Dreaming Of Kate – Kate Bush Tribute [+]

Kate Bush Tribute 1

“Dreaming of Kate” is the brainchild of Haarlem (NL) based singer Maaike Breijman and Liverpool (UK) based drummer Paul Tsanos. They met at the Belfast Taste and Music Fest in 2010, where Maaike performed some Kate Bush songs on what was her first performance abroad. Ambitious Maaike was looking for more shows abroad and managed to kick off her career in Liverpool. When her busy Holland based musicians’ schedules couldn’t fit the rising demand abroad anymore, Maaike started working with a Liverpool based band instead, though adding Dutch backing vocalist Jerney Molenaar to her line up.

In 2013, the band toured across the UK and Holland with what was then known as “Wow – A Celebration of the Music and Artistry of Kate Bush”, and received standing ovations in all 14 theatres, among which the famous Shepherds Bush Empire (London) and Royal Theatre Carré (Amsterdam). Their audience included members of the Kate Bush fan club in both countries, and celebrities like Bonehead (Oasis), Vinny Peculiar, Johnny Robinson (X-Factor), and Del Palmer.

After splitting – due to various reasons – with the producer of “Wow” (who then got offered a production job for Kate’s own Before the Dawn show), the full band and lead singer Maaike decided to continue the project. With the conviction that performing Kate Bush’ music requires dedication to the look and performance, the band and Maaike developed Dreaming of Kate as a theatrical show. This means Maaike is not just a lead singer: she sings, dances, plays the piano and puts herself through a number of costumes changes. Maaike says: “The concept of the show can be a bit confusing. People expect us to be a regular band since we are a band. But with all the costume changes, dance routines and props we are more than that. On the other hand, we are not performing a musical or any particular story, which is what people expect when you say ‘costumes’ and ‘stage props’. We aim to perform, well… a fantasy, a dream.”

What others think of us“The moves, the dancing, the costumes, the facial expressions were all as you’d imagine how Kate would perform a concert as Maaike morphed into Kate. She was completely uninhibited, free and believable and the audience loved her.”
(Yvonne Delahaye – uktheatre.net)
“Yes, once again, Maaike succeeds in performing Kate’s music in a way that makes you see how Kate herself would do it. Even the fans who saw the show back in 1979 confirm that.”
(Kate Bush fanclub – The Netherlands)
“Breijman is quite a marvel. Capturing Bush in her dance moves, voice and look – sometimes it’s quite scary.”
(Jo-Anne Rowney -getbucks.co.uk)“When she tours again I order you to do your utmost to see her. Sell your Granny, send your kids to sweep chimneys, do whatever it takes just make sure you are there for Maaike’s next tour. That’s an order ok!”
(justwilliam1959 – wordpress)“’Wow! Wow! Wow! Unbelievable. Ooh yeah you’re amazing, we think you’re incredible!’ Never have song lyrics seemed more apt than watching Maaike Breijman perform as Kate Bush”

Septmebr the 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day and we at ye mighty ship Telford’s are not one to miss such momentous occasions and have taken the whole idea very seriously. Last year we saw Mark Radcliffe and his band perform to a full ship of pirateers, wenches & lads & lass’s dressed in full seafaring regalia. This year we expect even more and have press ganged The Wee Bag Band into putting on a show of traditional shanties and ceilidh jigs.

Pirates

Live Music From

The Wee Bag Band

The Wee Bag Band consist of 5 musicians Paul Bassom, Rory McGough, Steve Owen, Julian Anderson & Alan Colinson. From time to time they have the odd (sometimes very odd) musician join them.

Paul & Rory met in back in 1993 and as both of them have a keen interest in music they soon hit it off. Problem was that at that time Rory was based in Denbigh while Paul was based in London. In 1998 Paul moved up to Denbigh allowing them more time to develop their musical style. Since 2001 they have been playing in pubs & clubs in and around North Wales. Wanting to create a more dynamic sound Alan joined in 2003.

With the introduction of Jim the Flute early in 2007 followed by Jules the Fiddle later that year and more recently Steve the bass the band were often seen out & about as a 5 & 6 piece and capable of delivering the unique energetic sound called Irish Music

Oh.! and the name…….? Well lets just say we were under the influence of something a tad iffy when we came up with that one and were stuck with it now

Open Mic Session with Ashley Fayth [+]

Free Entry

After a wonderful debut open mic session in July Ashley Fayth is back hosting another relaxed acoustic session where you can showcase your talents on the Telford’s stage. Slots available from 8pm.

Ashley Fayth 1

Ashley Fayth’s whimsical songs are thoughtfully crafted and delivered, but with the simplicity and natural ease “of a clear river over rounded stones”, according to talent agent and industry guru Robert Singerman.

Hailing from the island of Newfoundland, a hotbed for some of Canada’s best storytellers and creative writers, the award-winning songstress delivers musical short stories saturated with colourful imagery and poetic prose.

David Farrell of Canadian entertainment blog NewCanadianMusic.com credits Fayth with having “a voice as clear and as beautiful as Waterford crystal,” and with “writing songs that are guiless enough to make you smirk and blush. In fact, it is not hard to call her sweetheart”.

Cleverly knit lyrics, playful rhythms, and flawless vocal delivery come together to form beautiful songs that are at once moving, witty, thought-provoking, and entertaining – a quirky yet enticing synthesis of the earthy and the ethereal.

And although Ashley’s dark side does surface in some of her more sombre and seductively haunting renditions, her sound is still overwhelmingly playful, refreshingly poppy, and irreproachably sweet.

The Newfie songbird moved to the UK last year to begin her Master’s thesis on The Importance of Green Space in 18thCentury British Literature but “got distracted” and wrote and recorded her single “Peanut Butter” which immediately picked up songwriting awards from both Universal Music and the Canadian Songwriters Association, leading Ashley to put her academic career on hiatus while she completed the album, Wonder Wonder.

Songs from Wonder Wonder were featured on BBC Radio 2, CBC Radio, and on more than 100 regional and national stations worldwide, at one point charting on college radio stations in the USA. “Peanut Butter” was also included alongside The Civil Wars and Los Lonely Boys on a compilation released by Inspire Entertainment.

Recently, Ashley has played showcases at CMJ in New York, South by Southwest in Austin, SoundCity in Liverpool, and Canadian Music Week in Toronto, and has been touring independently, in addition to representing Canada on theInternational Songwriters Tour, in the UK and North America.

Ashley is currently in the process of writing material for her new EP, I am the Bird scheduled to be released later this year.

Wonder Wonder is available for purchase in Ashley’s shop, on iTunes, and from all other major online music distributors. Visit Ashley’s website and join the mailing list to receive free downloads, news, and exclusive material.

2nd Album ‘Several Wolves’ released 11th August 2014 on Owlet Music

Trwbador are Angharad and Owain, an electro – folk – rave duo from West Wales.  Half Welsh / half Dutch, their eponymous debut album was shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize and they have earned airplay on BBC Radio 1, 6Music and Radio Wales.

Their second album, the recently released ‘Several Wolves’, was Album of the Day on BBC 6Music and has received glowing reviews from such authoritative sources as MixMag, The Quietus and ‘QMagazine.

Trwbador know how to construct a full-on listening experience.

The Quietus

It’s grand, deep and melancholic, and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to see them as A Welsh Little Dragon or SBTRKT.” 8/10

Mixmag

A stunning record.****

Q Magazine

An absolute beauty of an album.” 8/10

Artrocker

Their music is unfettered in its adventurousness, blurring influences from a disparate palette of Broadcast, Pentangle, Cornelius and Diplo. It’s wonderful, experimental pop music that, like the best pop music, combines immediacy with convention-warping innovation and technological curiosity.

Apart from a couple of notable collaborations (with the legendary Cornershop and rising UK hip hop star Essa), the band are resolutely DIY, releasing all of their records on their own label, Owlet Music.

They share all songwriting and producing duties equally and have been catching the attention of journalists, DJs and musos alike since 2010.

Dan Amor grew up and lives in deepest Snowdonia. His understated music is a blend of folk, Americana and 60’s pop.  His songs have received airplay on BBC Radio 1, 2, 3 and 6Music. Support slots have included Aqualung, The Proclaimers and Billy Bragg. A song he penned for former band Gabrielle 25 (named after a typewriter), ‘Every Little Thing I Say Gets You Down’, was played by John Peel.

Dan enjoyed a brief stint as bassist for Infinity Chimps – John Lawrence’s band (founder member of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci), before setting up independent label Recordiau Cae Gwyn in 2008.

Current album, the Welsh and English language ‘Rainhill Trials’, is receiving regular airplay on BBC 6Music, Radio 3, Radio Wales and Radio Cymru. His mum, Yvonne, who produces all artwork for the label, painted album covers for The Kinks and Long John Baldry during the 70’s.

“Atmospheric Welsh language contemporary folk.”

Lothar Kopari, BBC Radio 3

“pretty cool… loads of interesting sounding musicians”

Cerys Matthews, 6Music

“a set of evenings dedicated to genuinely brilliant  music.”

Ian Hughes, Daily Post

Crackling Vinyl began in November 2011 as an excuse for music enthusiasts, Adam Walton, Ben ‘Soundhog’ Hayes and Elin Bach to play their favourite records in their favourite music venue (Telford’s Warehouse, Chester) far away from the weekend madness of endless requests for the kind of R&B that wasn’t pressed on Chess Records.

Crackling Vinyl evolved to encompass live music. They would bring unique and acclaimed artists to Chester for the first time, at a very affordable price: a high quality watermark in a city keen to experience the best, upcoming touring artists.

Previous live guests at Crackling Vinyl have included: Sweet Baboo, Gallops, Paper Aeroplanes, Katell Keineg, Alun Tan Lan, Gulp, Zervas & Pepper, Euros Childs, Cate Le Bon, Laura J. Martin, Y Niwl, Colorama, Richard James, H. Hawkline, Mowbird, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Toy Horses, T.G.
