The Smiths Indeed [+]

£10 Tickets

The Smiths Indeed 1

The Smiths Indeed were formed in Liverpool in 2005, after a deceptively placed advertisement [SINGER NEEDED TO FRONT SMITHS COVER BAND. MUST BE TALENTED. GIGS WAITING.] caught the eye of an ambitious aficionado. The band consists of Smiths devotees and outstanding musicians. Their trump card is a singer with uncannily similar vocal chords to Morrissey’s. In a relatively short space of time, The Smiths Indeed have emerged as a fantastic live act, aiming to capture the essence of a mid-1980s Smiths concert. And flailing.

They have toured extensively around the United Kingdom, the USA and Europe, playing to full capacity audiences of Smiths fans old and new in – among other places – Newcastle, Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool, Brighton, Glasgow and Los Angeles. Their first gig in December 2005 was in a small basement bar in Glasgow; the final gig of 2010 saw them triumphantly celebrating the 25th anniversary of Meat Is Murder at Manchester Apollo. “It goes on… goes on… goes on… goes on… goes on.”

The Smiths Indeed offer a fantastic night of nostalgia for those who remember those distant days in the mid-1980s when The Smiths lit up the world of popular music. For those who weren’t even born then or were otherwise engaged, they offer a great opportunity to witness what it might have been like to see The Smiths live. After all, a Smiths Indeed show is meant to be a celebration of The Smiths. Apportez vos fleurs.

“a brilliant tribute to The Smiths”. i-D Magazine

Son Of Dave 1

Infamous for his one-man band style, both in the studio and on the road, Son Of Dave, AKA Benjamin Darvill, has been making music for almost a quarter of a century. He has played hundreds of raucous shows across the globe, sold upwards of forty thousand records and built a fiercely loyal international fan-base.

The former drummer with Crash Test Dummies and all round eccentric performer has a particular flare for the harmonica and makes a formidable racket, dragging the blues kicking and screaming into the 21st century in the shape of ‘sweet devil’s music’. They broke the mould with this one.

Mark Radcliffe & Foes [+]

£8.00 Tickets

From deepest, darkest Cheshire, land of perpetual twilight, emerge rambling radio roustabout Mark Radcliffe and Foes. As opposed to friends.
With a selection of songs to burn coffins to, these misanthropic minstrels; these downbeat Dee bank dirgesmiths; these glum-pop pall-bearers of bar-room bathos bring tales of loss, regret, ruin, heartbreak and dead dogs. Mark’s previous band The Family Mahone specialised in drinking songs. Now feel the full force of the hangover as the Foes set the morning after the night before to music.

Joining Mark, thanks to a care-in-the-community placement programme, are former Mahones Christopher Lee, the dark prince of double bass and mandolin; and Rusty Mabbutt, still striving to achieve two pin-falls and a submission over the piano accordion. Noted Northwich bowler-hatted bare-knuckle knave Mark Woolley is also on hand to lend lilting low whistle and to hit a box with barely concealed menace.

So, encounter the Foes and an evening of abject misery is guaranteed.

Keys [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Keys 1

Having risen from the ashes of the much lauded Murry The Hump – once labelled by Alex James of Blur as ‘the best new band in Britain’, counting Damien Hirst and the late Joe Strummer as fans and notching up several John Peel sessions – Keys are a band whose musical pedigree cannot be argued with.

They’ve captured the imagination of industry and public alike with recent release ‘Fire Inside’ & ‘Bitten By Wolves’, garnering praise and support from Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, Clash magazine, Metro, BBC 6 Music, Radio 2, Shindig!, Mark Lamarr and BBC Radio Wales’ Adam Walton and Bethan Elfyn.

Drawing on a range of quality influences from Animal Collective, Captain Beefheart, Can, Spirit, The Black Keys, Frank Zappa, Panda Bear and Spiritualized, The Keys adeptly blend together the new and the old, sitting alongside the likes of Super Furry Animals, The Coral, Malachai, Tame Impala and The Bees

The Loose Kites [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Imagine if you will a band. Not just any ordinary band, but a band cut from a different cloth.

A band with soul, whose sole mission is to infect the planet with love, with passion and with music to make you smile and make you think. Imagine, if you can, the loose kites.

With a unique and dynamic eight-piece line up, including members with diverse backgrounds, the kites represent something different. With a sound which includes elements of folk, pop, rock and more, the band relies not only on the staples of voice, guitar, bass and drums, but also brass, woodwind, strings and keys. Those additional elements make the distinctive kites sound a fuller one. That sound still accentuates the positive, with the focus very much on the groove, and the catchiness of the tunes. Harmonies abound, and melody is king.

The band has developed and adapted new elements into its core since being formed five years ago. After the release of their self-titled debut back in 2009, the band quickly picked up gigs, radio and an endorsement with the highly acclaimed Farida guitar company, alongside Oasis, Maximo Park, The Levellers and The Wombats. The company has hailed them as ‘…one of the most exciting folk acts this country has produced in recent years’.

Now the kites are moving forward with their brand new album, ‘Of Bricks And Brambles’. A marked progression from their debut, the album shows that the band are not afraid of expressing themselves in a variety of musical settings. Taking inspiration from local life on the terraced streets where they grew up, the album takes queues from far and wide, and transfers them into the band’s very special sound. The album is accompanied by a range of exciting and witty videos which will be used to promote forthcoming singles.

With an enviable live record, including headlining national festivals, the band’s shows have become legendary in their home area. Most recently rocking Telford’s Warehouse in Chester, the band are set for select UK and international dates in 2014.

The loose kites mix a strong sense of local tradition with an international outlook. Their music is good-time-low-down-good-fun, delivered within a timeless setting, of emotion and soulfulness. Make sure you are at the album launch, and are ready to dance and sing your heart out.

Open Mic Session with Me & Deboe [+]

Free Entry

Me And Deboe 1

Pic from – Tay Ren

A simple combination of two voices and two guitars make up ME and Deboe: a cocktail of infectious rhythms, haunting melodies and clever lyrics is the potent result.

Classically trained Mercy Elise and self-taught Sarah Deboe move effortlessly between powerful chords and delicate, percussive riffs to bring a stripped back and distinctly original sound to both their own music and their cover versions. Sharply observed, frequently witty lyrics are their trademark and brought to life by Mercy’s strong, raw contralto and Sarah’s softer, blue-eyed soul.

Simon McBride [+]

£14 Tickets

Simon Mcbride 1

McBride is now among the best blues-rock players anywhere in the world.” GUITARIST MAGAZINE

“Hugely accomplished.” MOJO

Fast becoming the next Irish blues guitar hero in the footsteps of Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore, former Young Guitarist of the Year Simon McBride has undeniable guitar artistry combined with a fine voice and a knack for creating memorable hooks and great melodies.

Rewind to the early-’90s, and you didn’t have to squint to spot future greatness in the unassuming kid from Belfast, who picked up his first guitar at ten and eschewed formal lessons to bend his fingers around the music of Free, Jeff Beck and Hendrix. At 16, he turned pro, leaving education behind to wow the world as a hired gun in projects that ranged from filling Vivian Campbell’s shoes in Sweet Savage, to R&B and soul with ex-Commitments vocalist Andrew Strong.

Even by the lofty standards of Northern Ireland, where drinkers still raise a toast to the audacious talent of the late Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore, this young maestro’s name was soon starting to be dropped in the same reverential breath. Certainly, Simon is a fan, and the energy and aggression of his live show recalls those much-missed Irish masters, but McBride’s sound is his own – as demonstrated on his much acclaimed latest album Crossing The Line. He has supported such great names as Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck and and Joe Bonamassa. Now it’s his turn. Step-forward a new world-class talent.

“Ireland has a knack of throwing up diamonds, of which McBride most definitely is one… this boy’s going places.” HIFI+

When you hear an artist that reminds you of your fondest memory, your dreams, the best film you’ve seen all year, your favourite record of all time and your first love that has to be a good day. Manchester based singer songwriter Stefan Melbourne possesses that very gift.

Filed neatly next to popular troubadours Ben Howard, Ray Lamontagne and Bon Iver, Melbourne binds fragile, heartfelt lyrics to simple yet robust musicality and delivers them with “An incredible voice which sounds like a huskier take on Tim Buckley’s.”

After a busy 2013, supporting the likes of Ryan Keen, Kathryn Williams, Rae Morris, Nathaniel Rateliff, George Ezra, John Smith and Luke Sital Singh. 2014 sees Melbourne return with his new EP ‘The Way We Fall’. Recorded over 5 cold December days in Manchester’s Sacred Trinity Church with producer Sam Jones. (Alex Turner, Soweto Kinch, Corinne Bailey Rae) It also features Dave Walsh on Drums (Tom McRae), John Parker on Double Bass (Nizlopi/Paper Aeroplanes) and vocals from Welsh Songbird Chloe Leavers. ‘The Way We Fall’ is a stunning sonic document from a singer-songwriter with great things ahead.
