The Beatelles [+]

Saturday 1st December

Free Before 9pm, £4.00 Thereafter

The Beatelles are one of the world’s top female Beatles tribute bands and the only one from the UK, they’re also all ‘scousers’ just like the Fab Four themselves.

They believe The Beatles made the best music ever written and seek to play it with the soul and passion it deserves, but with a feminine edge! Playing a lot of The Beatles later material from iconic albums such as Abbey Road and The White Album, the girls have a reputation for putting their own twist on the songs; giving the audience a fresh and contemporary take on The Beatles music.

With an ever growing fan base at their live shows, they perform across the UK and Internationally – including shows at Liverpool’s own world famous Cavern Club.

Being the first female Beatles tribute band from the UK has created opportunities to perform with famous bands and solos acts including ‘The Persuaders’, ‘Denny Laine’ (from Moody Blues and Wings), ‘Hal Bruce’ and his ‘Summer of Love’ band, ‘The Swinging Blue Jeans’, ‘The Pete Best Band’, ‘Apple Jam’ from the USA, ‘The Blue Margarets’ from Japan, their mates ‘Revolver’ from Scotland and not forgetting their brothers; Liverpool’s own ‘The Mersey Beatles’.

They have played the Mathew St Festival and International Beatles Week in their own city of Liverpool since 2007. Check out the ‘gig listings page’ for upcoming shows.

Having recently returned from successful concerts in France & Finland, the girls are looking forward to a very busy 2012 and some very exciting times ahead…

Martyn Joseph with support from Luke Jackson [+]

Sold Out

Martyn Joseph is as performer like no other.
Touring in support of a brand new studio album “Songs for the Coming Home”, shades of Springsteen, John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews there may be – but he stands in his own right, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives.
Martyn’s ability to transcend preconceptions about how one man and a guitar can sound is testament to his talent and stage presence. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that there’s more than one musician on stage. The shows are intelligently constructed, Martyn presenting his audience with challenging narratives and with an intensity that hits with the power of a right hook. He tempers this with songs that comfort and speak to the soul. His great improvisation and immediate topicality lead to an organic fluidity that makes every show different. His comfortable rapport and conversation with his audiences, his sense of humour and his ability to make everyone feel at home lie right at the heart of the evenings success.
Juxtaposition is a key theme in Martyn’s work. The simplicity and the complexity of the human condition and all that it encompasses is underpinned with a heady promise of hope. There is a versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures, and stories, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman.
Martyn Joseph. A unique talent driven by passion and love for his trade, continues to write, sing and play from the heart.

“Britain`s best kept secret……a challenging songwriter and a compelling courageous live performer” – MoJo 4* review
“One of the most charismatic and electrifying performers in Britain today…tough and passionate”?Tom Robinson BBC 6 music
“One of acoustic music’s most original voices, and most forward looking of his generation of singer/songwriters”?Q Magazine
“A profound experience”?The Boston Globe
“Songs of social commentary as much as love, with a rootsy sensibility”?Time Out
“Written with craft, performed with passion”?Financial Times
“He is one of our most intelligent writers. He gets better and better like the finest of wines” – Bob Harris – BBC Radio 2

Luke Jackson

On this tour Martyn will be supported by Luke Jackson, a young roots singer songwriter from Canterbury, who performs with passion and writes with a maturity that belies his years. While many of his contemporaries are chasing their 5 minutes of fame in the disposable world of TV talent shows, Luke is ploughing an independent furrow, writing songs of depth and emotional value that connect with audiences the length and breadth of the country.
He is one of the finest emerging talents in the roots and acoustic scene today and is developing into a consummate live performer who once seen, will certainly not be forgotten. His debut album, “More Than Boys”, produced by Martyn, is released in August 2012.

Cerys Matthews – ‘Cerys by Candlelight’ [+]

Monday 10th December – Sold Out

The  ‘Cerys by Candlelight’ Tour will roll into town and snuggle down in the Telford’s Warehouse for a festive feast of music , poetry , and the purely unexpected that makes each and every Cerys Matthews live show a unique experience.

It’s a long way from her late 90s huge Catatonia hits and media bits that were essential to the zeitgeist of the times.   Her talents have since emerged in her widely successful solo albums , ranging from ‘Cock A Hoop’, recorded in Nashville in 2003, through to 2009’s ‘Don’t Look Down’ and the more recent ‘Explorer’ (2011) which did what it said on the tin –  taking the listener around the world in the same way that Cerys’ hugely popular BBC 6Music radio programme has made its reputation as a must- listen for any real music lover on a Sunday morning.

We must mention the beautiful Welsh language album ‘TIR’ (2010) , it is beautiful in its renditions of classic folk songs dear to Miss Matthews, complete with a booklet filled with the detailed background to the songs.  It’s made it the best-selling Welsh language album of the 2000s, most of those sales arising outside of the homeland.

Cerys loves seeking out the magic not just in music, but in the written word. Following on from her first children’s book ‘Tales From The Deep’, published in 2011, she re-states her love of ‘the word’ in her debut book  for Penguin about the history of children’s song (riddled with pages of singalong guides) which will see the light Easter 2013,  before she embarks on a number of projects around her all-time favourite , Dylan Thomas.

In the meantime , we have a new album ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ (2012), featuring 15 winter faves , sung with great gusto and humour , two qualities that no doubt Cerys will be looking for when she visits your local theatre.  Be warned, you will all have little option but to sing along !

Crackling Vinyl Presents Paper Aeroplanes + Support From Shy & The Fight [+]

Tuesday 11th December

£6 Advance / £7 Door

‘My First Love’ video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ap5-hyvHjv0

Sarah and Richard of Paper Aeroplanes grew up 30 miles from each other along the coast of West Wales, in houses you could see the sea from. They spent their formative years walking on cold beaches, messing in rock pools and finding records in charity shops – a world, and  a two hour drive, away from the nearest music scene. Or Topshop.

After a substantial usage on BBC drama Lip Service and recent radio support from  6Music’s Lauren Laverne, Nemone & Cerys Matthews and Steve Lamacq & Bob Harris on Radio 2, Paper Aeroplanes have been very busy. The band have 3 headline tours under their belts and recent sell-out shows in London, Birmingham and Norwich.

Lauren Laverne

We Are Ghosts
Album of the MonthMaverick Magazine

“With songs this good, Paper Aeroplanes deserve a far wider audience.”
BBC Music’s Robin Denselow

“Intimate, jaunty and confident lo-key pop with great melody.”
The Guardian

“My favourite welsh combo since a slice of bara brith and a cup of sweet tea.”
Beat Surrender

A Comfortable Sleep EP Review

“Paper Aeroplanes are an oasis of gravity in a cultural desert of frivolity, of emotion in a cold hearted world. If you’re not in tears by the end of A Comfortable Sleep then you’re either a Stalinist dictator or a statue. 9/10 ” – Paul Kerr, 405

Debut single ‘All That We See Or Seem’ c/w ‘Breaks’ out now on Popty-Ping Records.

‘All That We See Or Seem’:http://youtube.com/watch?v=TsH-pnCMLQs

Shy and the Fight are a six-piece band from the border country between Chester and Llangollen. They write big-hearted songs that roll along on a crest of sparkling guitars, skewed electronics and soaring harmonies. The band are an endearingly charismatic mixture of personalities and influences. Belle & Sebastian, The Beach Boys and rockabilly loom large in their musical landscape. It makes for a rousing and melodic listening experience. Since their inception in 2009, their early demo recordings have earned them airplay – and a BBC Introducing session – from Radio 1 (Jen Long), BBC Radio Merseyside (Dave Monks),  BBC East Midlands (Dean Jackson) and BBC Radio Wales (Adam Walton & Bethan Elfyn).

They’re very much a 21st century band – bristling with ideas, energy and initiative – equally at home selling out hometown shows with queues snaking 1?2 a mile up the road from the venue, busking in town centres, or bewitching audiences at European festivals (Stop Making Sense). It’s an inspirational, DIY ethic: a band of their time, memorably soundtracking their times.

Recent reviews have drawn comparisons to The Delgados, Leisure Society, Los Campesinos, and Frank Turner.

‘All That We See Or Seem’ c/w ‘Breaks’ (PING001) is the band’s first release, a double A-side 7” single on the Popty-Ping record label.

Under the orders of Captain Sugar Lips with his 1st mate, The Horns of Plenty launch their monster horn lines, throwing down Phat dollops of Funkelicious Brass. When all these elements combust the Cantaloop Brotherhood always let the people know they are “CHAAAC-LAT” Cantaloop are a true urban Funk outfit

Cantaloop played at various festivals and legendary venues including Glastonbury Festival (The Jazz World and Avalon stages), Montreux Jazz Festival (Montreux), Blue Balls Festival (Luzern), Moods (Zurich), The Flechedor (Paris), Paradiso (Amsterdam), Larmer Tree Festival (UK), Vicar Street (Dublin), Barrowlands (Glasgow), Ashton Court (Bristol), Jazz Café (London), Cargo (London), Carling Academy (Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol), Rock City (Nottingham)

The ‘Chocolate’ EP is the latest funk-fuelled sweetener from the awesome ‘Cantaloop’. Often described as ‘one of the best live bands out there’ this sees them ever pushing the boundaries in their genre and treating us to their unique ‘C-Funk’ song craft.

Chocolate – is just that, Sweet…. you want more and you bloody-well get it!, this track will sneaks up on ya and twat ya hard and repeatedly from all directions! Just like Ernie the chicken from Family Guy only difference is…. this feels goooooood!!!!

Feisty – kicks off the e.p with the bass bouncing and the Super-Duper-Funk horn line cutting a rug in your minds funk gland. Guitars that sound like Hammond organs but then fire up funkness that the old skool brothers would be proud of, alongside a front line social comment with a chorus hook line as big as J-lo’s butt.

Blessed – this is a tune which shows just how many different places Cantaloop can take you! The guitars start with a sweet line that sticks and pushes. Old skool hip hop vocals which ignite with the horns in the chorus, the trumpet solo is pure summer day cruising along a ocean freeway smoking cigarettes (when ciggies were good) with the top down, fired up by a back beat that just gets you were you need to go! The crescendo towards the end will give you another cigarette (was it good for you?) moment!!! Eeeemmm oh yeah.

Flatline – The curve ball of the e.p it introduces itself as a acoustic finger clicking lament to all things Cantaloop then rocks up with some fuzz fresh guitar sound that mutates into a Mississippi delta Blues Sonny boy Williamson blues harp riff that rocks back up at the end to show while the Cantaloop brotherhood have the know-how to push things forward, they can also take ya back!!

Merry Hell [+]

Saturday 29th December

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Merry Hell: A Northern based 7-piece offering blistering folk/rock with a message. Uplifting, inspiring and insightful in equal measure with an interesting past and a promising future.

Launched in 2011, Merry Hell combine male and female vocals, mandolin, electric guitars, bass, drums and keyboards with an ambition to revolutionise the genre.

Musically they range from the anthemic to the intimate whilst combining lyrical playfulness with astute observation and comment, they offer your favourite songs that you haven’t yet heard plus a live experience that is both infectious and inspiring.  A band with a history, a pedigree and most importantly, a promise for the future.

Merry Hell has risen phoenix-like from the embers of 90’s cult rabble-rousers The Tansads.  – for many who knew them, the finest band never to make it BIG – a quasi folk-punk-rock orchestra that enjoyed a career spanning 5 albums and countless tours. Brought together again in 2010, for 3 triumphant reunion gigs at their spiritual home of The Citadel, St Helens, the venue for their celebratory live album, ‘Drag Down the Moon’.

As the dust settled on the reunion shows, the decision had been made that a revitalized band should take the spirit of The Tansads forward into a new era. So Merry Hell was raised.

The Kettle brothers, John, Bob, and Andrew are back, joined by John’s wife, Virginia, who brings both acoustic guitar and the perfect vocal foil to Andrew’s gravelly delivery. Former Tansads, Lee Goulding on keyboards and drummer Andy Jones consolidate the line-up, completed by bassist Andrew Dawson.

Known for their original, emotionally charged and anthemic songs, this band are just as much at home producing exquisitely crafted recordings in the studio as they are in their high-energy assaults on the souls of live audiences.
