Everything Is Now presents… Gabby Young & Other Animals [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Gabby Young’s twisting roots have carried her and that stunning voice from her native Wiltshire around the UK to land with a bang at the centre of London’s music scene. The youngest ever recruit to the National Youth Choir at the age of 12, Gabby was on track to become an opera singer until Jeff Buckley and the jazz greats inspired her to switch teams. ‘My family was equestrian and sporty, but I liked being by myself – a bit of a recluse, really. Still, I did all the styles from goth to hippy to punk.’

Whilst still in her teens Gabby frequented open mic nights and played with a spectrum of bands before recording her first solo record in her bedroom before she turned 21. Gabby’s unique perspective of the world around her is inspired as much by imagination as real events, but whenthyroid cancer threatened to take her classically trained voice at the age of 22, she got serious about recording her stories. Using her recovery time to pen her melodies, Gabby took in global influences to fuel her heartfelt emotion which shines through her beautifully haunting songs. ‘I feel blessed rather than afflicted,’ she says simply.

Gabby promoted gigs at and built up audience at the Ear Music nights at Monkey Chews, the infamous Kentish Town pub where she met drummer and guitarist (and beau) Stephen Ellis. In 2008 Gabby formed the 8-piece band who complete the magical musical fairground we know today, using a wide range of instruments, most notably trumpet, trombone, piano and clarinet. Young’s avant-garde fusion of globally-influenced folk combines Balkan brass, jazz and swing in an aural antiques shop from the future to produce what has been affectionately dubbed Circus Swing by those who realised there was no existing genre to encompass Young’s sound. Open Mic Session with Andy Hickie + feature artist Little Arrow [+]

Free Entry

Open mic tonight hosted by Andy Hickie. Slots available from 8pm. Just find this hairy beast to get your name on the list…Andy Hickie 1

We also feature Welsh band Little Arrow

Hailing from St Davids, Little Arrow make bitter sweet nu folk to heal the weary soul. Like a Fairport Convention from Venus, or a Laura Marling from Mars their mix of otherworldly melodies is as infectious and surreal as it is unique. Forget the Camden Crawl – the finest acoustic music you’ll hear this year comes courtesy of the ancient drovers routes and Saints of Wales.

After finishing Cardiff band Fredrick Stanley Star, William spent much of 2010 in the wilderness of West Wales where, inspired by his surroundings, he continuously wrote and recorded songs with friends and family members. The result is this rich and enchanting sound, which exhibits an accomplished, enigmatic artist at work.

The bands first album, ‘Music, Masks & Poems’ was released in 2011 and their brand new album ‘Wild Wishes’ is available from March 4th, 2013.

“Superb” – THE TIMES
“His guitar playing is a fire hazard” – MOJO

When explosive natural ability collides with fiery, emotionally charged compositions, the result is Aynsley Lister; an incredible guitarist whose brand of blues-based rock delivers contemporary song writing fueled with the kind of heart and soul that’s missing from so much modern music.  Whether passionately writing and recording his own material or mesmerising audiences at his live shows one thing is abundantly clear: music is hard-wired to his DNA and flows from his fingertips like sonic bolts of lightning.  With over 86,000 albums sold, lashings of critical acclaim and years of high profile touring, Lister’s resumé speaks for itself and firmly secures his position as a leading light in the resurgence of British blues-infused music.

In hindsight, it’s clear Aynsley was born to be a musician.  As a child he was hypnotised by his dad’s old guitar and at the age of eight was finally gifted his very own.  The moment he held that first six-string the outcome was inevitable; he was going to be a guitarist.  Blessed with the coolest dad in town, regularly spinning Hendrix, Cream, Fleetwood Mac and a whole host of bewitching blues for his spellbound son, Aynsley taught himself to play with relentless dedication and a precociously attuned ear, spending hours copying his favourite records note for note.  Peter Green, Albert King, Clapton and Kossoff weren’t just his heroes; they became his teachers.

Blazing a trail in a bar band from the age of 13 honed his skills.  By 18 he’d started singing and had also formed his first group, during which time he landed a dream support slot with Buddy Guy and released two low key CD’s featuring his earliest original material.  In 1998 those self-penned titles caught the attention of Ruf Records owner Thomas Ruf, who immediately signed Aynsley and hooked him up with Stevie Ray Vaughan’s producer Jim Gaines.  With a maturity that belied his years, the self titled debut announced Aynsley Lister as a major new talent and kicked off a successful relationship with Ruf Records, releasing 7 albums and 2 DVD’s in ten years.  Their influence, coupled with his dynamite live shows and intense touring schedule, earned high profile support slots with established artists like Walter Trout, John Mayall and Robert Cray, whilst rousing festival appearances alongside artists like the Fun Lovin’ Criminals cemented his standing as an artist whose work, although rooted in blues, transcended the genre with a fiery modern sound that was eagerly embraced by fans of rock, pop, soul and acoustic music alike.  In 2007 Aynsley was the only British artist to be named in Classic Rock magazine’s “Top 10 Contemporary Blues Artists”, alongside John Mayer, Derek Trucks and Joe Bonamassa.

In 2008 Aynsley’s huge crossover potential saw him sign to Manhaton Records, where he released the best two albums of his career to date.  Produced by Steve Darrel Smith and featuring Paul McCartney guitarist Robbie Macintosh, 2009’s ‘Equilibrium’ exposed Lister in his best ever form, throwing all his musical influences into a delicious melting pot that delivered sultry melodies, full throttle hard rock riffage and introspective ballads.  ‘Equilibrium’ received fantastic reviews and  stormed into Classic Rock’s Top 50 Albums of 2009.  The subsequent tour saw Aynsley playing to sold out shows to over 16,000 people whilst opening for the legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd, after which he and his band relocated to the Tower Arts Centre and with the tape rolling, nailed a cracking rendition of their high-octane live set to produce the storming ‘Tower Sessions’ record, which was consequently voted ‘Best Live Album’ in the 2011 Blues Matters Writers Poll.

With his stock firmly in the ascendancy Aynsley is currently hard at work on his next record, intent on creating the finest album of his career.  He’s wisely chosen to refine the material the best way he knows how; by playing it live.  “When you record songs in the studio and then go out and tour, they evolve and take on a life of their own.  I want to capture that on the new record and want a whole album of songs that translate to the live setting as well as being well written enough to engage the listener of an album”.  The eagerly anticipated new material, slated for release in early 2013, will be distributed on his manager’s label as he’s sagely decided to take control of his career by bringing everything in-house, following other successful artists who’ve cut out the record companies with astonishing results.  Needless to say, a tour in support of that album will surely follow, and that promises to be something special, not just for the fans, but for the main man himself:

“Music is a release for me.  When I play I get lost in it and it’s a very happy place to be”  – Aynsley Lister

Free Entry

Open Mic as usual but with special guest host Hanami. They will be around from 8pm to organise the running order and will play a feature slot part way through to coinced with their latest album release. Read a bit more about them below…

maincover

Hanami is a duo born from the necessity to keep their gypsy souls
alive whilst celebrating street music as a protest against an
unsatisfying and wasteful society. Their love of nature and music
combines in the title of their debut studio album ‘Philomelos” due to
be released in November through Smugglers Records. “Philomelos”
comes from the ancient Greek tongue and means song loving, by
way of a song bird.
As part of the album’s release in November, Hanami will hit the road
throughout England and France to perform at all their favourite
venues. In the spring of 2014 Hanami will also return to mainland
Europe in search of new street corners and music lovers.
Their strange and enchanting combination of psychedelic folk,
acoustic guitar and marching drum, along with male/ female
harmonies has kept audiences hooked in cities across Europe for the
past three years. Living the life of the busker has given obvious
strength to their vocals and helped them to build a captivated
audience. Chanted protests, jingle jangle crooners and eerie folk
tales of the road come together in a colourful explosion on this rare
debut and are sure to stand the test of time.

Indigo Sky

Indigo Sky have been officially going since September 2011 when we got into a studio and recorded our 1st EP. Over the first year we had tried to push into the cities around us such as Chester, Manchester and Liverpool. We succeeded and managed to work our way through the Surface Unsigned Festival in the Northern region which lead us to play venues such as Jabez Clegg, Dry Live and Academy 3 in Manchester. Out of the 200+ bands that entered in our region we managed to come 8th and just missed out on going to the international showcase.

Whilst in Surface Festival we were also in the middle of recording where the songs kept coming, in the end the project turned into an album! It has taken almost a year in completion and is now available (Since 13/12/12).

In 2013 we recruited a new guitarist and we’re looking forward to a busy year of shows and new music!

Blow Out presents… Blackbeards Tea Party [+]

Friday 22nd November

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Blackbeards Tea Party

Playing together since summer 2009, Blackbeard’s Tea Party began as a busking, function and ceilidh band, but quickly grew a reputation as a formidable live act. They soon found themselves selling out venues in their home town of York.

Word quickly spread, and the band began to play gigs further afield, including a number of noteworthy festival concerts and ceilidh bookings through 2010 and 2011. These included Sidmouth, Shrewsbury and a headline slot at Galtres, amongst others.During this time, Blackbeard’s Tea Party released an EP (Heavens to Betsy, 2009) and a full length album (Tomorrow We’ll Be Sober, 2011) to excellent critical acclaim and public response. Both were recorded in Kajunga Studios (a series of progressively bigger bedrooms) and were funded and distributed independently. After the release of Heavens to Betsy the band’s distinct sound was picked up by the BBC’s Mike Harding, who played Blackbeard’s Tea Party on BBC Radio 2’s weekly folk show.

Since the release of Tomorrow We’ll Be Sober – which R2 Magazine gave a five star rating – Blackbeard’s Tea Party have gone from strength to strength. They were recognised as one of the best live bands in the UK in the 2011 FATEA Awards and 2012 saw a long run of festival bookings, including Cambridge and Whitby, and return visits to Sidmouth and Shrewsbury, amongst others.2013 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet. In April, Blackbeard’s Tea Party issued their second full length album “Whip Jamboree” and hit the road for their first UK headline tour, playing in gig venues far and wide. The CD itself received a nationwide release through Proper Music Distribution, the UK’s biggest independent music distributor, and reached #4 on the Amazon MP3 folk charts. The upcoming Summer promises a fantastic run of festivals once again, including return visits to Sidmouth (3 consecutive years), Beverley and another headline slot at Galtres, alongside first visits to Bingley Live, Broadstairs, Holmfirth and many more. Once festival season is over, the band head out on the road again, emabarking on their second full UK tour in the Autumn, in support of “Whip Jamboree”.

In between all these shows, Blackbeard’s Tea Party can still be found busking on the streets of York, and you can also see them live at their own gigs across the country, in a local music venue, pub, folk club or living room.

Nick Harper [+]

Tuesday 26th November

£8.00 Tickets

see

nick-harper-press-photo-06m

Son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper, Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. Having played the guitar from the age of 10 and surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, it was no surprise when Nick made his recording debut on his father’s Whatever Happened to Jugula? in 1985.

Nick’s talent and energy entranced Roy’s fans and it was inevitable that he would begin touring and recording in his own right. The 1994 EP Light at the End of the Kennel was swiftly followed by his powerful 1995 debut long player Seedprompting The Independent to describe him as “hugely talented”.

In 1996 Nick met Squeeze frontman and songwriter Glenn Tilbrook. Tilbrook was so impressed that he offered Nick a job playing with and supporting Squeeze and promptly signed Nick to his own label, Quixotic Records. Following tours in the UK, USA and Japan, Nick recorded the 1998 album Smithereens with Tilbrook as producer. This album and subsequent 40 date solo tour, including dates in New York and Glastonbury, confirmed Nick as a formidable talent in his own right. “If imagination, energy and bags of talent were the only factors in making a successful pop career, few would deny that Squeeze man Glenn Tilbrook has backed a winner in Nick Harper…Splendid stuff” – MOJO magazine. He teamed up with Tilbrook again on 2000’s highly acclaimed album Harperspace. This is the album that confirmed his position at the forefront of a new generation of British Acoustic Performers.“Nick Harper has a quality that stands head and shoulders above anything else you are likely to encounter…The Verse Time Forgot from the new album ‘Harperspace’ is as close to a perfect song as you are likely to get.” Edinburgh Evening News

To call Nick a superlative singer/songwriter could put his highly lauded guitar talent in the shade, and to call him a guitarist’s guitarist might slight his distinctive, soulful voice and passionate songs. Not forgetting the wild ride that is one of his live shows – from personal introspection to biting political satire via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud. He often segues from his own compositions to well-loved covers he makes his own – he takes on Presley, Zappa, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, Monty Python and Public Enemy (yes, on an acoustic guitar). He also has the alarming ability to break guitar strings almost by sheer force of will… and then change them without dropping a beat. For over a decade, he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with this heady mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado. His talent and showmanship were recognised in 2003 with a (Glasgow) Herald Fringe Angel award for excellence in live music during his Edinburgh Festival run. “Harper has so much musicianship in him that it just leaks out all over the place.” The Times

After 6 studio albums, a double live CD and 2 EPs (including Instrumental, a stunning display of his guitar talents), Nick’s work is still as fresh and vital as that of his first solo release in 1994. The recently released sixth studio album,Miracles For Beginners, was a return to a more stripped-down acoustic based style, from the folk tale of the meeting of King Henry 8th and Francis 1st in 1520 in The Field Of The Cloth Of Gold. to a beautiful latin tinged paean to the the Bolivian President Evo Morales in Evo. But, as with his highly personal 2004 “family album” Blood Songs, he still has time to sing about the most important things in his world – family, friends, love, life.

2010 sees the release of Nicks 10th CD The Last Guitar. An eclectic mix of 12 songs showing off Nicks unabashed individuality and bold choices allied to a new maturity. Included are a gumshoe detective story called Pop FictionOne of the 38, a dedication to the trekkers on the Everest trail and Silly Daddy, which has the recording debut of his daughter Lily.

Between solo albums, Nick tours with a vengeance. In the first 8 months of 2005 alone, he’d traversed the UK from Devon to the most northerly point in Scotland, along with 2 dates in Holland and acclaimed sets at Glastonbury, Beautiful Days (with his band Sleeper Cell), Oysterband’s Big Session and other festivals including 2 tsunami benefit gigs in Thailand.

Plan 9 from Harperspace was the spring tour of 2007 promoting the new DVD ‘Love Is Music‘ – a ‘rockumentary’ style film with a selection of Nick’s best loved songs recorded in 5.1 sound.

Also recently released was Nick’s first single for download on iTunes. Taken from the CD ‘Miracles For Beginners‘ and called ‘Blue Sky Thinking‘ it quickly went to no.1 in iTunes downloads. All proceeds from the single were donated to the Love Hope Strength Foundation. Nick had just returned from Nepal after setting a new world record for the highest gig on earth at Kala Pattar above Mt. Everest Base Camp on October 21st 2007, whilst helping raise over £200,000 for the fight against cancer, before going on to play as part of the Love Hope Strength all-star band to approximately 20,000 people in Kathmandu.

Nick has been on two further treks with the foundation to Macchu Picchu in Peru and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania helping to raise substantial funds for local cancer centres and hospitals.

Merry Hell has risen phoenix-like from the embers of 90’s cult rabble-rousers The Tansads.  – for many who knew them, the finest band never to make it BIG – a quasi folk-punk-rock orchestra that enjoyed a career spanning 5 albums and countless tours. Brought together again in 2010, for 3 triumphant reunion gigs at their spiritual home of The Citadel, St Helens, the venue for their celebratory live album, ‘Drag Down the Moon’.

As the dust settled on the reunion shows, the decision had been made that a revitalized band should take the spirit of The Tansads forward into a new era. So Merry Hell was raised.

The Kettle brothers, John, Bob, and Andrew are back, joined by John’s wife, Virginia, who brings both acoustic guitar and the perfect vocal foil to Andrew’s gravelly delivery. Former Tansads, Lee Goulding on keyboards and drummer Andy Jones consolidate the line-up, completed by bassist Andrew Dawson.

Known for their original, emotionally charged and anthemic songs, this band are just as much at home producing exquisitely crafted recordings in the studio as they are in their high-energy assaults on the souls of live audiences.

Dog Head Music Society presents… The Black Diamond Express [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Formed in 2007 the BDE have garnered praise on the back of an extensive catalogue of new music, stirred with a large measure of roots and blues. They are described by The List as “an 9-piece soaked in poetry, myth and bourbon… The BDE somehow stay true to both Robert Johnson and The Sex Pistols… armed with bellowing sermons and a swaggering, suited performance equally worthy of The Spiegel Tent or Glastonbury.”

Their synergy and onstage presence ensure that everyone – both band and audience – enjoy themselves. These factors made the unorthodox decision to release a ‘live’ first album a remarkably easy one, even though the process was more challenging than traditional routes.

The band were last year nominated for a Scottish BAFTA for their work on the short film ‘A Zombie Musical’. In another outing members were closely involved with flourishing educational project ‘The Tinderbox Orchestra’ and performed for the Dalai Lama on his recent State visit. Adding to a loyal and committed fan-base, this is a band with celebrity endorsement.

“I freakin’ love The Black Diamond Express,” enthuses Never Mind the Buzzcocks comedian Phil Nichol. “It’s the only trip I’ve ever been on where I’ve enjoyed the journey more than the destination. Actually, that’s a lie – I enjoyed the destination too.”

As well as the successful May 5th launch of their long-awaited opus at The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, the band opened the year supporting American giants The Mavericks and legendary group ‘The Magic Band’. This is followed closely by a whistle-stop round of national and international tour dates; including, not only a headline slot at Midsummer Music Festival, but will also close the main stage at Insider Festival. Plans for a feature documentary are in the pipe-line too.
