Everything Is Now presents… Black Star Dub Collective [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Black Star Dub Collective 1

Black Star Dub Collective formed in the cold Winter of 2009/2010 with a desire to express their love of soundsystem culture. Forming in Manchester’s vibrant squat scene on Rusholme’s Dickenson Road the bands line up snowballed in to a full blown collective of members and participants who wanted to take their love of dub/reggae/roots and dancehall music to the next level. As well as wanting to sound there musical influences BSDC wanted to voice their social and political concerns to a wider audience combining bass heavy tunes with a tuff and radical political message.

After six months of constant gigging and touring including a tour of France the band released a split 12” on Pumpkin Records with dub punks Autonomads entitled ‘From Rusholme with Dub’ paying homage to their stamping ground. The band continued to gig heavily including a tour of Holland and festival appearances in summer 2012 alongside Bush Chemists, Mungos Hifi, and Dubkasm to name but a few. Now with their debut record almost totally sold out the band are about to release a 7” single produced by Manchester reggae legend Nucleus Roots productions and preparing for another year on the road with a fresh line up and more politically conscious bass driven sounds.

Open Mic Session with Hanami [+]

Free Entry

Chester’s longest running open mic session is this week hosted by nomadic Hanami…

Hanami

We move from town to town, city to city, country to country, we mirror our audience as they mirror us

Free forming foundations, two swans drifting untouchably out to sea, harmonic beans on toast, from the sky to the ground, living on the floor, cross stitching lines across time, children dream whilst nuzzling the velvet bust, houses built out at sea, singing shantys for sanity, clarity, freedom, future, past and present, getting off easy, twanging bellies before the heavy brick, rushing blood and air, careering toward the unknown in the promised Eastern horizon.

Feet on peddles, hands clamped to the wheels ringing, hair trailing behind, paws pounding, tounge lolling, nose sniffing, down the road mama down the road, the hound is following.

We’ll get there in the end.

Lost Hollow plus support Ash Mountain [+]

Free Entry

Lost Hollow 1

You may have never heard of Nashville duo Lost Hollow. But if you listen to the likes of Bob Harris on the radio, you certainly have heard Tommy Harden. Tommy is a top call Nashville studio drummer, playing on many of today’s biggest country hits. On the road, Tommy plays drums for internationally renowned Reba McEntire in arenas across the world. In Lost Hollow he gets to step out and show a different side, put down the sticks and pick up the guitar and sing. Tommy started playing guitar at the age of 11 and singing at the age of 15.

But he’s only half of the duo. The ‘better’ half is Lor. A hit songwriter friend once said, “Lor is the best singer in Nashville, she’s like a best kept secret!” Putting her vocal career on the back burner to raise 6 kids, Lor is finally making her amazing vocals a priority. Her voice has been described as both ‘rich as chocolate’ and ‘captivating,’ ‘a voice to be heard.’

With their first album attracting great reviews and radio play, this will be a night not to be missed. Check out the album on iTunes and the video to lead track, “Drifting”  here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZGk6_05t6k

Lost Hollow is an emotive powerhouse of a duo, their songs draw you in and won’t let go. Get introduced to your next favourite band!

Support comes from Manchester’s Ash Mountain, who bring their country/folk/blues songs down the M56, ready to be delivered with an engaging grace and panache. New vinyl EP available on Manchester Spins record label. “Superbly structured songs, layers of sound that ooze quality” Manchester Music website

Blow Out presents… The Kindest Of Thieves [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Kindest Of Thieves 1

Kindest of Thieves are songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Christopher J Fox and drummer Samuel L Lightfoot. Their dark, brooding, gothy and frankly noisy brand of rock & roll and roots music is unavoidably enjoyable. Whether their music is too melancholic or their live show is too intense for your tastes, you can’t be help but be perversely drawn in to the world in which Kindest of Thieves live and seethe.
Enigmatic songwriter Christopher J Fox pours his struggle with mental illness and misanthropic preaching’s into songs that sound truly liberating when accompanied by some of the biggest hooks and most aggressive guitar playing and drumming you’re likely to hear this year. Anthems for the downtrodden. Drummer Samuel L Lightfoot thrashes at his meagre drum kit, giving the listener the impression that he is sadistically giving the songs welts and lacerations to punctuate the macabre lyrics. A truly extraordinary match of two musicians.
Kindest of Thieves have thrust five releases onto the unsuspecting public this year, with another EP set for release before the year is through. Their gigging schedule has been equally as relentless, and a list of the venues they’ve assaulted with their mere presence this year is available by request.

Blow Out

Blow-Out is a fortnightly explosion of vintage ace for modern tastes: Hammond grooves, Northern soul stompers, lysergic fuzz and 60?s girl pop.
For lovers of If…, Booker T, The Prisoner, Dansettes, paisley shirts, handclaps, Vox AC30?s, Rita Tushingham, the A-line, the immortal, crackling genius of the 45.

The John Fairhurst Band [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

John fairhurst

Wigan native Fairhurst has been honing his craft on the road combining his passions for people and music for years. The result is an awe inspiring wall of sound rooted in his northern blues background with gritty mournful deep-south attitude and a voice to carry it home.

Introduced to Sarod Master K. Sridhar at the age of 5 when he stayed with John’s family, John’s music has a distinctly eastern feel, with influences from the Sarod Master as well as his own travels through Asia. With a bottle-neck style blues referencing the likes of Son House and Bukka White, comparisons to the fingerpicking of John Fahey, a leaning towards the psychedelic 60’s rock of Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and the ever present influence of K. Sridhar and Indian raga, John’s music is a real melting-pot of diverse musical traditions freely hand picking tunes from the Mississippi to the Ganges.

John Fairhurst truly epitomises the modern day wandering blues man. Stories of hunger, listlessness, roaming and reckless abandon are just a prelude to John’s story, something that can only be fully understood in the presence of the man. John tells stories of wading into the sea off the New Zealand coast to smash raw oysters off rocks simply to get something to eat, but fortunately times have changed. He has since gone on to tour the globe, eat moderately well and entertain crowds at illustrious festivals such as SXSW, Glastonbury and Tarragona blues festival (Headlining slot) to name but a few. John’s enigmatic stories relayed through intense and original blues are all told using his trademark howling vocals; think Captain Beefheart meets Tom Waits.

John’s wanderlust character, lead him to New York in 2009 where he arrived with only a bag of clothes and his beloved resonator. He met a fellow blues player and proceeded to arrange and perform 14 sell out shows in a 15 days, a feat demonstrating what a gifted performer John truly is. Bare chested and tattooed (by monks in a Thai temple), when John Fairhurst walks onto a stage you know you are not only about to hear incredible blues, but the tale of one mans tireless journey leaving a lasting impression wherever he stops.

With three independent albums under his belt, he has garnered critical acclaim with The Guardian describing his 2008’s instrumental  debut album ‘Joys of Spring’ as “Truly exquisite”. His following releases 2010’s ‘John Fairhurst Band’ and 2012’s ‘Hungry Blues’ were also hailed in similar manner.

Coupled with his tenacious attitude to touring and following a summer of explosive live shows both in the UK and Europe, John has built on previous festival appearances at Glastonbury, SXSW, Green Man and Edinburgh Festival to widen his audience with appearances at Secret Garden Party, Shambala, Boomtown as well as with residencies on the Harley Davidson European Tour and a tour with Johnny Winter as well as a series of shows over the Christmas period and into next year. 2014 looks bright in John Fairhurst world with a Spring release to show case new songs, a new band and an electrifying new sound.

His work ethic onstage is reflected in his creative process with collaborations over the years with African Kora master Sekou Kouyate, Joe Driscoll (local posse), world champion beatboxers Reeps One and Bellatrix and underpinned by stickman James Breen and beatbox blues duo HeyMoonShaker.

Currently in the studio following a gruelling 200+ shows across 8 countries John is preparing for a busy few months with the release of his new electric album set for Spring 2014. Recording sessions are taking place between Bristol and London’s Dean Street Studios. With Nathan Lewis and Alex Beitzke at the helm engineering and producing, John is accompanied by old faithfuls Joe Strouzer on harp, Toby Murray on drums with the addition of new band member Luke Barter on Bass. The new album is a full on electric blues experience with John unleashing his virtuoso technique on some of his favourite guitars…. There’s a new sound and a whole lot of shows to come.

This is the sound of modern British blues….
