The Skin Imps [+]

Saurday 5th January 2013

Free Entry Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Collectively known as The Skin Imps, these three individuals – whom I shall introduce presently – have blazed a trail for many years, but have largely remained in the shadows, honing their skills in preparation for the coming apocalypse, ready to strike from a secret encampment on the bordertowns of society at a moments notice.

That moment is now!

Guided by the voice of God (Lee Majors), they have made it their sacred quest to reintroduce the world to their forgotten childhood, by assaulting them with powerful, mesmerising, dirty and sexual versions of Jamie and the Magic Torch, The Littlest Hobo, Thundercats and many other classic themes from 1980s television. This is their fight, their calling, their honour.

The Reads [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

A band of friends who like to make music which some people (them) have termed ‘ambient-electro-folk-rock’ traversing the pubs and clubs of North Wales, Chester, Liverpool and Manchester… or at home with a cuppa, watching the telly-box
formed somewhere between 1963 and the year 3000. Drawing on influences from the last century, they write music that will be relevant for another millennium, at least
Why? “It is written”
On the whole, enjoying the ride thank you, although Jamie’s still got that tickly cough… Marcy could do with a bit more sleep… Beno could do with losing some weight… Clare’s almost out of ink… and Matty, well, you know what Matty’s like…..

Description…

Who are the reads? What are the reads? Where are the reads? When are the reads? Why are the reads? How are the reads?
These are just some of the questions which remain unanswered about this elusive 5-piece… primarily for the reason that they’ve never been asked.
We look to put all of that right, making this a one-stop-shop for all of your reads needs.

Richie Syrett with support The Daymons [+]

Thursday 17th January – Free Entry

“Richie Syrett makes his Telfords debut on January 17th 2013, bringing his graceful, melancholy, widescreen Americana down the M56 from his Manchester home. An amazing singer with memorable melodies and a killer band. Don’t miss this!” www.richiesyrett.com

“Woah, the man sails – talent ahoy! Employing the sparse, reverbed sound that only great singers such as early Elvis, Chris Isaacs and Jeff Buckley have used, Mancunian Richie gets away with it. Totally worth checking out!” Rhythm Magazine

The Daymons

Formed in 2012, the daymons grew from a renewed partnership between Chester based singer-songwriters Guy Bengree and Tim Chapman. Tim and Guy were quickly joined by Richard Bratt, another singing, song writing guitarist, and trumpet player “Magic” Jim Donaldson.

Initially working as a four piece acoustic act whilst writing a fresh batch of songs, the band expanded into the finished line up in the summer with the addition of Fran Martinez on bass guitar and Rich Goss on drums.

High-quality song writing, coupled with a unique blend of voices and a mix of acoustic, electric guitars and trumpet have built the band a strong reputation locally following appearances at Chester’s Northgate Festival and Music Earth Rise events.

Described by audiences as a fusion of Indie/Folk/Rock or “Rolkie” the band continue to write as a six piece, with a pop sensibility and no fear of a big, catchy chorus.

An EP is planned for early 2013.

DAVE SHARP (THE ALARM) SOLO SHOW [+]

Thursday 24th January – Free Entry

1989 saw the US release coast-to-coast hit album, Change, and #1 AOR single, ‘Sold Me Down the River’, from British rock band, The Alarm. Sadly, 1991 saw the surprise departure of the band’s lead singer…

Dave Sharp, co-founder of The Alarm had that previous year enlisted the help of legendary maverick record producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Willie Nelson & Leonard Cohen) to help cut his first solo record. It was a determined young man who walked through the doors at The Hit Factory NYC in December 1990, and in under a week Sharp’s album Hard Travlin’ had been recorded, mixed and delivered for release to IRS Records.

A relentless two-year period of Stateside touring followed including appearances at Farm Aid concerts and Earth Day celebrations before Sharp returned to New York City in 1992 to perform for an audience of 25,000 gathered in Central Park to celebrate the 80th birthday of folk legend Woody Guthrie. It was a seminal event for Dave Sharp who performed alongside Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Billy Bragg and shared the stage with The Right Reverend Jessie Jackson.

In 1996 Sharp once again teamed up with producer Bob Johnston entering Credence Clearwater Revival’s studio in San Francisco to record and release his second solo album, Downtown America. Two underground hits followed, ‘The Ghost of Preacher Casey’ and ‘Give Me Back My Job’, which both received healthy rotation across the board at American radio and led to television appearances on country music’s Nashville Network.

Sharp returned to the UK in 2002 to record his third solo album, The Power of Soul, released on Manchester’s Townsend Records, successfully re-introducing him to British audiences and earning him solo recognition across the UK with British music critics.

Dave Sharp’s solo albums have received positive critical recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and over the past decade and a half Sharp has been fortunate to work alongside many of the artists he has long respected. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash have appeared on his recordings. He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner. Whether solo or with a band, guitar in hand, Dave Sharp delivers the ”Spirit of Rock & Roll.”

His music has been described as everything from folk and blues to rock, country and punk; his performances as everything from legendary to lousy. However one word can never be used to describe Dave Sharp: ”Predictable.”

Dave Sharp has embraced mainstream popular culture whilst at the same time remaining one step away from its grasp . . . he likes it that way!

‘It’s a Mighty Hard Road to be Travlin’ Down.’ Dave Sharp writes it, sings it and lives it.

Society [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

“Lovely country-rock melodies, wonderful three-part harmonies”

Acoustic magazine

Following on from their hugely successful release ‘SONGS FROM THE BRICKHOUSE’, Society are back with ‘A CROOKED MILE’. This stunning new release is guaranteed to bring the trio even more praise from media and audiences alike. For those that don’t know Society are a three piece country rock band from West Sussex who specialise in gorgeous three part harmonies that set them apart from the current crop of Americana or country rock wanabees in the UK. The band comprise guitarist Matt Wise, bassist Ben Lancaster and holding down the beat, F.Scott Kenny on drums. Their recorded and live sound has echoes of C.S.N.Y, The Band, The Heartbreakers, The Jayhawks, Wilco ,The Rolling Stones  and the late great Ronnie Lane and Slim Chance. Matt Wise composes most if not all of their material and when all three sing in harmony the result is simply stunning, this shown perfectly at the 2011 Maverick Festival where they had the audience spellbound listening to their live performance.

Since forming in 2004 Society have supported many great artistes including Eve Selis, Deadstring Brothers, Corb Lund, Luke Doucet and The Wailin’ Jennys. Apart from their own UK headline shows, Society have completed two tours of Canada along with a string of dates in the American mid-west gaining a whole new legion of fans in the USA.

This constant touring has honed both their musical and vocal chops and in the summer of 2011 Society returned to the studio to produce ‘A CROOKED MILE’, recorded both at the Brickhouse Studios near Brighton and the bands own Downland Studios located near Gatwick. Matt Wise was in the producers’ chair, ably assisted by engineer James Gasson.

The album is once again a collection of eleven original songs from the pen of Matt Wise and arranged by all three band members. Guest musicians featured on the album include once again Spencer Cullum (Caitlin Rose, Deadstring Brothers) who is one of the foremost young pedal steel players around today, Ben Davies and James Batchelar on keyboards, Pat Kenneally on melodica/piano and added pedal steel is supplied by Chris Pritchard.

The songs on ‘A CROOKED MILE’ once again echo their love and passion for all things West Coast USA, Laurel Canyon and the great country rock music produced in the late 1960s/early 70s, yet their sound is brought into the 21st century with a distinctly indie feel. Stand out tracks include 40 Days, a stunning and anthemic crowd pleaser, Blues Flag, reminiscent of The Band at their finest, the bluegrass influenced Davey and the perfect opening track Wheels A’ Turning, country rock at its very best.

2011 saw BOB HARRIS spinning songs from  ‘A CROOKED MILE’ on both his BBC RADIO 2 shows with the band also being playlisted on BBC Radio Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with Society finishing up the year playing shows in Europe where they took in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and The Netherlands with Kurt Marschke performing as both Society and Deadstring Brothers

2012 will see further performances from Society to support the release and success of ‘A CROOKED MILE’ with the band confirmed for festival appearances and a BOB HARRIS BBC RADIO 2 session scheduled for June.

John Fairhurst with support The Glendale Family [+]

Saturday 26th January

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

A molotov cocktail of frantic finger fits and gravel dragged vocals that’s sure to knock you out with its heavy, flailing backside as it crashes past the finish line and keeps on running.

Described as “Possibly the finest guitarist you’ll ever see” – (Chris Long BBC) with “All the slide guitars skills of Robert Johnson” – (Electric Ghost), John Fairhurst and his Band are rapidly gaining the reputation as the hardest working, most musically diverse and utterly stand out Rock and Roll Blues Band on the scene. After 2 critically acclaimed albums, ‘Joys of Spring’ (2008) (“Truly Exquisite” – The Guardian), ‘Band’ (2010) and 10 years playing as a solo artist all over the world including Asia, America,Canada, Australia and Europe, John has expanded the line up into a weighty and heavy-hitting three piece outfit of incendiary electric guitar lines, deep blues bottleneck grooves and trance-inducing, hip-shaking, foot-stomping rhythms. Having met Simon Lovelock (Bass) in Australia eight years ago, where they spent months living in a tent and then years playing together, an unbreakable brotherly bond in music was forged. Completing the line up is James Breen on Drums, Bonham-esque powerhouse and rock steady long term rhythm partner to Simon.

The John Fairhurst Band exploded on to the UK circuit this year, playing nearly 50 festival shows including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Sunrise Celebration and Shambala to name but a few and over 100 packed out gigs across the UK and Ireland. At Greenman in Chai Wallahs, they “…filled a tent in a sunshine drenched field quicker than any festival act has done for a long time. The bluesman’s insatiable guitar work finely turned a crowd of a curious onlookers into a sea of dancing, sweaty bodies.” – (Gareth Main – Bearded Magazine) John Fairhurst truly epitomises the modern day wandering blues man. Stories of hunger, listlessness, roaming and reckless abandon are just a prelude to John’s story, something that can only be fully understood in the presence of the man.

John’s enigmatic tales relayed through intense and original blues are all told using his trademark howling vocals; think Captain Beefheart meets Tom Waits and Son House. When John Fairhurst walks onto a stage you know you are not only about to hear incredible music, but the tale of a tireless journey leaving a lasting impression wherever he stops (which is nowhere for very long!). With a bottle-neck style referencing the likes of Son House and Bukka White, comparisons to the fingerpicking of John Fahey, a heavy leaning towards the 60’s rock of Hendrix and Led Zepplin, plus the ever present influence of K. Sridhar (Indian Sarod master and mentor to John since childhood), John’s music is a real melting-pot of diverse musical traditions.

“Newcomers to John Fairhurst certainly won’t be forgetting his name in a hurry.” (Manchester Music) A new record is currently in production. Festival and tour bookings in the UK, Ireland, Europe, America and Russia are coming in thick and fast. 2012 promises to be a huge year for the John Fairhurst Band. Get on Board. This train is rolling!
