Folkazm with Mark Henderson & Co. feat. Rob Vincent [+]

Thursday 6th June – Free Entry

Folk, Roots and Blues provided by Mark Henderson & Co. on Telford’s intimate Window Stage. See some of the best acoustic acts from the Northwest up close and personal. This week we feature, Radio 2 & 6 Music playlist artist Rob Vincent…

Rob Vincent

If there’s a lot of half-finished, semi-fulfilled, vaguely unsatisfying music around these days – songs that say nothing to you about your life – then maybe it’s because the people who make it haven’t lived much of a life themselves.

Not so in the case of Robert Vincent, the searingly honest Liverpool singer-songwriter whose mix of folk, rock and country is like a Mersey Van Morrison or a Scouse Springsteen.

Born into a house that rang to the sounds of Johnny Cash, The Beatles and Pink Floyd, Robert knew before he was five years old that he wanted to be a musician. When he became a father at 17 he had to balance the hard graft of life in a working band with the responsibility of providing for a family. He’s seen setbacks and false dawns, he’s come near to success only to have it snatched away, but he’s never lost his faith in his music. And now that faith is coming good.

“I’ve done the whole thing of trying to be what people want me to be,” Rob explains in his warm and good-humoured Scouse drawl, “And in the end I just thought I’ve had enough of this. The songs I’ve written now, some of them sound like Johnny Cash and some of them like 50s rock’n’roll – but they’re what *I* wanted to write. And the funny thing is, the more honest I am the better people like it.”

The result is Rob’s debut album ‘Life In Easy Steps’: a set of songs that are alternately as open and empathic as ‘Second Chance’, and as raw and righteous as ‘Riots Cry’ – all held together by a singular lyrical vision and a voice that can soothe, comfort or tear down a wall. In a sea of plastic pop, this is real rock and roll. Read more… »

As a duo, David and Jessica have performed numerous gigs, including private parties, New years celebrations, and weddings throughout North Wales and Cheshire. They provide entertainment for all venues and functions from their varied repertoire of covers and also write and record their own material. Their repertoire spans from 50’s rock and roll to modern pop encompassing classic rock, country blues and indie in between.

Jessica Ball – Guitar/Vocals

Born in North Wales and having grown up in South Africa, Jessica’s music career started in 2006 where she attended the National School of Arts in Johannesburg, studying Contemporary Music. In 2010, she arrived back in Wales to pursue her singing career. Since then, Jessica’s original music has received national radio airplay and media coverage as a solo artist and as part of her band, Warsisters. She has appeared twice at Focus Wales festival and performs gigs regularly throughout Wales and England. Jessica is also a renowned guitar tutor, providing lessons in the North Wales area.

David Burton – Guitar/Vocals

Hailing from North Wales, David Burton is an accomplished songwriter and instrumentalist who has composed many thought-provoking and foot tapping songs. He has performed live up and down the country both solo and with his previous band, The Invisible Wires, for over ten years supporting fine artists such as Eric Roche and also playing backup guitar for numerous talented singer songwriters including a stint with Duffy. His virtuoso guitar skills leave audiences open-mouthed as he performs his own compositions whilst also playing tribute to the work of acoustic guitar heroes such as John Renbourn, Bert Jansch and Pierre Bensusan.

The Smiths Indeed [+]

£10 Tickets

The Smiths Indeed 1

The Smiths Indeed were formed in Liverpool in 2005, after a deceptively placed advertisement [SINGER NEEDED TO FRONT SMITHS COVER BAND. MUST BE TALENTED. GIGS WAITING.] caught the eye of an ambitious aficionado. The band consists of Smiths devotees and outstanding musicians. Their trump card is a singer with uncannily similar vocal chords to Morrissey’s. In a relatively short space of time, The Smiths Indeed have emerged as a fantastic live act, aiming to capture the essence of a mid-1980s Smiths concert. And flailing.

They have toured extensively around the United Kingdom, the USA and Europe, playing to full capacity audiences of Smiths fans old and new in – among other places – Newcastle, Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool, Brighton, Glasgow and Los Angeles. Their first gig in December 2005 was in a small basement bar in Glasgow; the final gig of 2010 saw them triumphantly celebrating the 25th anniversary of Meat Is Murder at Manchester Apollo. “It goes on… goes on… goes on… goes on… goes on.”

The Smiths Indeed offer a fantastic night of nostalgia for those who remember those distant days in the mid-1980s when The Smiths lit up the world of popular music. For those who weren’t even born then or were otherwise engaged, they offer a great opportunity to witness what it might have been like to see The Smiths live. After all, a Smiths Indeed show is meant to be a celebration of The Smiths. Apportez vos fleurs.

“a brilliant tribute to The Smiths”. i-D Magazine
