Free Entry

Folk, Roots and Blues provided by Mark Henderson & Co. on Telford’s intimate Window Stage. See some of the best acoustic acts from the Northwest up close and personal. This month we feature David Burton & Jessica Ball…

David Burton & Jessica Ball 1

As a duo, David and Jessica have performed numerous gigs, including private parties, New years celebrations, and weddings throughout North Wales and Cheshire. They provide entertainment for all venues and functions from their varied repertoire of covers and also write and record their own material. Their repertoire spans from 50’s rock and roll to modern pop encompassing classic rock, country blues and indie in between.

Jessica Ball – Guitar/Vocals

Born in North Wales and having grown up in South Africa, Jessica’s music career started in 2006 where she attended the National School of Arts in Johannesburg, studying Contemporary Music. In 2010, she arrived back in Wales to pursue her singing career. Since then, Jessica’s original music has received national radio airplay and media coverage as a solo artist and as part of her band, Warsisters. She has appeared twice at Focus Wales festival and performs gigs regularly throughout Wales and England. Jessica is also a renowned guitar tutor, providing lessons in the North Wales area.

David Burton – Guitar/Vocals

Hailing from North Wales, David Burton is an accomplished songwriter and instrumentalist who has composed many thought-provoking and foot tapping songs. He has performed live up and down the country both solo and with his previous band, The Invisible Wires, for over ten years supporting fine artists such as Eric Roche and also playing backup guitar for numerous talented singer songwriters including a stint with Duffy. His virtuoso guitar skills leave audiences open-mouthed as he performs his own compositions whilst also playing tribute to the work of acoustic guitar heroes such as John Renbourn, Bert Jansch and Pierre Bensusan.

Chubby Knuckles presents… Extra Love [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Extra Love are a ten-piece band from Manchester who throw a variety of spices into the Reggae/Dub pot; creating their own distinctive and very danceable flavour. With big vibes, grooves to make you move your waist line, and deep bass that rolls all the way down your spine…this band is in it’s natural habitat when mashing up dancefloors all over the land. Expect equal helpings of conscious music and un self-conscious dancing at an Extra Love gig…
With a formidable rhythm section laying down a foundation that’s as much influenced by the funky sounds of Afrobeat as it is the sounds of Reggae and Dancehall, skanks and soundscape pranks from the guitar and keys and powerful, vital lines from the trio of jazzy hornsmen, two charismatic vocalists complete the line up. Kuntri Ranks (aka. The Lion King) is a respected Reggae veteran, who has previously had to fill the rather large boots of Prince Far I with the pioneering ‘world’ music group Sons Of Arqa. The Greek ying to Mr.Ranks’ Jamaican yang is Angelos Gavriilidis; a melodic and passionate singer / lyricist whose vast musical output encompasses everything from acoustic singer/songwiter ditties to downright filthy Techno productions.
The musicians in the band are young but surprisingly experienced professionals; what they lack in wrinkles and mortgage commitments they certainly do not lack in passion! Each individual regularly performs in a myriad of styles and other projects. All of these influences rub shoulders when the band kick out the jams, creating the progressive Extra Love sound. A sound which is steeped in but refuses to be solely confined to the ‘Reggae ting’.
Extra Love and its members have shared the stage with top international artists such as Afrikan Simba, Top Cat, Channel One, The Beat, Rico Rodriguez (The Specials), Craig Charles, Ariya Astrabeat Arkestra, Kenny Knotts, Finley Quaye, Gentlemen’s Dub Club, The Undertones, Beats and Pieces and many more. The band can often be found spreading the love vibrations on the festival scene as well as appearing regularly at venues and clubs across their native North West and beyond. The band have also recently launched their own night in Manchester, inviting top similar-minded bands and DJ’s to join the party…and what a party it’s turning out to be! The band are currently looking to bring the party to the international stage, everywhere can use more love…

Everything Is Now presents… The Quangos [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

The Quangos

Inspired by the iconic and revolutionary music from the era of Sam & Dave, Ray Charles and The Spencer Davis group, The Quangos perform songs which send their sell-out crowds into dancing and singing reminiscent of a time when that’s what music was about.

Fronted by the enigmatic soul voiced ‘Josh Goddard’, the hotly tipped ‘Quangos’ write and perform songs which are both strikingly inventive and leave the listener humming the chorus on the night bus home. “Crammed with needle-sharp hooks and delivered with a breathless intensity, it is lifted beyond retro fetishism by its sheer youthful exuberance and singer Goddard’s raspy croon.” The Manchester Evening News

The song writing team of Phil Nixon and Josh Goddard pen hook laden songs which inspire references to such seminal bands as ‘The La’s, ‘The Coral’, ‘The Spencer Davis Group’ & ‘Traffic’. The Quangos line up is perfectly complemented by the bass playing talents of Drew Palmer and the sticksmanship of Scot Parkinson.

Touring incessantly around the UK & Europe including appearances at the ‘Beached Festival’ in Manchester, ‘Secret Garden’ festival this forthcoming summer, their residency at the renown ‘Cavern Club’ and appearances in Switzerland, France and Germany as well as recently headlining the BBC Introducing night in Manchester. The Quangos are fast becoming a finely honed live act and one of THE acts to see live.

If you miss the time when the mechanics of a song came from the soul of the songwriter, then get yourself down to see The Quangos.

“Do not allow yourself to be fooled by the name; this is no quasi non-governmental organisation. They are Manchester’s rising star.” The Times

Blow Out presents… The Nightporters [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

The-Nightporters

THE NIGHTPORTERS, one of the wildest and most popular touring Rockin’ Rhythm & Blues acts of the past 20 years are proud and excited to announce their return to the European music scene.

The original, classic line-up will come together between July and September 2013 to perform a 30 date European tour. It’s been over 10 years since the band toured, so this is one show you definitely do not want to miss!

The band will feature the four original band members:
Ian Roberts … Vocals / Guitar / Harmonica
Martin Vowles … Guitar / Backing Vocals
Chris Robbins-Davey … Double Bass
Kevin Crowe … Drums / Backing Vocals

The Nightporters are credited as being one of the finest bands to have performed on the International roots and blues circuit. Their shows have become legendary throughout Europe and for their army of fans, The Nightporters were certainly a “never miss” band whenever they hit town.

Originally formed in 1993 in deepest South Devon, all four members of the band came together through a mutual love of Blues, 1950s Americana and British Rhythm & Blues. Like most British kids of the same age, they had grown up listening to Ska / Two-Tone, early 80s Rockabilly stuff and good time Punk Rock, these inlfuences undoubtedly gave the band their unique, power-packed, swing-boogie sound. They released two widely acclaimed albums on Indigo Records, made innumerable appearances in clubs and concert halls in over 25 countries, national radio and T.V. and at just about every major European blues festival. They had also built a huge fan-base through their relentless commitment to touring and above all ENTERTAINING their audiences. In 2002, much to the shock of their fans, the band unexpectedly split after a successful Canadian tour and while still at the height of their popularity.

2013 will mark 20 years since the band formed and all four members are looking forward to stunning audiences with their trademark high-energy, rockin’ show once more. This will not be a rushed, under-rehearsed approximation of the great band of a decade ago, this will be the real thing; a tight, kick-ass rock’n’roll machine, firing on all cylinders and hungry for a new audience!

Today, just as before, The Nightporters mix elements of Blues, R & B, Rock-a-Billy and whatever else they need to create a contemporary, exciting and danceable sound. They deliver unique interpretations of carefully selected numbers and perfectly crafted original tunes that, as one major blues publication put it, “…are as good as the blues masters”.

Still known for their sharp suits, valve-rattling guitars and showmanship to rival any of the great rhythm & blues acts, this English 4-piece are an electrifying ball of energy from the moment they hit the stage. The Nightporters are a band that instinctively understands their audience and knows how to make them feel good!

Since the band split in 2002, each member of the band has been busy recording and touring with some the finest acts on the Blues, Rockabilly and Roots scene including The Wildcards, Becca Langsford, The Big Town Playboys, Linda Gail Lewis and many, many more.

So, dust off your dancing shoes and get ready for a night of wild, reckless, Rhythm’n’Blues abandon! The boys are back, and in the words of the great song, “You got the old time boogie, and the new one too, but don’t nobody boogie, like The Nightporters do!”.

The Loose Kites [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Theloosekites2013

Imagine if you will a band. Not just any ordinary band, but a band cut from a different cloth.

A band with soul, whose sole mission is to infect the planet with love, with passion and with music to make you smile and make you think. Imagine, if you can, the loose kites.

Imagine the scene. A basement, somewhere in the 1920s. Sharp suits and flapper dressers abound, and drinks are flowing as far as the eye can see. The vibe is relaxed, sure, but there is expectation in the air. Something special, something monumental is about to happen. The sounds rise from nothing, and soon the room is filled with joyful noise as the kites enter the stage.

The lights go up, and the crowd is immediately in rapture. Right from the slow, sleazy, smoky opening, singer and musicians are as one, and the crowd are drawn in from the off.

Soon things are moving at a pace, as the band move through their repertoire with an assured feel, showcasing why they have garnered such an attentive following over the past few years. Having added three new members in recent times, the kites are set fair to continue with the sounds that their fans love so much, but adding new dimensions to their unique style. Those added elements – including strings and horns, make the distinctive kites sound a fuller, and more dynamic one. That sound still accentuates the positive, with the focus still very much on the groove, and the catchiness of the tunes.

And now the kites are back doing what they do best, setting the Telfords stage on fire. They are looking forward to presenting the new album, ‘…Of Bricks And Brambles’, which will be available as an exclusive pre-release at the launch. The gig promises to be something very special, with wine, women and song all night. The band will be premiering new videos which are set to be issued alongside the forthcoming singles from the long-awaited album.

The loose kites mix a strong sense of local tradition with an international outlook. Their music is good-time-low-down-good-fun, delivered within a timeless setting, of emotion and soulfulness. Make sure you are at the album launch, and are ready to dance and sing your heart out.

Beach Skulls with support The Kindest Of Thieves [+]

Friday 16th August – Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Plus DJ Ono

Beach Skulls 1

Channeling influences from Dick Dale to soul pioneer Sam Cooke, they have managed to create a sound that is both contemporary and nostalgic. Based in Liverpool, UK, Jordan Finney and Ryan Jackson have their fingers on the pulse of classic surf rock. Though not particularly as sunny as the Beach Boys, they have coined a certain surf-rock melancholy that’s proven perfect for easy summertime listening. Laced in a sea of vintage reverb and easy drums, there is a genius simplicity to their music. Nothing extremely intricate, but this band knows exactly where to put things to make a good song work.

Kindest Of Theives

Just who are Kindest of Thieves…….within a relatively short lifetime, conflicting incarnations manifested, chief thief Chris Fox developing an almost rockabilly Morrissey persona in August last year, suave and sophisticated, vocals delivered with precision accompanied by lyrically perspicacious themes for his “Serial Mothers and Terminal Hunchbacks” EP.

Never one to rest on laurels, Fox revealed darker edges in December, abducting drummer Sam Lightfoot, dragging him kicking and screaming from Warrington sunlight into a dank, desolate dungeon surrounded by instruments of torture, chained callously behind kit. Here, Chris bared his deepest, darkest fantastical thoughts, formulating a selection of chillingly macabre songs, the lo-fi production only adding to the ominous sense of foreboding, perversely thrusting upon an unsuspecting public immediately prior the festive period the “Ladies and Gentlemen, My Sweetheart The Lonely. ” EP. A delightfully twisted Black Christmas ensued.

And so to 2013…..curiously, Lightfoot, rather than repelled by his experience, developing Stockholm Syndrome, a kinship evolves with tormentor, currently foisting themselves onto the North West live circuit to much acclaim. What’s next………who knows……possibly not even Fox and Lightfoot, such the ability of re-invention. One thing’s for sure, whatever the future brings it can only prove the most enthralling and beguiling of rides…..grab your ticket, hold tight, you might just find you love every single minute.

Open Mic Session – Irish Special with Rusty Mahone [+]

Free Entry

Sunday 25th August sees the Telfords Warehouse bank holiday open mic featuring the Kerrygold Band with Rusty Mahone as referee and host.

The Kerrygold band are a fluid collective set with rennet, and like their singing relative Connie Lingus, neither is strictly suitable for vegetarians.

Rusty plays the accordion and has bad dress sense. His last dress was simply appalling and just didn’t suit him at all.

Being serious, The Kerrygolds bring us a rapskallion infusion of all that was good about Irish Music in English ‘Irish Theme’ pubs early this century. They sing of Rovers, of wanderers, beer, whisky, sex, extra marital affairs and Rovers. Rovers are important, even though nobody quite knows what one is. They dare to flirt with controversy too, and when feeling particularly truculent have been known to sing ‘The Fields of Athenry’ which appeared in a Daily Mail top ten of rebel songs. Dangerous stuff.

Members of the band are well versed in Irish culture, having been to Dublin a few times on the ferry, and some of them have eaten curry cooked by one of the Dubliners. Saint Daniel O’Donnel was once heard to remark

“The Kerrgolds? Don’t they make Cheese?”

Yes Daniel they do, but at least it’s not soapy mild cheddar!

There is an Irish theme to the night just in case you hadn’t noticed. Expect green lights and Guinness. Any performers making an effort with Irish material will be rewarded with a taste of Rusty’s Champ that is maturing under his allotment hedge ready for the evening.

They won’t woo you with choreography and production, they will seduce you with raw guitar, animal drums and throbbing bass. They play ‘The Who’, and you understand why Townsend smashed his guitar. Live Blues outfit from Chester featuring the vocals of the gritty down and dirty Charlie Goodfella joined by a smattering of drums, a hankering of Hammond, a tinkling of ivory a blast of brass and a thrumming of guitar and bass… I don’t know where all these units of measuring are coming from… but who cares its all about the music.

These guys are reknowned for their rousing beerhall renditions and of classic and contemporary blues with a bit of Creedence thrown in for good measure.  I’m off to the bar, see you on the dancefloor!
