Open Mic Session with Me and Deboe [+]

Free Entry

Open Mic slots available from 8pm with your hosts Me and Deboe…

Me And Deboe 1

Pic from – Tay Ren

A simple combination of two voices and two guitars make up ME and Deboe: a cocktail of infectious rhythms, haunting melodies and clever lyrics is the potent result.

Classically trained Mercy Elise and self-taught Sarah Deboe move effortlessly between powerful chords and delicate, percussive riffs to bring a stripped back and distinctly original sound to both their own music and their cover versions. Sharply observed, frequently witty lyrics are their trademark and brought to life by Mercy’s strong, raw contralto and Sarah’s softer, blue-eyed soul.

REPENT feat. The Kindest Of Thieves [+]

Thursday 12th December – Free Entry

The Sound You’ll Hear (aka THE SUPREME TRUTH)

GOOD STRONG MUSIC. It will be both VARIOUS and EXTRA SPESH. We do not understand the point of Rihanna but we know that Wu-Tang are forever.

Humans (aka The GOOD and the BADASS)

We play music for good people who have ears and like denim: skinny jeans, baggy jeans, cut-off into hot-pants jeans. And jeans that have Nice’d Up a Dance or two in their time

Drinking (aka The RAPTURE aka The LIBATION)

Two pint buzz is the world’s best buzz: we sell pints. Two-cocktail buzz is also excellent and often too expensive: but not here. Two for one on a variety of lip-smacking brain-shaking cocktails.

Tequila (aka The TEMPTATION of Jesus Chris)

In the year 1600, Tequila was invented by crazy a Mexican especially for lco Cestrians. THAT’s YOU! Together we will celebrate the intelligence and kindness of Don Pedro Sanchez de Tagle by letting you pay 100pesos £1 for one Tequila. Mucho Calor: No Doubt.

The Kindest Of Thieves

Just who are Kindest of Thieves…….within a relatively short lifetime, conflicting incarnations manifested, chief thief Chris Fox developing an almost rockabilly Morrissey persona in August last year, suave and sophisticated, vocals delivered with precision accompanied by lyrically perspicacious themes for his “Serial Mothers and Terminal Hunchbacks” EP.

Never one to rest on laurels, Fox revealed darker edges in December, abducting drummer Sam Lightfoot, dragging him kicking and screaming from Warrington sunlight into a dank, desolate dungeon surrounded by instruments of torture, chained callously behind kit. Here, Chris bared his deepest, darkest fantastical thoughts, formulating a selection of chillingly macabre songs, the lo-fi production only adding to the ominous sense of foreboding, perversely thrusting upon an unsuspecting public immediately prior the festive period the “Ladies and Gentlemen, My Sweetheart The Lonely. ” EP. A delightfully twisted Black Christmas ensued.

And so to 2013…..curiously, Lightfoot, rather than repelled by his experience, developing Stockholm Syndrome, a kinship evolves with tormentor, currently foisting themselves onto the North West live circuit to much acclaim. What’s next………who knows……possibly not even Fox and Lightfoot, such the ability of re-invention. One thing’s for sure, whatever the future brings it can only prove the most enthralling and beguiling of rides…..grab your ticket, hold tight, you might just find you love every single minute.

The Andy Bennett Band [+]

Friday 13th December

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Warrington’s best kept secret- ‘The Andy Bennett Band’. They smoke fags and stuff, drink beer and snort at boybands. Their amps go up to TWELVE, and they’re not ashamed to sweat as they play. They won’t woo you with choreography and production, they will seduce you with raw guitar, animal drums and throbbing bass. They play ‘The Who’, and you understand why Townsend smashed his guitar. Their takes on Hendrix are both authentic and evocative of what could have been at the same time.

The Beatelles – Show cancelled [+]

Saturday 14th December

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Beatelles

The Beatelles are one of the world’s top female Beatles tribute bands and the only one from the UK, they’re also all ‘scousers’ just like the Fab Four themselves.

They believe The Beatles made the best music ever written and seek to play it with the soul and passion it deserves, but with a feminine edge! Playing a lot of The Beatles later material from iconic albums such as Abbey Road and The White Album, the girls have a reputation for putting their own twist on the songs; giving the audience a fresh and contemporary take on The Beatles music.

With an ever growing fan base at their live shows, they perform across the UK and Internationally – including shows at Liverpool’s own world famous Cavern Club.

Being the first female Beatles tribute band from the UK has created opportunities to perform with famous bands and solos acts including ‘The Persuaders’, ‘Denny Laine’ (from Moody Blues and Wings), ‘Hal Bruce’ and his ‘Summer of Love’ band, ‘The Swinging Blue Jeans’, ‘The Pete Best Band’, ‘Apple Jam’ from the USA, ‘The Blue Margarets’ from Japan, their mates ‘Revolver’ from Scotland and not forgetting their brothers; Liverpool’s own ‘The Mersey Beatles’.

They have played the Mathew St Festival and International Beatles Week in their own city of Liverpool since 2007. Check out the ‘gig listings page’ for upcoming shows.

Having recently returned from successful concerts in France & Finland, the girls are looking forward to a very busy 2012 and some very exciting times ahead…

Thea Gilmore – The Christmas Party [+]

Standing concert – SOLD OUT

see

“Here’s to tonic, here’s to gin, here’s to sparks and here’s to gasoline…” You’re The Radio

We are lucky to have musicians like Thea Gilmore, musicians that want more from themselves and more from music than some pre-formed, whistle-friendly cud, something to chew on but never fully digest. In an age where artists – male and female – tend to be either hyper-sexualised or completely neutered, Gilmore is that rare creature, an actual adult with a heart and a soul, a grown up with an opinion. Thea Gilmore is a real person tackling the sort of issues real people deal with every day, only, unlike the rest of us, she tackles those issues with an utterly beautiful voice and songs that touch on folk and jazz and rock and Americana.

Not for no reason does Bruce Springsteen buy her records, do artistes ranging from Martha Wainwright to Mike Scott seek to collaborate with her, and not for no reason does Tom Waits’ celebrated percussionist Michael Blair appear on Murphy’s Heart, Gilmore’s tenth album – one that follows a sustained period of artistic and critical success.

2008’s Liejacker was a deeply personal collection that included a track with Joan Baez. It was, in Gilmore’s words, “the lovechild of whisky and heartache”. The Observer seemed to agree, noting that these songs would, “make your heart catch, your skin prickle and your eyes fill with tears”, which seems a good place to start. The Times said that last year’s Strange Communion was so good it just proved that Gilmore is, “unarguably one of the finest singer-songwriters of her generation.”  There is the sense of a tipping point being reached. Album ten is a serious landmark release in anyone’s book except, perhaps, that one owned by the artist in question.
