Nick Harper [+]

Tuesday 8th November – Tickets £10.00

To call Nick a superlative singer/songwriter could put his highly lauded guitar talent in the shade, and to call him a guitarist’s guitarist might slight his distinctive, soulful voice and passionate songs. Not forgetting the wild ride that is one of his live shows – from personal introspection to biting political satire via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud. He often segues from his own compositions to well-loved covers he makes his own – he takes on Presley, Zappa, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, Monty Python and Public Enemy (yes, on an acoustic guitar). He also has the alarming ability to break guitar strings almost by sheer force of will… and then change them without dropping a beat. For over a decade, he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with this heady mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado.

The Mouse outfit is a 10 piece live hip hop band based in Manchester, comprising of drums, samplers, keys, synths, guitar, bass, saxophones, trumpet, flute and vocals.

They have gigged relentlessly around the UK over the last 2 years,  supporting many of their influences including – Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Youngblood Brass Band, Akil the MC (Jurassic 5), Souls of Mischief, The Sugarhill Gang, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), DJ Format, The Nextmen, 6ix Toys, Louis Logic, The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show, DJ Vadim, The Herbaliser, Fabio.

In 2010 the band played two live sessions for the BBC at Maida Vale, first for BBC Radio 1 and secondly for the Mark Lamarr show on Radio 2. The group have also received support from The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show, and The Ras Kwame Homegrown podcasts from BBC 1Extra.

DR SYNTAX

The Mouse Outfit have recently started guesting UK hip hop legend Dr Syntax on live performances.  Having cut his teeth on tracks with Foreign Beggar’s on their debut album ‘Asylum Speakers’, Doc Synners soon gained a reputation as one of the UK’s most talented wordsmiths and charismatic performers.

His 2007 solo album Self Taught received widespread acclaim and was featured in Hip Hop Connection’s Top 100 Albums of the Year. With keen eyed social commentary, contemplative musings on life and straight up cold rhyming, Syntax has showcased his abilities all over the UK and further afield with performances at Glastonbury, Hip Hop Kemp in the Czech Republic and Splash Festival in Germany.

In addition to brand new tracks from forthcoming EPs, The Mouse Outfit and Dr Syntax live shows will feature material from his second album ‘Benny Huge’, available on Dented Records.

Aynsley Lister [+]

Tuesday 15th November – Tickets £10.00

Aynsley has never been an artist to reheat the music of yesteryear. Influenced from an early age by the 60’s RnB era, Lister takes these key elements and mixes them with a more current and melodic lyrical approach.

He is one of very few artists playing blues infused rock with a modern edge -tangible, heartfelt, soul searching and full of fine songwriting; played with passion and vitality. His hard hitting rhythms and guitar work are reminiscent of a young Clapton.

Lister began his career when he signed to Ruf Records in 1998. During his time on the label he worked with producers such as Jim Gaines (SRV, Santana) and Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers) and recorded four studio albums, two live albums and two DVD’s. However, if these earlier albums were Lister making his mark as a well respected blues rock artist, it was when he signed to Manhaton Records in June 2008 that he showed he had more commercial appeal to a bigger audience.

Thea Gilmore – 2011 Wintertide Tour [+]

All Tickets Sold Out

“Here’s to tonic, here’s to gin, here’s to sparks and here’s to gasoline…” You’re The Radio

We are lucky to have musicians like Thea Gilmore, musicians that want more from themselves and more from music than some pre-formed, whistle-friendly cud, something to chew on but never fully digest. In an age where artists – male and female – tend to be either hyper-sexualised or completely neutered, Gilmore is that rare creature, an actual adult with a heart and a soul, a grown up with an opinion. Thea Gilmore is a real person tackling the sort of issues real people deal with every day, only, unlike the rest of us, she tackles those issues with an utterly beautiful voice and songs that touch on folk and jazz and rock and Americana.

Not for no reason does Bruce Springsteen buy her records, do artistes ranging from Martha Wainwright to Mike Scott seek to collaborate with her, and not for no reason does Tom Waits’ celebrated percussionist Michael Blair appear on Murphy’s Heart, Gilmore’s tenth album – one that follows a sustained period of artistic and critical success.

2008’s Liejacker was a deeply personal collection that included a track with Joan Baez. It was, in Gilmore’s words, “the lovechild of whisky and heartache”. The Observer seemed to agree, noting that these songs would, “make your heart catch, your skin prickle and your eyes fill with tears”, which seems a good place to start. The Times said that last year’s Strange Communion was so good it just proved that Gilmore is, “unarguably one of the finest singer-songwriters of her generation.”  There is the sense of a tipping point being reached. Album ten is a serious landmark release in anyone’s book except, perhaps, that one owned by the artist in question.

Emanuel & The Fear (USA) [+]

Free Entry Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

With DJ Adam Walton (BBC Radio)

Emanuel and the Fear is a Brooklyn Rock Outfit (from here on out referred to as BRO).  There are many BRO’s in today’s world, but Emanuel and the Fear is the only one that brings 1-200 band members to the stage depending on how they’re feeling that particular evening.

You’re probably wondering what this BRO sounds like?  So are they.

Until they figure that out, they’ve been known to sound like a synth pop band, a heavy metal act with strings, an Irish pub band, a riot, a summer storm, 336 spiders/ants crawling up you legs and into your ears, a classic rock band, a really bad power ballad that despite knowing it’s really bad everyone loves, and due to their recent popularity…The Arcade Fire.  It’s members play/have worked with the likes of The National, From Autumn to Ashes, Sufjan Stevens, Zao, Akron/Family, Ryan Star, and The Canadian Brass.

Having spent hours laboring in the studio for their first two releases, the band took a more organic approach for the new self-released EPHands, by writing and rehearsing the tracks in the 2 months they toured Europe in 2010.  They then recorded and mixed the whole record in 4 days, mostly live in the studio.

“Hands” will be released exactly June 10th, 2011 and will be available everywhere, thanks to the internet. It will be leaked approximately one month prior to June 10th, 2011 also thanks to the internet.

This BRO has been written about!  Sources from the likes of Flavorpill, NME, Village Voice, The Guardian, Paste, Rolling Stone (Germany) and Vice (Germany) have all had something nice to say about Emanuel and the Fear.   They’ll be playing this summer around the northeast of America and are currently booked for the End of the Road Festival in England with a UK/Europe tour to follow.

Emanuel and the Fear may be, at any given time:

Drums – Jeff Gretz
Bass – Gil Goldin
Synth/Vocals – Dallin Applebaum
Guitar – Dan Tirer
Flute – Nic Cowles
Violin – Tom Swafford
Violin/Vocals – Liz Hanley
Cello – Brian Sanders
Trombone – David Nelson
Trumpet – Chris Coletti
Guitar/Piano/Vocals – Emanuel Ayvas

King King [+]

Tickets £10.00

“Softly softly” is not a maxim that King King are familiar with. Since surging into life two years ago they have barely stopped for breath, and their electrifying sound and scorching live shows have generated more of a thunderous roar than a buzz.

Straight out of the blocks it was clear that King King is a band which knows how to make an entrance. An exhilarating debut at the Monaghan Blues Festival created such a stir that it prompted organizer Somhairle MacConghail to remark: “King King aren’t just playing the festival. Word is that King King ARE the festival”. With a reception like this there’s little surprise that the phone has been ringing off the hook ever since, and the last year has seen them bring their inimitable brand of multi-faceted blues rock to the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival, the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, Abertillery Festival and even Glastonbury. This was in addition to a seemingly non-stop series of rousing live shows across the UK and Europe, much to the delight of the band’s burgeoning fan base.

In the midst of all this, a particular highlight of 2010 was King King’s invitation to perform within the hallowed walls of the BBC’s Maida Vale studios. The boys’ set went out on Radio 2 and won the approval of DJ and blues aficionado Paul Jones who was moved to remark: “Here at Radio 2, we think Alan Nimmo and King King are going to go all the way”.

Having signed to Manhaton Records, next came a return to Chapel Studios to record the eagerly anticipated debut album. King King are familiar faces having recorded their critically acclaimed EP Broken Heal at the studio, and again collaborated with the production team behind the Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and the Editors.
The resulting album, Take My Hand, is a bold and wildly enjoyable collection of songs showcasing King King’s unique sound, swaggering from Stones-tinged blues rock through throbbing funk to reflective ballad and back.

Tickets £9.00 / £7.00 for CAMRA members

Following on from the success of our 1st ever beer festival last October, Telford’s is delighted to announce our first Meet The Brewer evening on Thursday, April 12th.

For our first evening we’ve invited along the good folks from Tatton Brewery along to pass on some of their knowledge.

On the night Gregg Sawyer, Owner and Head Brewer will be available to talk about his brewery and the beers they produce, whilst our friendly and skilled bar staff man the pumps.  Here is a little overview of the brewery from their website :

Tatton Brewery is a family  business, based in Knutsford in the heart of Cheshire. By combining a custom built modern brewery, an historic local yeast, and years of experience producing internationally renowned recipes we aim to brew Cheshire’s finest beers.

Our brewery has been specifically designed for consistency and quality, we know that each and every pint we deliver needs to be as good as the last.

Bob Log III [+]

Tickets £10.00

Bob Log III in his blue full-body Cannonball man suit and a face-shield wired with a headset microphone is one of the best, fastest and strangest American Delta Blues Slide Guitar player of today

Bob Log III was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona. Moved to  Tucson AZ and now living in MelbourneAustralia

“You take a guitar, turn it up and have a good time” in the early 90’s he Formed together with Thermos Malling the incredible DOO RAG who’s pioneered the whole Blues ‘punk’ or Even Tekkno Scene at this time, the Band Split off and Bob Log (b. Robert Reynolds III ) continued alone as the One Man Band, Touring all over the Globe North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, Mexico, and Iceland.

he acquired a kick-drum and a homemade foot cymbal which he custom-outfitted with a kick pedal of its own. These instruments, combined with his slide guitar work, distorted telephone microphone vocals, and Boom-Chik-a-Boom drum machine accompaniment, form the framework on which Bob Log constructs his songs. Log describes his on-stage setup in the song “One Man Band Boom,” introducing himself to the audience as, “Bob Log the third, one-man band, Tucson, Arizona. Heyeeeh! Lemme introduce the band to ya. On cymbals, left foot. Over here on the bass drum we got right foot. Shut up! This is my left hand that does all the slide work, right hand does the pickin’. My mouth hole does most o’ the talkin’. And you’re looking at my finger.”

In the summer of 1998, Log signed to Fat Possum to issue his solo debut, School Bus; Trike, now signed with Voodoo Rhythm Records in 2008 for ‘my shit is perfect’

TOM WAITS : “And then there’s this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He’s this little kid — nobody ever knows how old he is — wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can’t see his face, and plays slide guitar. It’s just the loudest strangest stuff you’ve ever heard. You don’t understand one word he’s saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That’s what I aspire to basically.”

MILTON BERLE “Hey kid…. DO what thou wilt.”
ROBERT PLANT “Dear Bob, it’s been ages since Sweden.”
