The Skin Imps [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

The Skin Imps 1

Collectively known as The Skin Imps, these three individuals – whom I shall introduce presently – have blazed a trail for many years, but have largely remained in the shadows, honing their skills in preparation for the coming apocalypse, ready to strike from a secret encampment on the bordertowns of society at a moments notice.

That moment is now!

Guided by the voice of God (Lee Majors), they have made it their sacred quest to reintroduce the world to their forgotten childhood, by assaulting them with powerful, mesmerising, dirty and sexual versions of Jamie and the Magic Torch, The Littlest Hobo, Thundercats and many other classic themes from 1980s television. This is their fight, their calling, their honour.

There is no other way to say it but ‘Flute Wrangler’ Laura J Martin is back with a follow up to her lauded debut album ‘The Hangman Tree’.

‘Dazzle Days’ her sophomore album was recorded over three months on a journey from Maghull to Hoxton via Reykjavík.
13 sumptious tracks bumping into each other like a Brownian motion demonstration these audio vitamins bed down to represent Laura’s best work yet. ‘Dazzle Days’ features now regular collaborators Mike Lindsay (Tunng) on vocals and Benge who mixed and added synth, Enoesqe beds and Oldfield reverbs at his studio Play Industries.

Thematically expanding on the experience of producing a commissioned soundtrack for the BFI and with a burgeoning interest in golden age composers such as Sven Libaek and Francois de Roubaix. Laura also took inspiration from Jeremy Steigs collaboration album with Pia Zaidora. Imagine ‘Butterfly ‘starring and sound tracked by Laura Nyro, yeah that good.

Tighter pop tunes but convoluted structures. Wonky progressive flute but laurel canyon sweetness, it’s all present and correct.

The album will be preceded by the track ‘Red Flag’ as a pay what you want on band camp and promoted by a two month tour with Euros Childs both as support and a member of Euros’s band.

“The Doors Alive is the closest thing you will get to being in the same room as the real thing. Close your eyes and you will be transported back to 1966 Whisky a Go-Go and the sounds that made The Doors one of the most iconic and revered bands, 40 years on from the tragic death of Jim Morrison” – Jon Wing – Promoter, Academy Music Group

“If you thought Val Kilmer was good, be warned this guy is even better. Moving and singing like Morrison the rich baritone clung to the air like molasses – Simply THE best Doors tribute band on the road at the moment” – Ron Clooney – Author of “Mr. Mojo Risin”

The Daymons EP Launch [+]

Friday 17th January

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

plus DJ Lowrider

Coming straight outta Chester, via too many vias to get into, the daymons got it together in late 2012, though their collective history goes back many more years… Jim, Tim, Guy… Through shared houses in lesser parts of London Town, call-centre drudgery and pre-dawn raves in abandoned cinemas… Through Britpop nearly weres, hard rock players, electronica, dub-step before anyone had called it that, and the world’s first ‘Roses tribute, these fellas have been around the block and beyond, landing back in the old town; same place, same time.

The trio in an attic, two acoustics and a muted trumpet … Let’s do it… Trio became quartet with Richie B… hair, vibes, folk and relative youth … Quintet then, with Fran, first time bassist and born to do it… Five in a pub car park, someone knows a drummer (someone always knows a drummer) … Five become six … he’s a drummer, yes, but also a tickler of ivories, a singer of harmonies, a teller of tales. Six of the best then… lots of guitars, a horn … lots of singers and more song-writers than a New York café in ‘66 … they’re doing it ‘cause they love it and, man, they love to do it.

The Daymons EP cover

Recorded at Aerial Studios over two days, engineered and produced by
Andrea Wright, this EP features four tracks that showcase the daymons
song-writing and sound.

“…clear and bright, full of movement and optimism. As a six piece they are musically complex yet open sounding and dis-tinct. There are some fabulous harmonies going on as the vo-cals switch and change from one performer to another. Here choruses add and amplify rather than diluting the songs… theirs is a great sound with melodies that stay with you.”

Chemistry Lane

Chemistry Lane 1

Chemistry Lane have been gaining a reputation for their meticulous approach to composing experimental indie music. With layered instrumental depth and the juxtaposition of delicately bold melody, Chemistry Lane create a sound which is totally unique but remains captivatingly familiar. This is not to say that the five-piece are a typical band, as they constantly seek to refine their sound to be accessible and immersive, whilst pushing their own boundaries into the realm of the avant-garde. In a live environment the audience engage with their music from within thick walls of sound and hypnotic melody.

“Melody twists through a perfect storm of oceansize guitars, dark grooves and brooding beats.”

The Maydays bring a thoroughly dancable brand of jangly indie that’s made for the summer and provides the perfect way to loosen up at the start of a Saturday night.

Definitely one for those in tight jackets and skinny jeans feeling nostalgic for 2007.
