/watch?v=FQ4ntdd7AEU

Sex Hands are three childhood best friends from North Wales, and one new pal from Manchester via Runcorn, making music inspired by the hit TV series Friends. Taking in members of NW notables Klaus Kinski, Irma Vep and Waiters, they enigmatically straddle the line between uniquely irresistible melodic delights, and unhinged macho-man party anthems. Your curiosity may already have been piqued by their recent, excellent (and free to download) collection ‘Series 1’. This though is proudly their first appearance on vinyl, and sees them flex their muscle through pulse-rasing standouts; ‘Way, No Way’, and ‘Ichiban’.

(from the IceCapades website)

“Shouted, brilliant lo-fi.”

THE LINE OF BEST FIT

IRMA VEP

Limited edition vinyl LP ‘HAHA’ available now on Turquoise Coal. Promo video, of sorts: http://youtube.com/watch?v=UZRuNmPx_3Q

Irma Vep is the solo incarnation of Klaus Kinski drummer Edwin Stevens. Turquoise Coal’s debut release, HAHA is in fact the tenth full length Irma Vep album, although the `irst to appear on vinyl. We think it is the best thing we have heard in ages.

In the great tradition of drummers’ solo albums, HAHA is more ‘Oar’ than ‘No Jacket Required’, more Nixon & Jarvis than Ringo Starr, and bears little relation to Klaus Kinski’s fearsome “broken glass dipped in napalm and rammed up your nostrils” sound.

The LP is a stark, stripped down and intimate affair, achingly personal and uncompromising. Edwin plays everything himself… through amps… onto tape. The record was recorded in two days last November and the resolutely lo-`i result radiates an unpolished warmth seeped in melancholy, guilt, humour, sex, disgust and other stuff.

HAHA is no single-gear ride though – tracks like ‘What’s That in Your Mouth‘ and ‘All People Are Poison‘ see Edwin rocking out with abandon, perfectly complementing the affecting poignancy of songs like ‘There’s Nothing Wrong with Feeling Wrong‘ and ‘Be a Mother‘. Edwin reckons that HAHA is the most normal thing he’s ever done – happily on this occasion, ‘normal’ has no connection with ‘mundane’ and it turns out to also be one of the very best things he’s ever done.

You won’t hear a more human record this year. HAHA’s understated magic stands alongside the likes of the Velvet Underground’s 3rd album, Skip Spence’s “Oar”, Big Star’s 3rd, Neil Young’s “On the Beach”, Leonard Cohen’s “Songs of Love and Hate” or early Palace Brothers… without sounding at all like any of them.

The record comes as a numbered edition of 200 copies in screenprinted sleeve by Dylan Hughes with exclusive art print insert by Alexandra Humphreys together with a CD of the album so you can also groove while on the move.

CRACKLING VINYL

http://facebook.com/cracklingvinyl

http://tumblr.com/cracklingvinyl

http://twitter.com/cracklingvinyl

Crackling Vinyl began in November 2011 as an excuse for music enthusiasts, Adam Walton, Ben ‘Soundhog’ Hayes and Elin Bach to play their favourite records in their favourite music venue (Telford’s Warehouse, Chester) far away from the weekend madness of endless requests for the kind of R&B that wasn’t pressed on Chess Records.

Crackling Vinyl evolved to encompass live music. They would bring unique and acclaimed artists to Chester for the first time, at a very affordable price: a high quality watermark in a city keen to experience the best, upcoming touring artists.

Previous live guests at Crackling Vinyl have included: Gallops, Paper Aeroplanes, Katell Keineg, Alun Tan Lan, Gulp, Zervas & Pepper, Euros Childs, Cate Le Bon, Laura J. Martin, Y Niwl, Colorama, Richard James, H. Hawkline, Mowbird, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Toy Horses, T.G. Elias, Georgia Ruth, Chris T-T, Sex Hands, Irma Vep, She Makes War, Sam Airey, Houdini Dax, The Gentle Good, Trwbador, Golden Fable, The Wellgreen, Pulco, Harry Keyworth, Greta Isaac, Atlas Twins, Jessica Ball, Sophie Ballamy, Bright Young People – a fascinating selection of artists who have graced Radio 1, 6Music, Radio 2 and Radio Wales.

Crackling Vinyl DJ’d for the whole weekend at this year’s Green Man Festival (the Walled Garden stage). We also hosted an acclaimed day of live music – and night of excellent records (including guest DJ’s Martin Carr [Boo Radleys] & Liz Hunt [The School]) – at this year’s S?n festival in Cardiff and were invited to DJ The Joy Formidable’s first North Wales show in over two years.

It has been an eventful first 12 months for Crackling Vinyl.

Crackling Vinyl’s next event is on Tuesday 19th March at Telford’s Warehouse, Chester and features Sex Hands and Irma Vep.

Crackling Vinyl also DJ stone classics from the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s: psych / soul / pop / garage / r ‘n’ b every other Friday night at Telford’s Warehouse in Chester, with live music that encompasses some of the more serrated bands that we love. Please see the website for full details.

Adam Walton* is BBC Radio Wales’ longstanding new music presenter with a particular love for lysergic soul, off kilter Welsh pop and 60’s oddities. Adam’s late night, weekend radio show is a haven for strange and original Welsh sounds.

Ben ‘Soundhog’ Hayes is one of the most respected record collectors, music enthusiasts, DJ’s and ‘bootleggers’ in the UK. At the vanguard of the new millennium’s fascination with ‘bastard pop’ Ben earned support and respect all over Europe, from the likes of XFM, MTV & BBC Radio 1. A recent return to bootlegs (Whole Lotta Helter Skelter – brilliantly grafting The Beatles to Led Zeppelin) has earned tens of thousands of views on YouTube and airplay on 6Music and Radio Wales. His DJ sets extol a kaleidoscopic love of music, particularly Moog synthesisers and compressed acoustic guitars.

Elin Bach is an artist, a librarian and record lover from Mold, Flintshire. Her philosophy is brilliant and simple: all 7”s, “nothing after 1972”. Expect to hear anything from Georgie Fame to something inspirational and half-?forgotten in the Welsh mother tongue. If you are very good, she will do a little dance behind the DJ booth. It’s a manifestation of the joy she has for the records she plays.

“pretty cool… loads of interesting sounding musicians”

Cerys Matthews, 6Music

“a set of evenings dedicated to genuinely brilliant  music.”

Ian Hughes, Daily Post

Open Mic With special guest host Rob Vincent [+]

Free Entry

Chester’s longest running open mic is hosted by Rob Vincent, who’s making a special trip across the Mersy to be joined by all on the Telford’s stage. Live music starts at 9pm.

If there’s a lot of half-finished, semi-fulfilled, vaguely unsatisfying music around these days – songs that say nothing to you about your life – then maybe it’s because the people who make it haven’t lived much of a life themselves.

Not so in the case of Robert Vincent, the searingly honest Liverpool singer-songwriter whose mix of folk, rock and country is like a Mersey Van Morrison or a Scouse Springsteen.

Born into a house that rang to the sounds of Johnny Cash, The Beatles and Pink Floyd, Robert knew before he was five years old that he wanted to be a musician. When he became a father at 17 he had to balance the hard graft of life in a working band with the responsibility of providing for a family. He’s seen setbacks and false dawns, he’s come near to success only to have it snatched away, but he’s never lost his faith in his music. And now that faith is coming good.

“I’ve done the whole thing of trying to be what people want me to be,” Rob explains in his warm and good-humoured Scouse drawl, “And in the end I just thought I’ve had enough of this. The songs I’ve written now, some of them sound like Johnny Cash and some of them like 50s rock’n’roll – but they’re what *I* wanted to write. And the funny thing is, the more honest I am the better people like it.”

The result is Rob’s debut album ‘Life In Easy Steps’: a set of songs that are alternately as open and empathic as ‘Second Chance’, and as raw and righteous as ‘Riots Cry’ – all held together by a singular lyrical vision and a voice that can soothe, comfort or tear down a wall. In a sea of plastic pop, this is real rock and roll.

“There’s no smoke and mirrors about it,” Rob says with a smile. “It’s like a good old fashioned country record. Sing what you mean – and sing it like you mean it.”

It all goes back to that house in Crosby, north Liverpool where, alongside country and The Beatles, his older brothers initiated him into the mysteries of Pink Floyd. ‘Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ taught young Rob that a song could be cosmic and mystical – but it had to be a proper song too. He became fascinated with lyrics. “It wasn’t just what Roger Waters wrote but why he wrote it,” he says. “That really interested me as a kid. And then I started meddling with the guitar…”

Rob left school at 16 to dabble in local bands, growing mildly frustrated that his mates only wanted to play standards and not write their own songs. A job as a roadie for a covers band earned him a few quid and a chance to get up and sing a couple of numbers – ‘All Right Now’ and the inevitable ‘Wish You Were Here’. “You’ll give anything to get up and have a go at that age,” Rob recalls.

Then his girlfriend became pregnant. “It was a massive, massive thing to happen when you’re so young,” he admits.

For a while music had to take second fiddle to providing for the baby. He worked in catering jobs and even as an Estate Agent – but there was always a band too.

One of them, a group called Boa, won Rob the chance to represent Liverpool at a festival marking 50 Years of Rock’n’Roll in Memphis in 2004 and to record at Sun Studios, Sam Phillips’s fabled Birthplace of Rock’n’Roll. But just as Boa seemed about to happen the band fell apart. “After that,” Rob says, “I thought, I’m doing my own thing from now on.”

By 2007 he promised himself he’d never be left high and dry again. His band ‘Night Parade’ recorded a debut album but management wrangles kept it from being released. More setbacks, more refusal to give in. But Rob was now in the rhythm of writing his own songs and more convinced than ever that he knew what he was doing – and why he was doing it. He’d also started working with one Pete Smith, Grammy award winning co-producer of Sting’s ‘Dream Of The Blue Turtles’. Together they recorded ’Life In Easy Steps in Brighton.

The years of hard work put grit and insight in these songs by an artist who’s still barely in his thirties. When you’ve worked in a band for four or five years and the rug gets pulled, it can feel like you’re left with nothing, he thinks. But that’s not really the case. You’ve got all that experience, that practice. It toughens you up and focuses you. You find you can write about people as they are – the good and the bad.

So Rob Vincent’s songs are compassionate and perceptive. There’s a wild evocation of the fact that every life is lived in the eye of a storm on the blues-blazing ‘Riots Cry’, and forgiveness for former friends who’ve let you down in ‘How Do You Sleep’. There’s an elegy for the wasted opportunities of a dead relationship, where your partner can’t change, in the plangent, Lennonesque ‘Second Chance’.

And he’s not frightened of getting a little cosmic either. The intimate, gently strummed ‘Stars’ takes that familiar spine-chilling moment when you look up into the vastness of the night sky and realise your insignificance, and then flips it. We might be tiny, the song says, but what matters is what we are to one another. “I’ll be here in the light of the stars,” sings Rob, and in the end that’s all that matters.

“Having a kid so young gave me a way of looking at how people act towards each other, especially with children,” he explains. “There’s a song on the album called ‘Heaven Knows’ that wonders if maybe we were happier when we had more social boundaries, not fewer. I’m not religious but you wonder if some things – not everything, but some things – might have been a bit better in the days when we all went to church on a Sunday, dealt with all the grief and misery of the week, and came out feeling better. I think people are missing those boundaries.”

“The record is about trying to be the best person you can possibly be,” he continues, “And I think that’s what most people want from themselves. You want to be a better human being. I write from the point of view of being a dad, and worrying about the world my kid is growing up in. The world focuses so much on the individual – iPhone, iPad, I, I, me, me all the time – and there’s something unhealthy about it. We feel cut off from other people. But if music is good at anything, it’s reconnecting us.”

Rob’s mum likes to remind him of a tale from when he was perhaps four years old. They’d got off a train in comfortable Freshfield near Southport, where footballers and businessmen reside in spacious houses near the woods and the beach. Little Rob pointed to one of the big houses. See that, mum? he said. When I’m a rich rock star I’ll buy you one of those.

“Daft, isn’t it?” he says, laughing. “I was only four. But the thing is, I didn’t really want to be rich. I just never, ever wanted to do anything else but this. It’s been hard work getting here but I’ve never, ever wanted to pack it in. I know what I’m here for – to do this. It’s always been music for me. One hundred per cent.”

The Roseville Band [+]

Free Entry Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

1. The Roseville Band 2013 web

Exciting Welsh music makers The Roseville Band return with their eagerly anticipated third album Temper. The band, who hail from
the green country of North Wales, deliver explosive driven rock ‘n’ roll, and have been patiently building a reputation for their high
energy live shows and stadium filling potential, which threatens to be fulfilled with this new offering. Forming the creative nucleus
of the band are the guitarist brothers Andy and Steve Jones, who grew up in the North Wales countryside, in a house – Roseville –
which over time drew in a community of friends and musicians from the surrounding area, giving rise to The Roseville Band in late
2006.
Having developed a cult following in their native Wales with the releases of their first two albums, Little Eyes In The Universe
(PIAS 2010) and Shake The Walls (PIAS 2011), the band have earned support and mentions from the likes of NME, The Guardian
and a host of online bloggers. Debuting with sessions and airplay on XFM, BBC Wales and Balcony TV, they’ve since progressed to
reach new audiences around the world with press and airplays across Europe, the USA and Canada.
Live, The Roseville Band have a commendably intense work ethic – 500+ shows to date – establishing their reputation as fervently
committed performers. An eventual tour of Europe, alongside triumphant performances at Glastonbury Festival, Sound City, and
FOCUS Wales were eventually topped off with invitations to perform across the pond at Canadian Music Week and NXNE. During
these trips the band previewed new material, attracting new industry admirers, resulting in them being dubbed “Standout
International Act of NXNE 2012,” and later being signed to Pipe & Hat Records in Canada.
2013 finds the band as a leaner four-piece, and now, bringing a more aggressive and alternative slant to their music, which has
them primed for new frontiers upon the imminent release of Temper. The new album is sure to catch many by surprise, and
particularly those familiar with the band’s first two LPs, which largely reflected the band’s earlier influences, where echoes of
Dylan and The Band featured heavily. By contrast Temper is a completely different beast, seeing the band finally coming into their
own and posing a far more intriguing and ambitious proposition to that of their previous offerings. “Take It” and title track
“Temper” highlight this exciting new chapter as well as any, presenting a band loaded with ideas and a new approach that sets
them apart from their contemporaries.
This is the music of a band that has experienced life and the world on the road, providing them with new territories into which they
willingly delve, culminating in a new record full of melodrama, verve, and a gut punching force that draws on everything from The
Clash and Echo & The Bunnymen to fresher influences such as Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse. Brought to life by a freshly charged
rhythm section, dark brooding guitars, and vocal melodies you could hang your coat on, they all play their own significant part in
creating an explosive new sound that’s set to light up stages and airwaves alike.

Folkazm with Mark Henderson & Co. feat. Rob Vincent [+]

Thursday 6th June – Free Entry

Folk, Roots and Blues provided by Mark Henderson & Co. on Telford’s intimate Window Stage. See some of the best acoustic acts from the Northwest up close and personal. This week we feature, Radio 2 & 6 Music playlist artist Rob Vincent…

Rob Vincent

Read more… »

Everything Is Now presents… The Quangos [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

The Quangos

Inspired by the iconic and revolutionary music from the era of Sam & Dave, Ray Charles and The Spencer Davis group, The Quangos perform songs which send their sell-out crowds into dancing and singing reminiscent of a time when that’s what music was about.

Fronted by the enigmatic soul voiced ‘Josh Goddard’, the hotly tipped ‘Quangos’ write and perform songs which are both strikingly inventive and leave the listener humming the chorus on the night bus home. “Crammed with needle-sharp hooks and delivered with a breathless intensity, it is lifted beyond retro fetishism by its sheer youthful exuberance and singer Goddard’s raspy croon.” The Manchester Evening News

The song writing team of Phil Nixon and Josh Goddard pen hook laden songs which inspire references to such seminal bands as ‘The La’s, ‘The Coral’, ‘The Spencer Davis Group’ & ‘Traffic’. The Quangos line up is perfectly complemented by the bass playing talents of Drew Palmer and the sticksmanship of Scot Parkinson.

Touring incessantly around the UK & Europe including appearances at the ‘Beached Festival’ in Manchester, ‘Secret Garden’ festival this forthcoming summer, their residency at the renown ‘Cavern Club’ and appearances in Switzerland, France and Germany as well as recently headlining the BBC Introducing night in Manchester. The Quangos are fast becoming a finely honed live act and one of THE acts to see live.

If you miss the time when the mechanics of a song came from the soul of the songwriter, then get yourself down to see The Quangos.

“Do not allow yourself to be fooled by the name; this is no quasi non-governmental organisation. They are Manchester’s rising star.” The Times

Everything Is Now presents… Gabby Young & Other Animals [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Gabby Young’s twisting roots have carried her and that stunning voice from her native Wiltshire around the UK to land with a bang at the centre of London’s music scene. The youngest ever recruit to the National Youth Choir at the age of 12, Gabby was on track to become an opera singer until Jeff Buckley and the jazz greats inspired her to switch teams. ‘My family was equestrian and sporty, but I liked being by myself – a bit of a recluse, really. Still, I did all the styles from goth to hippy to punk.’

Whilst still in her teens Gabby frequented open mic nights and played with a spectrum of bands before recording her first solo record in her bedroom before she turned 21. Gabby’s unique perspective of the world around her is inspired as much by imagination as real events, but whenthyroid cancer threatened to take her classically trained voice at the age of 22, she got serious about recording her stories. Using her recovery time to pen her melodies, Gabby took in global influences to fuel her heartfelt emotion which shines through her beautifully haunting songs. ‘I feel blessed rather than afflicted,’ she says simply.

Gabby promoted gigs at and built up audience at the Ear Music nights at Monkey Chews, the infamous Kentish Town pub where she met drummer and guitarist (and beau) Stephen Ellis. In 2008 Gabby formed the 8-piece band who complete the magical musical fairground we know today, using a wide range of instruments, most notably trumpet, trombone, piano and clarinet. Young’s avant-garde fusion of globally-influenced folk combines Balkan brass, jazz and swing in an aural antiques shop from the future to produce what has been affectionately dubbed Circus Swing by those who realised there was no existing genre to encompass Young’s sound. Aynsley Lister Band [+]

Aynsley_Robin2_ICON

“Superb” – THE TIMES
“His guitar playing is a fire hazard” – MOJO

When explosive natural ability collides with fiery, emotionally charged compositions, the result is Aynsley Lister; an incredible guitarist whose brand of blues-based rock delivers contemporary song writing fueled with the kind of heart and soul that’s missing from so much modern music.  Whether passionately writing and recording his own material or mesmerising audiences at his live shows one thing is abundantly clear: music is hard-wired to his DNA and flows from his fingertips like sonic bolts of lightning.  With over 86,000 albums sold, lashings of critical acclaim and years of high profile touring, Lister’s resumé speaks for itself and firmly secures his position as a leading light in the resurgence of British blues-infused music.

In hindsight, it’s clear Aynsley was born to be a musician.  As a child he was hypnotised by his dad’s old guitar and at the age of eight was finally gifted his very own.  The moment he held that first six-string the outcome was inevitable; he was going to be a guitarist.  Blessed with the coolest dad in town, regularly spinning Hendrix, Cream, Fleetwood Mac and a whole host of bewitching blues for his spellbound son, Aynsley taught himself to play with relentless dedication and a precociously attuned ear, spending hours copying his favourite records note for note.  Peter Green, Albert King, Clapton and Kossoff weren’t just his heroes; they became his teachers.

Blazing a trail in a bar band from the age of 13 honed his skills.  By 18 he’d started singing and had also formed his first group, during which time he landed a dream support slot with Buddy Guy and released two low key CD’s featuring his earliest original material.  In 1998 those self-penned titles caught the attention of Ruf Records owner Thomas Ruf, who immediately signed Aynsley and hooked him up with Stevie Ray Vaughan’s producer Jim Gaines.  With a maturity that belied his years, the self titled debut announced Aynsley Lister as a major new talent and kicked off a successful relationship with Ruf Records, releasing 7 albums and 2 DVD’s in ten years.  Their influence, coupled with his dynamite live shows and intense touring schedule, earned high profile support slots with established artists like Walter Trout, John Mayall and Robert Cray, whilst rousing festival appearances alongside artists like the Fun Lovin’ Criminals cemented his standing as an artist whose work, although rooted in blues, transcended the genre with a fiery modern sound that was eagerly embraced by fans of rock, pop, soul and acoustic music alike.  In 2007 Aynsley was the only British artist to be named in Classic Rock magazine’s “Top 10 Contemporary Blues Artists”, alongside John Mayer, Derek Trucks and Joe Bonamassa.

In 2008 Aynsley’s huge crossover potential saw him sign to Manhaton Records, where he released the best two albums of his career to date.  Produced by Steve Darrel Smith and featuring Paul McCartney guitarist Robbie Macintosh, 2009’s ‘Equilibrium’ exposed Lister in his best ever form, throwing all his musical influences into a delicious melting pot that delivered sultry melodies, full throttle hard rock riffage and introspective ballads.  ‘Equilibrium’ received fantastic reviews and  stormed into Classic Rock’s Top 50 Albums of 2009.  The subsequent tour saw Aynsley playing to sold out shows to over 16,000 people whilst opening for the legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd, after which he and his band relocated to the Tower Arts Centre and with the tape rolling, nailed a cracking rendition of their high-octane live set to produce the storming ‘Tower Sessions’ record, which was consequently voted ‘Best Live Album’ in the 2011 Blues Matters Writers Poll.

With his stock firmly in the ascendancy Aynsley is currently hard at work on his next record, intent on creating the finest album of his career.  He’s wisely chosen to refine the material the best way he knows how; by playing it live.  “When you record songs in the studio and then go out and tour, they evolve and take on a life of their own.  I want to capture that on the new record and want a whole album of songs that translate to the live setting as well as being well written enough to engage the listener of an album”.  The eagerly anticipated new material, slated for release in early 2013, will be distributed on his manager’s label as he’s sagely decided to take control of his career by bringing everything in-house, following other successful artists who’ve cut out the record companies with astonishing results.  Needless to say, a tour in support of that album will surely follow, and that promises to be something special, not just for the fans, but for the main man himself:

“Music is a release for me.  When I play I get lost in it and it’s a very happy place to be”  – Aynsley Lister

Banda Bacana [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

This vibrant, North Wales based, 7 piece draws upon a wealth of varied and impressive musical backgrounds to create fresh and exhilarating dancefloor-filling sounds. Playing some seriously catchy tunes, they go from slinky Latin grooves through supple Afrobeat and Caribbean  rhythms to James Brown inspired funk.

Our most recent calculations tell us that the band have a combined musical experience of roughly 300 years! No we’re not kidding, we’ll even throw in the statistic that each player boasts to be able to play at least 2 instruments and have a wide range of different musical backgrounds from World, Rock, Folk, Latin, Jazz, Afro and Blues this combines beautifully to make the sound that you hear today.

Banda Bacana started it’s journey 10 years ago through the local samba band in Bangor, where Kate was a member. Here she met John the bass player who was contributing his talents to Samba Bangor’s album, and Zé, an amazing multi-instrumentalist producer from Recifé that Samba Bangor had the opportunity to work with. Kate was learning bossa nova guitar at the time and they decided it would be fun to get together and play some music. Zé went back to Brazil but John and Kate carried on.

It’s amazing how the past 10 years have seen players come and go and the band has taken on various forms but the current line up has been pretty solid for a good 6 or 7 years with input from a vast array of richly talented musicians.

After making an album in 2009 the band have been constantly busy and in popular demand with at least 1 or 2 gigs a week (not bad going for a band where most of the players have full time jobs!). Nowadays the band comprises between 7-9 players, based on availability as most of them contribute to the North Wales music scene by being part of 1 or even two other bands or ensembles! The band play groove and harmony based music with influences such as Afro, Latin, Reggae, Funk and any other type of Tropical music you can think of! With 3 members having been part of the Samba band at some point, and the rest just being extremely talented musicians, it creates a magic solid groove and beat that is so infectious you would find it hard to keep still.

The band’s CV stretches from pubs, to weddings, to parties, village fetes, festivals and beyond! One of the first gigs to put the band on the map was organised by Byd Mawr local world music promoters who brought bands such as The Mighty Diamonds, Johnny Clarke and Nuru Kane to the area. They have supported and been supported by many local events and have had regular appearances at places such as Conwy Feast, Dragon Theatre in Barmouth, Hendre Hall, Galeri Caernarfon, The Heights Llanberis and Trefriw village Hall.

The band have also had the privilege of playing at some fantastic festivals and sharing the bill with the likes of Maroon Town, Geraint Jarman, Riot Jazz Brass Band and playing the main stages at festivals such as Beatherder, Kaya Festival, Ymuno Festival, Sheep Music and Gwyl Arall. Another amazing experience in July this year was making their way onto the S4C stage at Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod but the highlight so far was Cuban giants Sierra Maestra in 2010 at a home gig put on by local promoters, Pontio.

We look forward to the next chapter in our book, new album and video on the horizon, a decade of fine music to celebrate and many other interesting gigs to be played! Who knows….maybe even Womad?

Everything Is Now DJ Set [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

everything-is-now

Tony (Anthony Green) Bear is a DJ, multi instrumentalist and composer based in Chester, North West England. As drummer and founding member of ‘ahead of their time’(!) psychedelic space funk pioneers ‘The Fourth Egg’, Tonys’ tentative steps into the world of music began in his early teens.

Throughout the 1990?s Tony studied music and media production at South Cheshire College, West Cheshire College and The North East Wales Institute (now Glyndwr University) in Wrexham.
Through gigging with his band, Tony met and became friendly with a bunch of local djs/promoters and there began his love affair with nightclubs, loud sound systems and entertaining audiences with music in a completely different way from just sitting behind a drum kit or playing the guitar.

“Having been a music fan for years I was already buying most of the records that my mates were playing in the clubs and when I got fed up with being in bands it seemed like an obvious and natural thing to do to switch to djing. It meant I still got the ‘gig buzz’ but without having to put up with a bunch of unreliable musicians and their ‘oh no yoko’ girlfriends.”

Over the next few years, through a combination of luck, bad luck, stupidity and dogged perseverance, Tony has gigged in and around the North West/North Wales/Merseyside area in a variety of different clubs and to a wide range of audiences. Tony was also a resident DJ at John Lockes’ infamous ‘Trash’ night (Fridays @ High Society, Rafaels, Love Street) for the best part of a decade.

“If you care about what you do, and as the years roll by, your appreciation and love for music deepens somewhat. Obviously, you’re going to want to express that when you go out and play music to people. When I go clubbing or to a gig, I want to hear a satisfyingly wide range of tunes plus a bunch of stuff I don’t know. That’s how we learn. I don’t want to hear the same beat all night or the repetitive nostalgia of somebody elses’ half remebered student yesteryears. But, hey, let’s not get all philosophical about this, it’s meant to be a laugh isn’t it?”

Tony is currently working on his own original music (because he misses being in a band, shhh it’s a secret) and is a resident DJ at Telfords’ Warehouse in Chester. He plays the first Saturday of every month under his ‘Everything is Now’ moniker.

” If you look back over the last fifty or sixty years of popular music, there’s literally millions of songs and records out there that still sound just as good today as when they were released. My mate Ed said ‘If it can be played now then it’s a now record.’ I tend to agree, but that’s only half the story. These days, when I DJ I want to blend all those hip tracks from back in the day with contemporary stuff because whether you like it or not, good music is being released all the time. I love big fat electronic beats, trippy bleeps and massive bass etc. It’s all about striking the right balance on the dancefloor… and having fun.”

Some artists to have played… Heymoonshaker, Banda Bacana, Freedom Of Expression, Cantaloop, We The Undersigned, Electric Swing Circus, Gabby Young & Other Animals, Honeyfeet

Tankus The Henge [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Tankus the Henge - Jump Hi Res

Tankus the Henge are six sharp dressed and bedraggled gentlemen hailing from some of the more eccentric parts of London Town. Their music draws from a multitudinous array of influences including rock, ragtime, reggae, blues, funk, disco, gypsy punk and Django.

With a big beat and a carnival air it will get you out of your seat and dancing the tango.

“Imagine Suggs, The Clash and Paolo Nutini mixing a musical Ska recipe ..”

Glasswerk Magazine

“Roll up and enter the dark carnival of Tankus the Henge, you will not regret one second of its fantastic touch… one of the most thrilling and sensationally addictive releases this year.”

Ringmaster Review

“Imagine Madness with 2 drops of LSD. Totally original, completely non-contrived vaudeville psychobilly. That’s a new one…”

Joyzine

The band’s recent single Cakewalk featured on Chris Hawkins’ 6 Music show as well as Alex Lester’s Radio 2 show. The current line-up was completed in 2011 and since then the band has been either on the road or holed up in a recording studio working on their eponymously titled debut album, released in 2013 on SRM Records. With wailing horns and a steaming piano in tow, Tankus the Henge have toured the far reaches of America, Europe, Albania and the Isle of Wight, bringing with them their electrical energy and fascinating tales of wonder and woe.

A six piece powerhouse of a band drawing visual and musical influences from old time Fairgrounds to modern day Circus; The Beatles to Tom Waits and Gogol Bordello to Radiohead, they embody a look and a sound that lies somewhere between their South East London home and the carnival town of New Orleans. With their charismatic frontman, Jaz Delorean, looking like a lost character from a Terry Gilliam film and the pump nd grind of the Tankus the Henge sound generating a groove that makes it impossible to stand still, their live show ebbs and flows like a small boat on a turbulent sea.

Any other band who billed themselves as “the most fantastic band in the world” would rightly quake in their boots at having to live up to such fanfare.

Tankus the Henge defy you to contradict them!
