Richard James
New album ‘Pictures In The Morning’ released 23rd April 2012 on Gwymon

Richard James, co-founder of seminal psych-folk band Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, releases his third album, ‘Pictures in the Morning’ on the Gwymon label on April 23rd.

His first two albums, ‘The Seven Sleepers Den’ and ‘We Went Riding’ were very well received, and as a part of Gorky’s he toured extensively all over the world as well as recording eight albums and numerous ep’s and singles during a thirteen year period.

He has recently started a new project called Pen Pastwn, with a two-hour collection of songs, instrumentals and sound collage in the process of being finished, and a free EP entitled ‘In France’ released online at inchapters.com in December 2011.

He took the band on a week-long trip to Sudan with The British Council in February, and a short film of the trip can be seen on the website. Together with the writer John Williams, he started In Chapters almost three years ago, a music and literary collective based in Cardiff, where Richard is musical director, staging unique multi-media events with writers and musicians in collaboration, as well as the online content. He is in the process of starting a label with musical collaborator and friend Gareth Bonello (aka The Gentle Good), with solo gigs and Pen Pastwn shows coming up during the year.

The Gentle Good

The Gentle Good is also known as Cardiff born Gareth Bonello, a Welsh folk singer and songwriter. His honest and tender vocals are well matched to an intricate guitar style that owes much to the great guitarists of the 60s folk revival. A dedicated multi-instrumentalist his recordings are layered with subtle string arrangements as well as banjos, mandolins and glockenspiels.

Following a series of self released EPs, the debut album ‘While You Slept I Went Out Walking’ was released by Gwymon records in November 2008. The album received praise in the critical press, with Gareth variously being compared to Nick Drake, Martin Carthy, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, John Martyn and Donovan by the likes of Mojo and the Guardian. The mighty Bob Harris repeatedly lavished high praise on the album on his Saturday night show and radio stations throughout the UK have gradually begun to play The Gentle Good.

A captivating live performer, The Gentle Good can enchant an audience with just a guitar, weaving dark stories amongst tragic folk songs as he performs. Recent developments have seen Gareth perform with a string section – delivering a more complete sound closer to those heard on his records.

The Gentle Good is an experienced live act, having delighted audiences at home and abroad at festivals such as Celtic Connections, Lorient Interceltique, The Green Man, End of the Road, Latitude, Swn Festival, In the City, South by Southwest and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

In the summer of 2009 The Gentle Good was one of 12 bands selected through the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition to perform at Glastonbury Festival.
