Thea Gilmore 2013

“Here’s to tonic, here’s to gin, here’s to sparks and here’s to gasoline…” You’re The Radio

We are lucky to have musicians like Thea Gilmore, musicians that want more from themselves and more from music than some pre-formed, whistle-friendly cud, something to chew on but never fully digest. In an age where artists – male and female – tend to be either hyper-sexualised or completely neutered, Gilmore is that rare creature, an actual adult with a heart and a soul, a grown up with an opinion. Thea Gilmore is a real person tackling the sort of issues real people deal with every day, only, unlike the rest of us, she tackles those issues with an utterly beautiful voice and songs that touch on folk and jazz and rock and Americana.

Not for no reason does Bruce Springsteen buy her records, do artistes ranging from Martha Wainwright to Mike Scott seek to collaborate with her, and not for no reason does Tom Waits’ celebrated percussionist Michael Blair appear on Murphy’s Heart, Gilmore’s tenth album – one that follows a sustained period of artistic and critical success.

Open Mic Session with Ashley Fayth [+]

Free Entry

Now becoming a regular host to our Open Mic nights Ashley Fayth brings a bit of Christmas Cheer to our weekly session. Slots available from 8pm.

Ashley Fayth 1

Ashley Fayth’s whimsical songs are thoughtfully crafted and delivered, but with the simplicity and natural ease “of a clear river over rounded stones”, according to talent agent and industry guru Robert Singerman.

Hailing from the island of Newfoundland, a hotbed for some of Canada’s best storytellers and creative writers, the award-winning songstress delivers musical short stories saturated with colourful imagery and poetic prose.

David Farrell of Canadian entertainment blog NewCanadianMusic.com credits Fayth with having “a voice as clear and as beautiful as Waterford crystal,” and with “writing songs that are guiless enough to make you smirk and blush. In fact, it is not hard to call her sweetheart”.

Cleverly knit lyrics, playful rhythms, and flawless vocal delivery come together to form beautiful songs that are at once moving, witty, thought-provoking, and entertaining – a quirky yet enticing synthesis of the earthy and the ethereal.

And although Ashley’s dark side does surface in some of her more sombre and seductively haunting renditions, her sound is still overwhelmingly playful, refreshingly poppy, and irreproachably sweet.

The Newfie songbird moved to the UK last year to begin her Master’s thesis on The Importance of Green Space in 18thCentury British Literature but “got distracted” and wrote and recorded her single “Peanut Butter” which immediately picked up songwriting awards from both Universal Music and the Canadian Songwriters Association, leading Ashley to put her academic career on hiatus while she completed the album, Wonder Wonder.

Songs from Wonder Wonder were featured on BBC Radio 2, CBC Radio, and on more than 100 regional and national stations worldwide, at one point charting on college radio stations in the USA. “Peanut Butter” was also included alongside The Civil Wars and Los Lonely Boys on a compilation released by Inspire Entertainment.

Recently, Ashley has played showcases at CMJ in New York, South by Southwest in Austin, SoundCity in Liverpool, and Canadian Music Week in Toronto, and has been touring independently, in addition to representing Canada on theInternational Songwriters Tour, in the UK and North America.

Ashley is currently in the process of writing material for her new EP, I am the Bird scheduled to be released later this year.

Wonder Wonder is available for purchase in Ashley’s shop, on iTunes, and from all other major online music distributors. Visit Ashley’s website and join the mailing list to receive free downloads, news, and exclusive material.

Big Gay Open Mic Session with Rusty Mahone [+]

Free Entry

Rusty 1

It’s just three days before we frantically rip open the gifts we have been anticipating all year, and, for our festive open mic we have again booked the extra festive Rusty Mahone to host the evening and maybe sing a song or two.

Rusty puts a lot of thought into planning his evenings, often drinking his fee many months before the gig as ideas are batted to and forth across the bar. Last year he was in a dark pagan mood reminding us that there was more to Christmas than the baby Jesus. He sang a dark scary song that ensured that Spring would come again. She did, (in the carpark, helped by the bouncers) and he was proved right. However, it was a little bit dark, so we’ve asked him to be happier this time. Therefore Chester’s answer to Demis Roussos has decided to get into his Christmas stockings, play with his elf and empty his sack  on the stage.

Rusty’s elf is 7 inches tall, and is a keyboard genius- you might have heard the amazing piano parts generated by his midi linked accordion- well in reality, that is actually Puk, the elf, who tends to become visible at times of festivity where beer is involved.

Rusty has decided in his very finite wisdom, that this year the way to festive happiness is a little bit of role reversal and a celebration of all that is different, so for the first time ever we at Telfords are proud to present our first Gay crossdressing Open Mike evening. There will be prizes for the best drag, and for any performers directly addressing issues of sexual intolerance. It can’t all be fun and smiles. However there will be a penalty for anyone singing carols or christmas cheese, so expect ‘chilli tequila russian roulette’, and ‘shut the box’.

We asked Rusty to comment on his decision to encourage homosexuality and reward crossdressing with alcohol. Rusty gave us this statement

“In my experience homosexuals need less encouragement than many. Their great taste in music allows me to cover the ‘Village People’, and that alone is cause for celebration. Crossdressing has always been an important part of Christmas- have you ever seen a picture of God or Jesus in trousers? Tonight will be a chance to get closer to God by feeling the wind where it doesn’t often blow if you’re a man, and  the ladies get to feel the relief of not having to shave for a month. As a monthly shaver myself, I can recommend it! So, please come along and join in the spirit- you might even get to play with my seven inch pianist.”

Will the elf actually turn up?

Is he really 7 inches tall or is Rusty exaggerating?

Does he really live in Rusty’s box and play a miniature piano?

Puk knows.

We know it will be a great night, and we hope to see you there in your glad-rags.

Anything can happen- and possibly will!

New Years

Arrrrrrrrrribaaaaaaa!

Buenos dias compadres.

Telford’s Warehouse New Years Eve parties have always been something to shout about but this year we’re throwing the biggest party to date.

CHESTER FIESTA is going to be the best Mexican party Chester has ever seen with a live Mariachi Band, piñatas, Mexican Aperitivos, margaritas and of course TEQUILA.

Mariachi Band

The Music – Pablo Juan Julio and his amigos are tipped as the best Mariachi Band to come to England. Forget your Doritos adverts as these guys bring to life the authentic sound of Mexico with traditional songs such as La Bamba, El Mariach Loco, Cielito Lindo plus load more and all dressed in traditional costume. BBC DJ Adam Walton will be providing the musical backdrop for the rest of the night with a host of rock ‘n’ roll, northern soul, and dance floor classics.

Don’t forget, this is a fancy dress party. Now we’ve all owned a sombrero at some point in time so there is no excuse for not dressing the part. Ponchos, big dirty mustaches & pointy shoes may not be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe so let your imagination run wild. The more loco the better!

To help get you in the ‘spirit’ of things Tequila will be on offer for £2 a shot (while stocks last) and upon entry for the early birds there will be a refreshing margarita cocktail. A Mexican menu will be available for those who rushed out and forgot to eat with a selection of Nachos, Burritos, Quesedilla & tacos.

Tickets are priced at £20 or a limited number are available @ £30 to include a plate of Mexican Aperitivos. They can be bought from Telford’s Warehouse or box office No. 01244 390 090 and are available online at www.seeticekts.com.

Don your ponchos light up that cigar and come shake your maracas!

Aperitivos menu – All the below is included within the price of a £30 ticket;
Mexican Cheese Fritters
Spiced King Prawn Tacos
Chicken Fajita
Chilli Beef Burrito
Tortilla Chips
Churro with cinnamon sugar
