Silent Sleep

Silent Sleep

Silent Sleep is the current music project of Christopher McIntosh, who played in Liverpool bands 28 Costumes and Hallo…I Love You! Until April 2010, when he moved himself to Berlin. He returned to Liverpool at the start of 2012 and set about putting together a merry band of good folk.

He has recorded 2 EPs both consisting of demos recorded in Berlin . The EPs are called ‘This Scissor Disaster Parts 1 and 2.

The first 2 EPs can be bought from Silent Sleep’s bandcamp page which is here

http://silentsleep.bandcamp.com/

In September 2012 a successful pledge music campaign meant that the debut album, ‘Walk Me To The Sea’, could be recorded and was released in May 2013.

It’s available to buy here http://silentsleep.bandcamp.com/

In January 2014 Silent Sleep signed a deal with Red Touch Media whilst out in Salt Lake City playing shows at The Sundance Film Festival. A new album will be released towards the end of 2014/start of 2015.

Silent Sleep play sparkly sad and darkly romantic songs with searingly honest lyrics about this and that.

Vera Van Heeringen

Vera Van Heeringen

For many years Vera has developed a reputation as a strong back-up player on guitar, bass and fiddle in several Cajun and old-time bands. She is well known for her big guitar sound and has worked on the acoustic music scene in Europe for the last decade. Vera will pick up any instruments new to her in order to get the sound and feel of projects she’s involved in. Vera is originally from Holland, but now settled in the hills of northern Powys, Wales.

She was a member of the New Rope String Band for over five years and charmed many an audience across the country. The straight-faced guitar-picking lady has now left the comedy to one side.

Vera’s debut album ‘Standing Tall’ (she is Dutch, after all) is receiving rave reviews. This time we get to hear her do her own songs and tunes. With rhythm at the heart of the music, honest and touching lyrics, melodies always that slight bit crooked. The drive of old-time, the clarity of bluegrass and the swing and ease of musicians having a great time. Recorded at home on vintage microphones by the great Andy Bell, with and among great musical friends and collaborators, good food and good times, the fruits of the project are great and lush. Real music with a raw energy.

Ian Prowse & Amsterdam + support Me and Deboe [+]

£10 Tickets

see

Ian Prowse releases his brand new single Lest We Forget.

The single is released on October 19th to both commemorate and mourn the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of Ypres. A battle which saw the British Army suffer losses that resulted in the decision of mass conscription for the young men of Britain.

As with all Ian Prowse tracks it’s a song from the heart as he explains “ I wanted to release a single right in the middle of the Commemorations/Celebrations which told the truth about the First World War, and not the idea being peddled in certain circles that all those young men died for a just and worthwhile cause.”

The single is taken from Who Loves Ya Baby, the first ever solo album by one of the UK’s finest singer/songwriters, Liverpool’s own Ian Prowse. Ian has described the song as “a real Liverpool song for a real Liverpool girl” and is about the day his baby daughter Rosalita was christened in St Nicks, the sailors’ church by the city’s Pier Head. Not exactly a religious man, Ian squared it with himself by imagining that she was being baptised in the Mersey, that and the fact that they took her straight to the Cavern afterwards for a “rock ‘n’ roll” ceremony.

‘I Did it For Love’ was the new single from ‘Who Loves Ya Baby’. Receiving airplay on BBC Radio 2 And BBC Radio 6 Music. Both Janice Long and Chris Hawkins instantly fell in love with the single which is an homage to the late Gil Scot Heron, the black American poet and singer who passed away in 2011. Blasting in with a killer horn riff ‘I Did it For Love’ also boasts the chorus of 2014. Vital, undeniable and straight from the heart as one of Prowse’s best ever single to date. Who Loves Ya Baby follows on from the success of The Best of Ian Prowse, a compilation of his work with the band’s Pele and Amsterdam, which was released to critical acclaim in 2012.

“Rousing, Inspirational” – Daily Mirror

“The man who gave us the classic Does this train stop on Merseyside does it again”   Elvis Costello

“An epic album, 9/10!”  (Ian McNabb)

“Passionate, engrossing, evocative” – Record Collector

Ian Prowse, often called the “Scouse Springsteen”, is best known for his work as main man with the groups, Pele (1990s) and the 7-piece group, Amsterdam (2000s). One of his most famous songs, Amsterdam’s  Does This Train Stop On Merseyside, was a huge favourite of the late DJ John Peel – he featured the song on his last ever Festive Fifty and it has been well documented that it often reduced him to tears on air. The song has gone on to be covered by many others, including Christy Moore, Miles Hunt and Ian McNabb.

Me and Deboe

Me and Deboe 2

“There are no tricks here [with] the duo’s driving riffs and sumptuous vocal harmonies effortlessly intertwined to devastating effect..” Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music, Fresh on the Net.ME AND DEBOE move effortlessly between powerful chords and delicate, percussive riffs to bring a stripped back and distinctly original sound to both their own music and their cover versions.

Sharply observed, frequently witty lyrics are their trademark and brought to life by Mercy’s strong, raw contralto and Sarah’s softer, blue-eyed soul.
Both solo musicians in their own right, the duo has seen their star steadily ascend from its 2011 beginnings in Northwest England.

The duos music has taken them to a range of events both on an international stage and across the UK, appearing at notable venues including North London’s iconic Proud Camden and Earl Court’s The Troubadour; The Acoustic Festival of Britain; The Liverpool Music Awards; BBC Radio Merseyside; and supporting Miles Kane.

In May, ME AND DEBOE returned from a festival in Spain and embarked on a tour of Canada and America in August 2014, performing at The American Folk Art Museum and The Rockwood in New York, and continuing on to performances in Nashville,  Memphis, with a live performance on New Orleans WWOZ Radio station.

They released their debut EP ‘ME and Deboe’ in 2013, with the single I For You Gave making BBC 6 Music Fresh On The Net: Fresh Faves selection.

Their second EP ” Here They Come”, produced by Teige Maddrell and Mastered By Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios, London, is now available online.

The Tea Street Band 1

The Tea Street Band have made many friends in 2013. Their recent single Lost For Words made the playlist at XFM and was chosen by Huw Stephens as BBC Intro Single of the week. These plaudits are richly deserved for this five piece from Liverpool.

Recent shows have been ticket only and have caused twitter storms and sweaty dancefloors. This year has seen the band touring with Inspiral Carpets and playing shows with The Charlatans. They have also played the main stage at Festivals and are now geared up to release their first self titled album in 2014.

Twitter has been key to the band communicating with their fans.  Along the way the lads have received praise from Lennox Lewis and seen their videos played on Channel 4. All from the magic of the bands relentless conversations!

The band are Timo Tierney, Nick Otaegui, James Albertina, Lee Smith and Dom Allen. Together they have toured the world this year. Their shows in New York, Sydney, Melbourne and the Republic of Ireland have seen them build a fanbase across the globe. Now the band are ready to extensively tour the UK in 2014. They are building fans across the way from Janice Long on Radio 2 to John Kennedy of XFM. They have picked up plays along the way from Dave Monks, Jo Good, Clint Boon and Rob Da Bank. The Tea Street Band cross over genres and have the spirit of the dancefloor. Some of their songs are becoming anthems across Merseyside and perhaps only a matter of time before the ears of the rest will be singing their songs…

John Earls, Daily Star

“Think of 808 state having a meeting mid channel to hear some French electronic by Space Disco You need to check these out soon – Come on were British we love a cuppa”

Dave Monks, BBC Introducing

“A glacial slab of guitar-led house that flies us to an Ibizan terrace for cocktails with The Whitest Boy Alive and Aeroplane. It’s really quite beautiful”

Neil Condron, High Voltage

“A shared love of rave culture is present in their output – it’s soaring, distinctly Balearic and sounds as much European as it is rooted in English rock and roll”

Peter Guy, Liverpool Echo

“Their unique sound consisting of straight forward rock n roll combined with heavy drum and bass, techno and House music creates a fusion that can only be described as euphoric; carrying everyone along on the wave of euphoria sweat was dripping everywhere as the five guys sent the crowd delirious. No words can describe the effect this band has on a crowd, and to witness it is magic in action.”

Merry Hell [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

merryhelllivecolour

Merry Hell: A Northern based 7-piece offering blistering folk/rock with a message. Uplifting, inspiring and insightful in equal measure with an interesting past and a promising future.

Launched in 2011, Merry Hell combine male and female vocals, mandolin, electric guitars, bass, drums and keyboards with an ambition to revolutionise the genre.

Musically they range from the anthemic to the intimate whilst combining lyrical playfulness with astute observation and comment, they offer your favourite songs that you haven’t yet heard plus a live experience that is both infectious and inspiring.  A band with a history, a pedigree and most importantly, a promise for the future.

Merry Hell has risen phoenix-like from the embers of 90’s cult rabble-rousers The Tansads.  – for many who knew them, the finest band never to make it BIG – a quasi folk-punk-rock orchestra that enjoyed a career spanning 5 albums and countless tours. Brought together again in 2010, for 3 triumphant reunion gigs at their spiritual home of The Citadel, St Helens, the venue for their celebratory live album, ‘Drag Down the Moon’.

As the dust settled on the reunion shows, the decision had been made that a revitalized band should take the spirit of The Tansads forward into a new era. So Merry Hell was raised.

The Kettle brothers, John, Bob, and Andrew are back, joined by John’s wife, Virginia, who brings both acoustic guitar and the perfect vocal foil to Andrew’s gravelly delivery. Former Tansads, Lee Goulding on keyboards and drummer Andy Jones consolidate the line-up, completed by bassist Andrew Dawson.

Known for their original, emotionally charged and anthemic songs, this band are just as much at home producing exquisitely crafted recordings in the studio as they are in their high-energy assaults on the souls of live audiences.

Nick Harper [+]

£10 Tickets

see

nick-harper-press-photo-06m

Son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper, Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. Having played the guitar from the age of 10 and surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, it was no surprise when Nick made his recording debut on his father’s Whatever Happened to Jugula? in 1985.

Nick’s talent and energy entranced Roy’s fans and it was inevitable that he would begin touring and recording in his own right. The 1994 EP Light at the End of the Kennel was swiftly followed by his powerful 1995 debut long player Seedprompting The Independent to describe him as “hugely talented”.

In 1996 Nick met Squeeze frontman and songwriter Glenn Tilbrook. Tilbrook was so impressed that he offered Nick a job playing with and supporting Squeeze and promptly signed Nick to his own label, Quixotic Records. Following tours in the UK, USA and Japan, Nick recorded the 1998 album Smithereens with Tilbrook as producer. This album and subsequent 40 date solo tour, including dates in New York and Glastonbury, confirmed Nick as a formidable talent in his own right. “If imagination, energy and bags of talent were the only factors in making a successful pop career, few would deny that Squeeze man Glenn Tilbrook has backed a winner in Nick Harper…Splendid stuff” – MOJO magazine. He teamed up with Tilbrook again on 2000?s highly acclaimed album Harperspace. This is the album that confirmed his position at the forefront of a new generation of British Acoustic Performers.“Nick Harper has a quality that stands head and shoulders above anything else you are likely to encounter…The Verse Time Forgot from the new album ‘Harperspace’ is as close to a perfect song as you are likely to get.” Edinburgh Evening News

To call Nick a superlative singer/songwriter could put his highly lauded guitar talent in the shade, and to call him a guitarist’s guitarist might slight his distinctive, soulful voice and passionate songs. Not forgetting the wild ride that is one of his live shows – from personal introspection to biting political satire via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud. He often segues from his own compositions to well-loved covers he makes his own – he takes on Presley, Zappa, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, Monty Python and Public Enemy (yes, on an acoustic guitar). He also has the alarming ability to break guitar strings almost by sheer force of will… and then change them without dropping a beat. For over a decade, he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with this heady mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado. His talent and showmanship were recognised in 2003 with a (Glasgow) Herald Fringe Angel award for excellence in live music during his Edinburgh Festival run. “Harper has so much musicianship in him that it just leaks out all over the place.” The Times

After 6 studio albums, a double live CD and 2 EPs (including Instrumental, a stunning display of his guitar talents), Nick’s work is still as fresh and vital as that of his first solo release in 1994. The recently released sixth studio album,Miracles For Beginners, was a return to a more stripped-down acoustic based style, from the folk tale of the meeting of King Henry 8th and Francis 1st in 1520 in The Field Of The Cloth Of Gold. to a beautiful latin tinged paean to the the Bolivian President Evo Morales in Evo. But, as with his highly personal 2004 “family album” Blood Songs, he still has time to sing about the most important things in his world – family, friends, love, life.

2010 sees the release of Nicks 10th CD The Last Guitar. An eclectic mix of 12 songs showing off Nicks unabashed individuality and bold choices allied to a new maturity. Included are a gumshoe detective story called Pop FictionOne of the 38, a dedication to the trekkers on the Everest trail and Silly Daddy, which has the recording debut of his daughter Lily.

Between solo albums, Nick tours with a vengeance. In the first 8 months of 2005 alone, he’d traversed the UK from Devon to the most northerly point in Scotland, along with 2 dates in Holland and acclaimed sets at Glastonbury, Beautiful Days (with his band Sleeper Cell), Oysterband’s Big Session and other festivals including 2 tsunami benefit gigs in Thailand.

Plan 9 from Harperspace was the spring tour of 2007 promoting the new DVD ‘Love Is Music‘ – a ‘rockumentary’ style film with a selection of Nick’s best loved songs recorded in 5.1 sound.

Also recently released was Nick’s first single for download on iTunes. Taken from the CD ‘Miracles For Beginners‘ and called ‘Blue Sky Thinking‘ it quickly went to no.1 in iTunes downloads. All proceeds from the single were donated to the Love Hope Strength Foundation. Nick had just returned from Nepal after setting a new world record for the highest gig on earth at Kala Pattar above Mt. “As close to the real thing as you’ll get” Woody Woodmansey (Bowie’s ex-drummer)

Absolute Bowie

5 piece Absolute Bowie are Europe’s finest live ‘David Bowie’ tribute band perform all the great hits from Bowie’s back catalogue with uncanny accuracy. Their energetic stage show goes from A to Z (Absolute Beginners to Ziggy!) with Stations to Station in between.

Absolute Bowie 2

Absolute Bowie were formed through a chance meeting and a mutual love of David Bowie’s music.
After first conceiving the idea of a Bowie tribute we needed to create a dynamic in order to accomplish our goal. To create the authentic feel, we needed the right musicians. We searched far and wide – our musical journey was finally nearing its end as we gathered our spaceboys one by one. Once assembled our dynamic grew day by day.
Choosing the material from db’s back catalogue was difficult given that there are so many great songs in his vast repertoire. The only unanimous decision was to leave out ‘The Laughing Gnome’. Even the man himself feigned deafness when fans requested the ’song’.

Baskery 1

Baskery are three sisters from Sweden, the sound is all about turning music on its head, blending the straight forwardness of punk with the subtlety of roots and Americana

Baskery will be touring their latest release “LITTLE WILD LIFE” in the UK in the Autumn of 2014.

No matter where they go in the world, people tell the sisters that they’ve never heard or seen anything like it, that they have a completely unique sound and perform with what seems to be an inexhaustible energy. That’s Baskery’s aim, to never stop surprising. Baskery is a band built on what three people can do together. The music is not to be confused with country or bluegrass just because they play a double bass, a six string banjo and acoustic guitar.

The three sisters can’t recall when or why they started playing, the music’s always just been there. “Performing live has become the most natural thing to us”. That’s where the high energy level on stage hails from, a pure and reckless love to the art of performing music.

“Little Wild Fire is loaded with trenchant vitality” – 4/5 stars, Gareth Hayes, R2

“A jewel of an album, it grows and grows with each listen as the voices and the arrangements bury themselves as ear worms. ” – Keith Hargreaves, Americana UK

“Little Wild Life … is alive, exciting, melodic”. 5/5 – Paul Riley, Country Music People

“Frenetically energetic…a distinctively individual band sound primed to hone in on the mainstream” – MOJO (Colin Irwin)

My Darling Clementine

One of the many definitions of harmony is..  agreement; accord; harmonious relations, so it is a sweet irony that in Country Music, the joining of two voices should so often be used to sing about disharmony.  Songs of betrayal, regret, anger, guilt, revenge and hurt.

But it is that contradiction which draws us to this music. 2 people, singing to each other, about each other,  while staring directly into each others eyes.  As listeners we become voyeurs to something so personal. Like eavesdropping neighbours tuning into a domestic. We are at once curious, sad, compelled but yet unable to turn away.

The classic country duets were undoubtedly at their peak in the late 60s and 1970s, the likes of George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton and Porter Waggoner, Johnny & June and many more. Fast forward 40 years and those timeless themes are alive and well in the hands , and voices of……..My Darling Clementine (aka Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish)

Michael Weston King, the seasoned troubadour, and the former leader of U.K. Alt Country pioneers The Good Sons (who MOJO dubbed “England’s very own Uncle Tupelo…”,) is widely seen as one of Britain’s finest singer songwriters. He has made 10 solo albums and 4 with The Good Sons. Always on the road, both solo and touring with the likes of Nick Cave, John Cale, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Roger McGuinn. His collaborations with Chris Hillman, Ron Sexsmith, Jackie Leven and the legendary Townes Van Zandt (who cut his own version of Michael’s song Riding The Range), have only enhanced his considerable musical reputation.

Lou Dalgleish is quite simply one of, if not THE finest female singers in the UK. She has been praised by, and worked with the likes of Elvis Costello, Bryan Ferry, The Brodsky Quartet, and many more. From 1993 – 2000 she released 4 albums (including the acclaimed Live at Ronnie Scotts)  that showed off her unique songwriting,  her stunning vocals and unique interpretation of other works. A long time Costello fan she can also be seen appearing in the show, “They Call Her Natasha” a stage show based on his life and music.

Both King and Dalgleish are no strangers to successful, independent music careers but after 10 years of marriage, the two turned their attention towards a joint project. The result was  How Do You Plead?, an album that took the Country / Americana world by storm. Produced by Nick Lowe producer Neil Brockbank and featuring the cream of British players, including Geraint Watkins and Martin Belmont it garnered incredible critical acclaim. The debut single,100,000 Words became a BBC Radio 2 hit, and the band and album went on to win awards on both sides of the Atlantic.

“This is a great album. A finely crafted all original tribute to the classic country duet”
The Guardian

”One of the most exquisitely pained American country albums of the year comes from this British couple”
New York Daily News – Top Ten Album of the week

“A baker’s dozen of originals that sound like they came straight out of the June/Johnny-Emmylou/Gram-Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood catalogs. This is as authentic as anything out of Nashville or Texas…A batch of superb C&W corkers.”
American Songwriter, USA  **** 4/5

“Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the best British country record ever!”
Duncan Warwick, Editor – Country Music People.

“Truly a great record”
Chris Hillman (The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers)

“Lou has the most stunning voice. I LOVE it”
Graham Norton (BBC Radio 2)

“You would swear blind this albums cuts are lifted straight from the pages of some long-lost country songbook”
BBC on-line music reviews

After a year of touring  the UK, America, Canada and Scandinavia, Oct 2013 sees My Darling Clementine release their 2nd album, “The Reconciliation?”   Recorded at the renowned Sheffield studio, Yellow Arch and produced by Colin Elliot  (Richard Hawley, Duane Eddy, Jarvis, Kylie,) it features 12 new, stunning duets, plus special guest appearances from Kinky Friedman, The Brodsky Quartet  & The Richard Hawley band.

MDC will be on tour in Europe throughout the Autumn and Winter before heading back to the USA in March 2014.  Their live show is spectacular, and has been the highlight of many festivals these past 2 summers.

“Off the scale guys, what a show! Amazing song writing and musicianship. We loved it, a pleasure to have you.”
Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Belfast

“It was theatre, it was country music, it was rock ‘n’ roll”
Maverick *****5/5

Alun Cochrane

Alun Cochrane is a no-nonsense comedian who specialises in funny nonsense. Much of his comedy begins simply as something he’s seen, heard or felt in his own life, or in the street, or the kitchen, or anywhere and from that it blossoms into a highly amusing anecdote or a strange flight of fancy.

He has recently joined Frank Skinner’s Absolute Radio Show and can be heard every Saturday morning from 8am.

Alun has several television appearances to his name, most recently Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow he’s also often seen on Eight out of ten cats, Mock The Week,  and has appeared on Soccer A.M and Live At The Comedy Store.

Radio producers are also aware of Cochrane’s talent and he’s notched up various credits from Just A Minute, 4 Stands Up, and The Now Show to Clive Anderson’s Chat Room.

At the Edinburgh festival he’s performed 6 original solo stand-up shows in the last 7 years to critical and audience acclaim.

Alun has a number of corporate entertainment clients who appreciate the ability to tailor his act to a specific group whilst still being extremely amusing and original- he owns several suits (at least 4) and now he has a child is particularly happy to wear one of them for work of this nature. Perhaps less pleasing to him is discovering he is good at work in this sector just as an enormous economic downturn strikes. Hmm.

Danny McLoughlin

Danny McLoughlin

Somewhat a local hero, with an amiable confident stage presence and a well written set Danny delivers material with more than just an immediate pay-off line, preferring to take the joke one or two steps further. Confident enough to take a risk on stage he does so not to the detriment of the audience, keeping them laughing along or hanging on every word. A bright future surely awaits.
