The Jokers [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Jokers

The Jokers burst out of the starting blocks with their debut album, ‘The Big Rock ‘N’ Roll Show’, in 2009, and then spent two years on the road building a substantial live following supporting the likes of Hawkwind, Y&T, Joe Elliot & The Down N Outz, Argent, Anvil and Fozzy.

‘The Big Rock And Roll Show’ was awarded Powerplay Magazine’s album of the month in July 2009, went straight on to Planet Rock Radio’s A Playlist and was universally acclaimed for its rare quality.

While mixed by Mike Fraser in Vancouver, (straight after he had mixed AC/DC’s 10 million plus selling Black Ice album), ‘The Big Rock And Roll Show’ was only recorded in guitarist Paul Hurst’s Liverpool living room, with duvets hanging on the walls to help the sound and provide a makeshift vocal booth.

Having sold over 8,000 physical CD’s and 6,000 downloads of ‘The Big Rock And Roll Show’, an incredible amount for a totally independent artist on their own label, The Jokers began writing ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Is Alive’ at the end of 2010, determined to produce an even more outstanding sophomore offering. Fired up, and laden with funds from sales of their debut, they hooked up with producer Andy Macpherson (Eric Clapton, The Who, Barclay James Harvest, The Buzzcocks etc), and began putting tracks down in his Revolution Studio in Cheadle Hulme.

When Macpherson heard the potential hit singles that The Jokers were creating, he insisted on perfection in recording every single vocal note, guitar part, and drum thwack. In between recording, (and to pay for all the perfectionist studio sessions) The Jokers spent the subsequent two years gigging round every rock pub and toilet club gig in the North of England, honing their live craft down and testing new songs out to capacity crowds at every concert. ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Is Alive’ was then finally mastered by Tim Young at Metropolis studios in London in February 2013.

The Jokers are; Wane Parry (Vocals) Paul Hurst (Guitarist) Simon Hurst (Bass) Chris Poole (Drums)

The Sundowners 1

Two girls from a seaside town on the Wirral bonding over a mutual love of psychedelics and west coast harmonies. A friendship that sees them nurturing each other’s musical talents, with Niamh Rowe teaching Fiona Skelly how to play guitar, and Fiona teaching Niamh to sing. It’s the start of Sundowners’ story.

Meanwhile, halfway across the world Fiona’s brother Alfie’s formative years are spent touring and working with band’s like The Coral, Arctic Monkeys, and Oasis. Surrounded by some of Britain’s best songwriters & musicians from the age of 16, it’s an inspirational time, one that moulds his ambitions. In-between tours and back in Hoylake, he informally adopts both Niamh and Fiona who instantly become the group’s front women, the talented trio then go in search of the missing pieces, bassist Tim Cunningham, and drummer Jim Sharrock.

Alfie, Fiona and Niamh continued to develop and hone their songwriting skills, gathering a melting pot of influences such as the Velvet Underground, The Byrds, The Bangles, Air and The White Stripes.

Back in Alfie’s bedroom, the 5 piece began work producing a string of demos including Hummingbird, a modern psych-pop number, they catch the ear of James Skelly who, impressed by the quality and potential of the group puts the band into the studio, before releasing the track as their debut release on his new label Skeleton Key Records.
On the road the band go from strength to strength with headline shows across the UK. There are also successful support slots with The Coral and Cat’s Eyes, plus an appearance at All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival, which helps them add to an ever-growing fan base. As their live reputation builds they clinch a coveted Glastonbury Festival 2013 slot on the BBC Introducing Stage, and NME name them as one of the Top 20 new bands to watch at the festival.
They spend the winter holed away in a Liverpool studio perfecting their infectious blend of rock & roll and psychedelic folk-rock, sounding like Melody Echo Chamber jamming with The Black Keys.

With the new Medicine EP ready to go, an album in tow, and a label that believes they’re the most exciting young band to come out of Liverpool since days of the Bandwagon. Sundowners are ready to take the year by storm.

Baked A La Ska are the “heavy heavy sound” of Manchester ska; an 11 piece band of assembled oddballs and pranksters brought together by keyboardist and wizard, Mr John Ellis.

Baked A La Ska are fronted by an un-holy trio of singers: Mr Frank “the Skank” (smooth Sinatra vocals), Tommy Robot (MC) and the soft lilt and harmonica magic of Robin Sunflower (vegan). Baked A La Ska feature one of the tightest rhythm sections in Manchester with the “chops to make you drop”.

Their sound has already taken audiences and clubs across the region by storm inspiring late night parties and frenzied dancefloor action. It’s a massive, uplifting and raucous mix of spooky originals with an unusual line in covers (each featuring potentially a worse pun than the last).

Come down, drop in and drop out- dish out some good old free lovin’ music and revell like you don’t care about anything except world peace anymore.

Bridging the gap between the intensity and momentum of a rock band, and the clinical electro loops of dance floor hypnosis, Chemistry Lane surf waves of paranoia that redirect your gaze toward the illusion, like slight of hand in reverse.

Influences range far and wide from shoegaze and orchestral post-rock bands like Slowdive, Spiritualized and Godspeed! You Black Emperor, to new wave groups such and Talking Heads and Echo and the Bunnymen.  Recent appreciation for bands such as Deerhunter and The Phantom Band have allowed the group to unlock a new direction.

Chemistry Lane combine the dreaminess of experimental indie with a layered instrumental depth of sound that results in powerful, almost hypnotic melodies and warm spine tingling atmospheres.

The Hexmen [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

The Hexmen

The band was founded by frontman vocalist and harmonica player George Hexman in the late 70s, joining forces with major movers and shakers of the Liverpool music scene. Throughout the 80s and 90s, The Hexmen line-up was a shifting collaboration of local luminaries including members of The Las, Edgar Jones (The Stairs, Oasis, Paul Weller), the Boo Radleys, Elvis Costello (Alan Mayes/Rusty), Electrofixion (Echo and the Bunnymen), Cast and Dr Phibes among others, side projects included Los Rackerteeros ( Charlie Whitney from supergroup Family) and Film soundtracks .

Although they have always been known as a blues band, the Hexmen’s material is not that easy to categorise. The band’s music is blues based certainly but the defining quality of the Hexmen has always been energy with an aggressive, indie edge and a psychedelic undercurrent that lends extra dimensions to the music. Notwithstanding George’s historic links with the 80s and 90s Liverpool music scene, the current band members have an exciting pedigree. George himself, vocals (and a much sought after session blues harp player), has recorded with with some of the most significant indie bands of the past 20 years.

On guitar is Colin Guthrie is one of Merseyside’s & UK’s foremost blues guitarists and has played alongside some of the greats including Steve Gibbons. His former bands include Gran Torino, Stadium, Cherokee and Wild Spirit. Influences include Ritchie Blackmore, Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonamassa.

Bass player Mike Cain and  Mat Shaw on drums. Mike & Mat have gigged together for over 25 yrs before joining The Hexmen, their former bands include AgentX, PTP, Fallen Empire, Razor & The Cactus Elves amongst others
