REPENT feat. CATFISH & THE BOTTLEMEN [+]

£5 TICKETS

gigantic

4 piece rock band Catfish And The Bottlemen will release their new single ‘Rango’ through Communion Records on September 16, 2013. The ATC-managed band have been asked to play the BBC Introducing Stage (previously selected artists include Daughter and Rizzle Kicks) at this year’s Reading and Leeds Festival, on August 24 and 25respectively, and will follow this up with nationwide tour dates throughout September and October.

‘Rango’ is the follow up to Catfish and The Bottlemen’s debut single ‘Homesick’, released through Communion Records in June to radio support from Radio 1 (Zane Lowe ‘Next Hype’, Huw Stephens, Phil & Alice), 6Music (Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne) and a playlist from XFM, whose John Kennedy described the band as “stadium ready”.  ‘Rango’ has already started out of the blocks as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record in the World this week.  Written by frontman Van McCann about the band’s struggles to escape from the humdrum of life in their hometown of Llandudno, North Wales, ‘Rango’ is possessed of a suitably ragged urgency, all arcing guitars and the shredded vocals of McCann. Speaking about the track he says, “I wrote ‘Rango’ about my first real girlfriend just after we split up, in some attempt to win her back I guess. It’s just about how our shitty small town wore us out together a bit. Everyone knowing our business, and wanting to be involved in it a bit more than we did.”

Catfish And The Bottlemen signed to Communion Records (Ben Howard, Michael Kiwanuka, Deap Vally, Half Moon Run) this Spring, following a furious 18 month period which saw them play over 150 live shows in the UK and abroad to hone their incredibly tight live set, which invariably sees frontman Van McCann climbing the walls and playing guitar as though his life depended on it, whilst fans crowd surf and sing every word.  Having played club nights for Carl Barat & 6Music’s Chris Hawkins, and persuaded the likes of The Vaccines to attend their gigs, the band then went into the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales with Communion co-founder Ian Grimble (British Sea Power, Daughter) to record their debut material.

Deaf School

Deaf School are an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1973. Between 1976 and 1978 they recorded three albums for the Warner Brothers label, in an art rock style that had its roots in cabaret, moving towards a harder punk rock sound. The band split in 1978 but have since been recognized as an important influence on many British musicians. According to Frankie Goes To Hollywood singer Holly Johnson: “They revived Liverpool music for a generation.” The journalist, author and founder of Mojo, Paul Du Noyer, went further: “In the whole history of Liverpool music two bands matter most, one is The Beatles and the other is Deaf School.” Nearly all its members went on to enjoy successful careers afterwards, notably guitarist Clive Langer, who would produce Madness and Dexys Midnight Runners (two non-Liverpool acts who cite Deaf School as an influence). He would also co-write (with Elvis Costello) the song ‘Shipbuilding’. Clive Langer and Elvis Costello discuss the writing of Shipbuilding in a BBC Radio 4 programme, Soul Music, first broadcast March 2013.

She is more than just a folk singer/songwriter, producing music that possesses great depth and multiple dimensions, and which addresses both the everyday and the surreal and abstract.
‘In years to come, I’ll look back at the records I’ve made and not have any regrets about a man in a suit making me fit in with fashion. They’re small, sketchy pieces. I’m not trying to make Big Art.’

Wilson Minds

“So whose Wilson Minds?”…

Wilson Minds are a new three piece alt-rock band from northwest England. Lead by singer, guitarist and songwriter Paul Wilkes, who describes their sound as “modern bluesy dark rock n roll, with a little twist of Americana.” The classy rhythm section is made up by James Brogan (bass /vocals) and Carl Brightman (drums).

The band have spent a very short time launching their explosive alt rock assault on the scene, and now have some exciting recording sessions with legendary producer Chris Potter (Verve, Blur, I Am Kloot) who fell in love with Paul’s demos. These are salt of the earth kinda guys with no big attitudes, just playing boss tunes, whose influences go from Neil Young and Crazy Horse through to The White Stripes and beyond. ”I’m a scouser, Carls from Manchester, and James is from Winsford” says Paul “so between us we represent the whole of the North West, even though we sound like a seventies American rock band! It took me a long time to find two like minded lads and we’ve gelled together brilliantly”

With some exciting songs & recordings in the pipeline, 2013 sees the beginning of a band that could have been gracing your record players back in the seventies, but will now grace your smart phones and iPads instead. Stay tuned…

Blow Out presents… Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Whilst relentlessly peddling their peculiar brand of Lyric-Driven Dirt-Swing™ (an incomparable rendering of jive-smitten cabaret blues) Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six have captured the imaginations of every species of listenership – both at home and overseas.

Louis Barabbas 1

Since forming in late 2006 their music has infiltrated almost every creative niche, being adapted into animated short films, burlesque routines, musical theatre, fringe festival revues, documentary soundtracks, motion picture scores and even a comic strip.

Over the years they have won praise and support from the likes of Supergrass, The Mighty Boosh, Har Mar Superstar, UB40, Mark Steel, The Hell’s Angels, BBC Radio and even the Beat Poet biographer Barry Miles – both for their furious onstage energy and Louis’ manic lyrical gymnastics.

Their infamous live shows – incorporating rock, jazz, folk and theatre influences – have proved time and time again that the group is at home on any line-up, even sharing the bill with such disparate acts as Motorhead, Sun Ra’s Arkestra, I Am Kloot, Eliza Carthy, The Blockheads, Emmanuel Jal and The Buzzcocks. In the last year alone they have toured Europe, the States and Mexico, inspiring stage invasions, dancing in the aisles and a confused mixture of exhaustion and bonhomie wherever they go.

They are signed to co-operative Manchester-based label Debt Records.
