Open Mic Session with Hanami [+]

Free Entry

Chester’s longest running open mic session is this week hosted by nomadic Hanami…

Hanami

We move from town to town, city to city, country to country, we mirror our audience as they mirror us

Free forming foundations, two swans drifting untouchably out to sea, harmonic beans on toast, from the sky to the ground, living on the floor, cross stitching lines across time, children dream whilst nuzzling the velvet bust, houses built out at sea, singing shantys for sanity, clarity, freedom, future, past and present, getting off easy, twanging bellies before the heavy brick, rushing blood and air, careering toward the unknown in the promised Eastern horizon.

Feet on peddles, hands clamped to the wheels ringing, hair trailing behind, paws pounding, tounge lolling, nose sniffing, down the road mama down the road, the hound is following.

We’ll get there in the end.

The Loose Kites [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Theloosekites

Imagine if you will a band. Not just any ordinary band, but a band cut from a different cloth.

A band with soul, whose sole mission is to infect the planet with love, with passion and with music to make you smile and make you think. Imagine, if you can, the loose kites.

With a unique and dynamic eight-piece line up, including members with diverse backgrounds, the kites represent something different. With a sound which includes elements of folk, pop, rock and more, the band relies not only on the staples of voice, guitar, bass and drums, but also brass, woodwind, strings and keys. Those additional elements make the distinctive kites sound a fuller one. That sound still accentuates the positive, with the focus very much on the groove, and the catchiness of the tunes. Harmonies abound, and melody is king.

The band has developed and adapted new elements into its core since being formed five years ago. After the release of their self-titled debut back in 2009, the band quickly picked up gigs, radio and an endorsement with the highly acclaimed Farida guitar company, alongside Oasis, Maximo Park, The Levellers and The Wombats. The company has hailed them as ‘…one of the most exciting folk acts this country has produced in recent years’.

Now the kites are moving forward with their brand new album, ‘Of Bricks And Brambles’. A marked progression from their debut, the album shows that the band are not afraid of expressing themselves in a variety of musical settings. Taking inspiration from local life on the terraced streets where they grew up, the album takes queues from far and wide, and transfers them into the band’s very special sound. The album is accompanied by a range of exciting and witty videos which will be used to promote forthcoming singles.

With an enviable live record, including headlining national festivals, the band’s shows have become legendary in their home area. Most recently rocking Telford’s Warehouse in Chester, the band are set for select UK and international dates in 2014.

The loose kites mix a strong sense of local tradition with an international outlook. Their music is good-time-low-down-good-fun, delivered within a timeless setting, of emotion and soulfulness. Make sure you are at the Telford’s Return, and are ready to dance and sing your heart out.

Polar States

Polar States

Polar States are a band who in the space of 6 short months have churned out a stadium worthy set from the confines of a Toxteth council flat.

Impressing and consequently working with a Grammy Award winning producer the lads have songs as varied as the emotions they are charged with, as the band wax lyrical about the ‘Roads We Used To Use’, ‘Dark Corners’ and everything in between.

The debut single, Concrete, released Monday 6th October, is 2 mins 51 seconds of raw ‘pushing back at the tides’ which take us all down to the cold concrete many people call home.

Paul, Josh, Phill and Mark are four everyday lads who are anything but when it comes to making music. Polar States is a shared dream, a way of propelling themselves from ordinary Northern life; glorifying it along the way.

The John Fairhurst Band [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

The wait is almost over… Two years after the release of the critically acclaimed ‘Hungry Blues’ EP which earned him a nomination for best song at The British Blues Awards with ‘The Snow Lies Deep’John Fairhurst is to release a new album called “Salt Water” in October. This is the first full length release with the backing of a full band. Helped by a small group of special guests, John’s unique voice and kaleidoscope of guitars take his music into unchartered waters; after mastering acoustic blues through his years on the road, this album welcomes the return of electric blues rock.

The new tracks were recorded between London’s historic Dean Street Studios and Bristol. Engineering and Production are by  Nathan Evans and old friend Alex Beitzke who also recorded and produced the  2012 “Hungry Blues” EP. Six songs of John have been selected to appear in Scoop Film‘s latest production “The beat beneath my feet” featuring Luke Perry, Lisa Dillon and Ewen MacIntosh. Amongst the tracks selected two are from the new album; “I’m coming Home” and “No Shelter”.

John fairhurst

Wigan native Fairhurst has been honing his craft on the road combining his passions for people and music for years. The result is an awe inspiring wall of sound rooted in his northern blues background with a gritty mournful deep-south attitude and a voice to carry it home. Introduced to Sarod Master K. Shridhar at the age of 5 when he stayed with his family, John’s music has a distinctly eastern feel, with influences from Shridar as well from his own travels through Asia. With a bottle-neck style blues referencing the likes of Son House and Bukka White, comparisons to the fingerpicking of John Fahey, a leaning towards the psychedelic 60’s rock of Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and the ever present influence of K. Sridhar and Indian raga, John’s music is a real melting-pot of diverse musical traditions freely hand picking tunes from the Mississippi to the Ganges. John Fairhurst truly epitomises the modern day wandering blues man. He has gone on to tour the globe and entertain crowds at illustrious festivals such as SXSX and Glastonbury  to name but a few. John’s enigmatic stories relayed through intense and original blues are all told using his trademark howling vocals; think Captain Beefheart meets Tom Waits.

John’s wanderlust character, lead him to New York in 2009 where he arrived with only a bag of clothes and his beloved resonator. He met a fellow blues player and proceeded to arrange and perform 14 sell out shows in a 15 days, a feat demonstrating what a gifted performer John truly is. Bare chested and tattooed (by monks in a Thai temple), when John Fairhurst walks onto a stage you know you are not only about to hear incredible blues, but the tale of one mans tireless journey leaving a lasting impression wherever he stops. With three independent releases under his belt, he garnered critical acclaim from the offset with The Guardian describing his 2008’s instrumental  debut album Joys of Spring’ as “Truly exquisite”. His following releases 2010’s ‘John Fairhurst Band’ and 2012’s Hungry Blues’ were also hailed in similar manner. Coupled with his tenacious attitude to touring and following a summer of explosive live shows both in the UK and Europe, John has built on previous festival appearances at GlastonburySXSWGreen Man and Edinburgh Festival to widen his audience with shows at Secret Garden PartyShambalaBoomtown. With residencies on the Harley Davidson European Festival and a tour with Johnny Winter now under the belt… 2014 looks bright in John Fairhurst‘s world with the awaited release of a full album with a new band and an electrifying new sound.

The new album was recorded between Bristol and London, with Nathan Evans engineering the Bristol sessions and Alex Bietzke producing at Dean Street in London. John is accompanied by old faithfuls Joe Strouzer on harp and Toby Murray on drums with the addition of new band member Tim Louden on Bass and Emma Divine on backing vocals. The new album is a full on electric blues experience with John’s unique voice and guitar playing refraining to no boundaries helped by a number of very special guests that will shortly be revealed.  The album was mixed by Alex Beitzke (Jamiroquai, Florence and The Machine, Nigel Kennedy) and is being mastered by Ray Staff (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Clash). The lads have already been showcasing the new songs at the Summer Festivals. The band on the road are a tight trio made up by John on Vocals and Guitars, Toby Murray on drums and Pete Episcopo on Bass.  This is the sound of modern British blues….

The Lewis Hamilton Band

From an early age Lewis listened to wide range of music. When he turned twelve years old, he was given a Squire Stratocaster™, his first electric guitar. Taking influence from great guitarists such as, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton, he quickly developed a passion for guitar led ‘Blues-Rock’ and spent hours every day learning tips and tricks from his idols. Over the years he has performed with such notable musicians as Aynsley Lister (for whom he filled in vocals at a live show), Ryan McGarvey, Henrik Freischlader, Alan Nimmo, Chantel McGregor and Ben Poole. martyn Joseph

Shades of Springsteen, John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews there may be – but he stands in his own right, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives.

Martyn Joseph is a powerful singer and songwriter gifted with the rare ability to speak to the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics. With a career spanning 30 years, 31 albums, over a half a million record sales and thousands of live performances, the versatility of his music touches genres of folk, rock, soul, folk funk and Americana, yet somehow all these labels cannot define the spirit of his music. Compared to Bruce Springsteen, John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews, he has created his own style and reputation as a mesmerising live performer. A unique talent driven by passion, social awareness and love for his trade, his music manages to empower and speak for the many.

Martyn was awarded Best Male Artist at the 2004 BBC Welsh Music Awards and in 2012 his song “There’s Always Maybe” won the best folk song category in the World Independent Music Awards. In addition to his 5 top 50 UK hits, the importance of his work has been recognised by programmes such as BBC 2’s prime time series on Singer/Songwriters. Social justice has an essential presence throughout his music, which has been recognised with various humanitarian awards and plaudits.

Concerned with making music that is relevant and vital to his audience, he engages with challenging narratives tackling the complexity of the human condition underpinned with a promise of hope. In his own words “Really what I do is to try and write songs that might step up and make some sense of a moment in time. A good song makes you feel like you’re not alone in the world.”

“Songs For The Coming Home”, his most recent studio album, is filled with snap shots and images from his personal journey. “At the heart of this record is the notion that we are always striving to return. Returning to a place of solace, understanding, compassion, a place of justice, mercy and peace. That despite the carnage around us we can still save the day.”

Upon the release of his last studio album BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris said “Martyn is one of our most intelligent writers. He gets better and better.” Described as a cinematic journey through continents via his trademark ‘one take’, up close sound with stunning instrumentation, “Songs For The Coming Home” resonates with raw performance. Incorporating this element of live presentation into the recording process, preserves the spirit of this charismatic live solo performer.

He has won the love of audiences from USA to Europe through an impressive number of live dates, and has previously toured with the likes of Art Garfunkel, Jools Holland, Ani DiFranco, Suzanne Vega, Mike and The Mechanics, Joan Armatrading, Celine Dion and Shirley Bassey. He is hailed as a raconteur weaving tales on topical concerns, as well as stories on the fragility of love, with a magical ability to reach out to his listeners through his passion and humour. Stunning reviews single him out as an unmissable solo performer whose music stays with you long after the show has ended.

Martyn Joseph. A unique talent driven by passion and love for his trade, continues to write, sing and play from the heart. It’s a road he’s been travelling for most of his life and, as he often tells his audience, ‘you keep turning up and so will I.’

PRESS QUOTES

Galleon Blast [+]

Galleon Blast

Press ganged into service by an unscrupulous gangmaster from the Spanish Main (well….Knutsford actually), the swarthy seadogs of Galleon Blast occasionally get shore leave to ply their raggle-taggle trade wherever folk will have them. With a selection of rum-soaked songs and shanties, the Blasters whip up a squally strumming storm to get all and sundry friggin’ in the riggin’. With traditional tunes and many a seafaring classic from The Dubliners, The Waterboys, The Pogues, Thin Lizzy, The Fisherman’s Friends and Ewan MacColl; you can be sure that these diddly diddly deck-hands will get feet tapping from the poop to the crow’s nest. Galleon Blast feature banjos, whistles, accordions and fiddles from members of The Family Mahone, Full House and Mark Radcliffe and Foes, including the pirate dj himself Mr.Radcliffe – the Jack Sparrow of the Radio 2 Folk Show. Actually, make that the Jack Duckworth of the Radio 2 Folk Show. So, it’s all aboard the good ship Blast for a full-on broadside of buccaneering beat.
