The early part of his career with Dr Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo saw him record five albums and touring throughout Africa, Europe and North America before relocating to the UK with the HERITAGE Survival Band, a compelling, insistent dance band weaving shuffling and hypnotic up-beat chimurenga songs with fast-beat sungura music. Veteran performers all who have worked with some of the great names of African music, the Band is a musical powerhouse.

The Junkhouse Dog Blues Band 1

Junkhousedog is a Manchester based Blues band founded and fronted by ‘British Blues Harmonica Champion 2008/09’ Luke ‘Junkhousedog’ Shaw. Luke is a dynamite singer and front man. The energy that sparks off him, igniting the room as he plays, is contagious. He is a true harp heavyweight!

Junkhousedog mixes steamy shuffles and eclectic swing, with true vintage Chicago style grit. For them, the usual ‘Blues standard’ and ‘formulae’ does not apply.

Imagine if you will, catching a night out to watch a live band and walking into a joint where the atmosphere is literally jumpin’ ‘n’ hot, with an audience that looks like its shoelaces have caught fire! Like their heroes, the band’s honking tone drives the music like an express train steaming through the mid Western plains, making everyone who witnesses it stop in their tracks.

Welcome to the world of Junkhousedog, the Power of Blues!

REPENT feat The Daymons [+]

Free Entry

The Daymons

The Daymons

Coming straight outta Chester, via too many vias to get into, The Daymons got it together in late 2012, though their collective history goes back many more years… Jim, Tim, Guy… Through shared houses in lesser parts of London Town, call-centre drudgery and pre-dawn raves in abandoned cinemas… Through Britpop nearly weres, hard rock players, electronica, dub-step before anyone had called it that, and the world’s first ‘Roses tribute, these fellas have been around the block and beyond, landing back in the old town; same place, same time.

The trio in an attic, two acoustics and a muted trumpet … Let’s do it… Trio became quartet with Richie B… hair, vibes, folk and relative youth … Quintet then, with Fran, first time bassist and born to do it… Five in a pub car park, someone knows a drummer (someone always knows a drummer) … Five become six … he’s a drummer, yes, but also a tickler of ivories, a singer of harmonies, a teller of tales. Six of the best then… lots of guitars, a horn … lots of singers and more song-writers than a New York café in ‘66 … they’re doing it ‘cause they love it and, man, they love to do it.

REPENT feat. The Black Butterfly [+]

Free Entry

The Black Butterfly

The Black Butterfly

Raised by Wolves in the middle of Chester’s fountains roundabout, THE BLACK BUTTERFLY expanded upon a foundation of raw rock n’roll to a create a heady, sour-mash blend of rhythm & melody somewhere between the desert thirst of a spaghetti western, sleazy, whore-house blues and the later days of the Beatles psychedelia. This was not intentional. More so the natural reflection of a million influences and 5 souls indentured to making music, their own way & for their own reasons. Through a wall of guitars the songs tell stories of the sea, the bloodstream, luck, lust and redemption from heavy crime. With feet firmly on the floor and their heads high in the clouds, the band are working hands-on with independent labels to create their own means to record a full album this year; creating their own studio, their own scene and promotion for themselves and other artists of all kinds – music, film and visual arts – definitely ones to watch for 2014.

Open Mic Session with Ashley Fayth [+]

Free Entry

Ashley Fayth 1

Ashley Fayth’s whimsical songs are thoughtfully crafted and delivered, but with the simplicity and natural ease “of a clear river over rounded stones”, according to talent agent and industry guru Robert Singerman.

Hailing from the island of Newfoundland, a hotbed for some of Canada’s best storytellers and creative writers, the award-winning songstress delivers musical short stories saturated with colourful imagery and poetic prose.

David Farrell of Canadian entertainment blog NewCanadianMusic.com credits Fayth with having “a voice as clear and as beautiful as Waterford crystal,” and with “writing songs that are guiless enough to make you smirk and blush. In fact, it is not hard to call her sweetheart”.

Cleverly knit lyrics, playful rhythms, and flawless vocal delivery come together to form beautiful songs that are at once moving, witty, thought-provoking, and entertaining – a quirky yet enticing synthesis of the earthy and the ethereal.

And although Ashley’s dark side does surface in some of her more sombre and seductively haunting renditions, her sound is still overwhelmingly playful, refreshingly poppy, and irreproachably sweet.

The Newfie songbird moved to the UK last year to begin her Master’s thesis on The Importance of Green Space in 18thCentury British Literature but “got distracted” and wrote and recorded her single “Peanut Butter” which immediately picked up songwriting awards from both Universal Music and the Canadian Songwriters Association, leading Ashley to put her academic career on hiatus while she completed the album, Wonder Wonder.

Songs from Wonder Wonder were featured on BBC Radio 2, CBC Radio, and on more than 100 regional and national stations worldwide, at one point charting on college radio stations in the USA. “Peanut Butter” was also included alongside The Civil Wars and Los Lonely Boys on a compilation released by Inspire Entertainment.

Recently, Ashley has played showcases at CMJ in New York, South by Southwest in Austin, SoundCity in Liverpool, and Canadian Music Week in Toronto, and has been touring independently, in addition to representing Canada on theInternational Songwriters Tour, in the UK and North America.

Ashley is currently in the process of writing material for her new EP, I am the Bird scheduled to be released later this year.

Wonder Wonder is available for purchase in Ashley’s shop, on iTunes, and from all other major online music distributors. Visit Ashley’s website and join the mailing list to receive free downloads, news, and exclusive material.

REPENT feat. Indigo Sky [+]

Free Entry

Indigo Sky

Indigo Sky 1

Indigo Sky have been officially going since September 2011 when we got into a studio and recorded our first E.P. Over the first year we had tried to push into the cities around us such as Chester, Manchester and Liverpool. We succeeded and managed to work our way through the Surface Unsigned Festival in the Northern region which lead us to play venues such as Jabez Clegg, Dry Live and Academy 3 in Manchester. Out of the 200+ bands that entered in our region we managed to come 8th and just missed out on going to the international showcase.

Whilst in Surface Festival we were also in the middle of recording where the songs kept coming, in the end the project turned into an album! It took a year to complete and is now available to download on iTunes and Spotify.
