Chubby Knuckles Present… The Roseville Band [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

1. The Roseville Band 2013 web

Exciting Welsh music makers The Roseville Band return with their eagerly anticipated third album Temper. The band, who hail from the green country of North Wales, deliver explosive driven rock ‘n’ roll, and have been patiently building a reputation for their high energy live shows and stadium filling potential, which threatens to be fulfilled with this new offering. Forming the creative nucleus of the band are the guitarist brothers Andy and Steve Jones, who grew up in the North Wales countryside, in a house — Roseville — which over time drew in a community of friends and musicians from the surrounding area, giving rise to The Roseville Band in late 2006.

Having developed a cult following in their native Wales with the releases of their first two albums, Little Eyes In The Universe(PIAS 2010) and Shake The Walls (PIAS 2011), the band have earned support and mentions from the likes of NME, The Guardian and a host of online bloggers. Debuting with sessions and airplay on XFM, BBC Wales and Balcony TV, they’ve since progressed to reach new audiences around the world with press and airplays across Europe, the USA and Canada.

Live, The Roseville Band have a commendably intense work ethic — 500+ shows to date — establishing their reputation as fervently committed performers. An eventual tour of Europe, alongside triumphant performances at Glastonbury Festival, Sound City, and FOCUS Wales were eventually topped off with invitations to perform across the pond at Canadian Music Week and NXNE. During these trips the band previewed new material, attracting new industry admirers, resulting in them being dubbed “Standout International Act of NXNE 2012,” and later being signed to Pipe & Hat Records in Canada.

2013 finds the band as a leaner four-piece, and now, bringing a more aggressive and alternative slant to their music, which has them primed for new frontiers upon the imminent release of Temper. The new album is sure to catch many by surprise, and particularly those familiar with the band’s first two LPs, which largely reflected the band’s earlier influences, where echoes of Dylan and The Band featured heavily. By contrast Temper is a completely different beast, seeing the band finally coming into their own and posing a far more intriguing and ambitious proposition to that of their previous offerings. “Take It” and title track “Temper” highlight this exciting new chapter as well as any, presenting a band loaded with ideas and a new approach that sets them apart from their contemporaries.

This is the music of a band that has experienced life and the world on the road, providing them with new territories into which they willingly delve, culminating in a new record full of melodrama, verve, and a gut punching force that draws on everything from The Clash and Echo & The Bunnymen to fresher influences such as Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse. Brought to life by a freshly charged rhythm section, dark brooding guitars, and vocal melodies you could hang your coat on, they all play their own significant part in creating an explosive new sound that’s set to light up stages and airwaves alike.

Glenn Tilbrook [+]

Sold Out

Glenn Tilbrook

Mention Glenn Tilbrook and most people may immediately think of Squeeze. After all, with his writing partner Chris Difford, Tilbrook was responsible for Top Ten hits all around the world such as “Tempted”, “Hourglass”, “Cool For Cats” and “Up The Junction”. Ever since their first EP in 1977, Squeeze has delighted audiences with their brand of honky-tonk new wave and pithy lyricism, while their stock in the music world has seen the likes of Jools Holland, Paul Carrack and Elvis Costello all contribute to their work.

However, since an acrimonious split in 1998 Squeeze has been on the backburner. Although you might forgive him for resting on his laurels after 13 albums and countless tours all over the world, Tilbrook has continued to write and perform with the same enthusiasm that he brought to Squeeze’s earliest recordings. With his two solo albums, “The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook” and “Transatlantic Ping-Pong”, he proved he’s lost none of the joie-de-vivre that became Squeeze’s trademark. For 2009’s album “Pandemonium Ensues”, he injected some fresh faces by recruiting new band The Fluffers and some prestigious guests in the shape of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis. This has been complemented by a conversational live show that is delightfully shambling in its approach – Tilbrook loves blurring the boundary between crowd and performer by performing requests and even taking his audience for walkabouts to set up impromptu gigs!

Although a Squeeze reunion had always looked unlikely, Tilbrook and Difford’s paths slowly began to cross with more frequency, leading to a series of low-key gigs together in 2007. In 2008, super fan Mark Ronson presented them with the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, while Lily Allen called them the Robert De Niro of music when they received the Nordoff-Robbins Icon Award. With the addition of former Squeeze bassist John Bentley, and Fluffers pair Stephen Large and Simon Hanson, this lineup won fans all over again with gigs and festival appearances at the likes of V, Oxegen, Guilfest, T in The Park and Latitude, reminding us all of the outstanding back catalogue that Squeeze possess.

In 2010 Squeeze took hold of their own catalogue when they re-recorded 14 of their best-loved hits and released them under the name of ‘Spot The Difference’. An extensive and highly acclaimed UK tour followed capping an exhilarating year in which Squeeze performed at a number of festivals including a headline slot as part of the Greenwich Summer Sessions and an appearance at V Festival. The band also took part in the Concerts for Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall. Accompanied by a 30 piece orchestra the band took to the stage with an exclusive set of instruments customised by Damien Hirst. Following the concert, the instruments were auctioned at Christie’s and were the first guitar and drum kit to be sold in Christie’s April auction of Post-War and Contemporary Art. This special sale raised money for Teenage Cancer Trust and Love Hope Strength Foundation, two music focused cancer charities.

Squeeze’s contribution to music was noted when they were honoured with the Classic Songwriter award at the Mojo Honours 2011, an award that has previously been won by Ray Davies, Paul Weller and Johnny Marr. This follows on from a number of recognitions for Squeeze in the last few years. In March 2010 they had the site of their first ever gig in Greenwich commemorated by a PRS for Music Heritage Award, one of only a few bands to receive this honour alongside Blur and Dire Straits, and they were awarded with the PPL / Radio Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, joining the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Gary Barlow and Trevor Horn.

In 2011 Glenn released the album ‘The Co-Operative’ a collaboration between Glenn and Nine Below Zero and took to the road for a three month acoustic tour, each show was recorded live and then made available at the end of the night from the merchandise stand. In 2012 Squeeze adopted this idea when they embarked on their Pop Up Shop tour, a 22 date UK tour on which Squeeze performed brand new material and hinted at a new studio album.

In October 2012 BBC4 screened a brand new documentary ‘Squeeze: Take Me I’m Yours’ which reappraised the song-writing genius of Difford and Tilbrook, and showed why Squeeze hold a special place in British Popular music.

While continuing to write with Chris Difford for future Squeeze material, 2013 will see Glenn releasing an acoustic solo record and touring the US and the UK to support his new release. Clearly, for Glenn Tilbrook playing is about enjoying the moment and it’s that desire and enthusiasm that sets him apart from so many of his peers. Whether he’s playing to a room of 50 people or to a festival crowd, Glenn Tilbrook still gets the buzz from playing and making music that is all too rare among his peers or those he has inspired, and marks him out as a performer to be cherished.

Away from music Tilbrook continues to make a mark. He is a member of the charity Love Hope Strength, set up by his good friend Mike Peters (The Alarm). Work for this has involved record-breaking treks up the likes of Everest, Kilimanjaro and Mount Fuji with fellow musicians, raising money to buy equipment to help cancer sufferers across the world.

Nightflies

Nightflies 1

NIGHTFLIES are Jake, Winch, Reg and Mark; an alternative rock quartet based in Chester. The band met at the University do Chester in 2011, and musically they don’t like to stay in the same place for too long; currently jumping between indie-pop and thrashy punk with plenty of other ingredients thrown in for good measure. Influences being thrown around include Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Steely Dan and Two Door Cinema Club to name a few. Winch once said “make it prog-y, but not too prog-y” and it’s something we’ve stood by ever since.

Regularly gigging across the northwest, the band have shared the stage with the likes of We Are The Ocean and have played top slots at Liverpool’s Threshold Festival, Manchester’s Dot To Dot Festival and the Isle of Man’s Mannifest. 2012 saw the release of the Echoes E.P, along with a follow-up single, Our World, in 2013, recorded with Tony Platt (ACDC, Bob Marley) at Strongroom in London. A new 4-song E.P is underway, set for a summer 2014 release. Back in February of this year the band completed a 10-day acoustic busking tour of Europe with an accompanying documentary currently in the works.

Eager to get the new EP out soon, NIGHTFLIES are looking to make 2014 their best year yet.

Wilson Minds [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Wilson Minds 1

Wilson Minds are a new three piece alt-rock band from northwest England. Lead by singer, guitarist and songwriter Paul Wilkes, who describes their sound as “modern bluesy dark rock n roll, with a twist of Americana.” The classy rhythm section is made up by James Brogan (bass /vocals) and Carl Brightman (drums).

The band have spent a very short time launching their explosive alt rock assault on the scene, and now have just finished their debut album ‘I Am We Are’ with legendary producer Chris Potter (Verve, Blur, I Am Kloot) who fell in love with Paul’s demos. These are salt of the earth kinda guys with no big attitudes, just playing boss tunes, whose influences go from Neil Young and Crazy Horse through to The White Stripes and beyond.  ”I’m a scouser, Carl’s from Winfsord, and James is from Manchester” says Paul “so between us we represent the whole of the North West, even though we sound like a seventies American rock band! It took me a long time to find two like-minded lads and we’ve gelled together brilliantly”.

Wilson Minds released their debut album ‘I Am We Are’ in the fall of 2013 to a sold out Zanzibar Club in Liverpool, on October 5th to their fans on a purely word of mouth basis. Paul says “There’s no clever marketing or hype built around the release, just purely great music getting out there to people who still appreciate listening to a full record. Once the album is out then we will look at the options with various labels and investors to exploit the record reaching a wider audience in 2014.”

The debut album features some guest performances from the likes of Damon Minchella (Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller) and Geoff Wootten (The Gorillaz, Beady Eye) along with Paul and the band, the expertise knowledge and feel of production from Chris Potter this record is surely one people all around the world will want to own one day.

Stay tuned…

Jon Gomm is an acoustic singer-songwriter with an incredible virtuoso guitar style, where he uses one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and sparkling melodies all at the same time, and combining styles from blues and jazz to rock and pop. The emphasis is still on the soulful vocals and songwriting however, and his original material is influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead.

Alx Green

“Though Alx has been playing in bands for many years, it was only relatively recently he started to indulge his love for acoustic based music, and we’re very glad he did. The 24 year old self-taught musician draws influence from the likes of Bon Iver, Matt Corby and Ben Howard.

His new EP ‘It won’t last’ was recently released just before a week long tour of London playing a different venue every night to share his music with new audiences, the final night being at the Natural History Museum to around 800 people!

Marrying skilful songwriting with delicate arrangement and performance, but with a vocal capable of travelling from soft and intimate, to huge soaring dynamics, his music is evocative of classic acoustic songwriting, but with a new, fresh voice”
