Perhaps the best percussive guitar album we’ve ever heard” 5/5 – Total Guitar

Jon Gomm is an acoustic singer-songwriter with an incredible virtuoso guitar style, where he uses one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and sparkling melodies all at the same time, and combining styles from blues and jazz to rock and pop. The emphasis is still on the soulful vocals and songwriting however, and his original material is influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead.

Jim Bazley

James Bazley is a talented, enthusiastic and captivating fingerstyle guitarist from North Wales in the UK.

He has been playing the guitar since he was old enough to hold one in his hands. James originally studied classical guitar in great depth, before discovering that his real passion lay with the infinite and alluring possibilities that only fingerstyle guitar can afford. This followed from a chance encounter with Tommy Emmanuel, who challenged his entire world view of what was possible with six strings. This pivotal moment was to powerfully change his life forever. James has been described in reviews as a “guitarist with dazzling dexterity” (Folk Magazine) as well as having “an infectious groove” and “powerful performances” (Thomas Leeb – Acoustic magazine). In 2013 he was also given the title of “1000mph Jim” by Mike Dawes for his ability to fingerpick with speed usually only associated with ninja training.

James plays a blend of his own carefully crafted compositions, coupled with an eclectic array of popular arrangements that showcase the passion, complexity and depth that only fingerstyle guitar can afford.

His stage presence and artistry is consistently complimented wherever he travels. This is in all probability due to the fact that he has spent the last fifteen years as a professional Circus Entertainer. This professional role has seen him perform in a vast array of locations from TV, Theatre, Stage and Big Top whilst also qualifying from the UK’s leading Circus school. This makes him a qualified clown! It would seem that this was always his destiny, as indeed his high school French teacher (& amateur clairvoyant) had predicted many years earlier in his school report!

James currently performs all over the UK and Europe where his fan base, popularity and success is rapidly growing.

His debut album is due for release in spring 2015.

Dave Sharp (The Alarm) [+]

Free Entry

Davesharp2013

1989 saw the US release coast-to-coast hit album, Change, and #1 AOR single, ‘Sold Me Down the River’, from British rock band, The Alarm. Sadly, 1991 saw the surprise departure of the band’s lead singer…

Dave Sharp, co-founder of The Alarm had that previous year enlisted the help of legendary maverick record producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Willie Nelson & Leonard Cohen) to help cut his first solo record. It was a determined young man who walked through the doors at The Hit Factory NYC in December 1990, and in under a week Sharp’s album Hard Travlin’ had been recorded, mixed and delivered for release to IRS Records.

A relentless two-year period of Stateside touring followed including appearances at Farm Aid concerts and Earth Day celebrations before Sharp returned to New York City in 1992 to perform for an audience of 25,000 gathered in Central Park to celebrate the 80th birthday of folk legend Woody Guthrie. It was a seminal event for Dave Sharp who performed alongside Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Billy Bragg and shared the stage with The Right Reverend Jessie Jackson.

In 1996 Sharp once again teamed up with producer Bob Johnston entering Credence Clearwater Revival’s studio in San Francisco to record and release his second solo album, Downtown America. Two underground hits followed, ‘The Ghost of Preacher Casey’ and ‘Give Me Back My Job’, which both received healthy rotation across the board at American radio and led to television appearances on country music’s Nashville Network.

Sharp returned to the UK in 2002 to record his third solo album, The Power of Soul, released on Manchester’s Townsend Records, successfully re-introducing him to British audiences and earning him solo recognition across the UK with British music critics.

Dave Sharp’s solo albums have received positive critical recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and over the past decade and a half Sharp has been fortunate to work alongside many of the artists he has long respected. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash have appeared on his recordings. He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner. Whether solo or with a band, guitar in hand, Dave Sharp delivers the ”Spirit of Rock & Roll.”

His music has been described as everything from folk and blues to rock, country and punk; his performances as everything from legendary to lousy. However one word can never be used to describe Dave Sharp: ”Predictable.”

Dave Sharp has embraced mainstream popular culture whilst at the same time remaining one step away from its grasp . . . he likes it that way!

‘It’s a Mighty Hard Road to be Travlin’ Down.’ Dave Sharp writes it, sings it and lives it.

Flight Brigade [+]

flight brigade 2

With ‘glorious folk-tinged stadium anthems’ (Record of The day) Flight Brigade is the coming together of two families. Lead singer Oliver Baines grew up on a farm in Ohio, before moving to the UK, where he first met fellow band member Miriam (now his wife) when they were kids. Her sister Dorry plays violin and joins Miriam in harmonies, the girls having been steeped in the 70?s British folk scene, thanks to their musician parents.

‘full of youth, hope, and nostalgia for a time they shouldn’t be able to remember, it’s an infectious mix’ – TOM ALLEN, CBC RADIO 2

BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson plus Radio 2’s Bob Harris and Janice Long have all championed the band to date as has Tom Allen on Canada’s CBC Radio 2. The band have supported Grouplove, Dry The River, Stornoway, King Charles and Seth Lakeman and have played main stages at Hop Farm & Blissfields festivals, opening for Maximo Park and Primal Scream. The band were commissioned to compose the music for an ITV documentary about Haiti as well as the Unicef World Cup campaign and are now working towards a 2015 release of their debut LP with producer Gavin Monaghan (Kings of Leon, The Editors).

Tankus The Henge [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Tankus the Henge - Jump Hi Res

Tankus the Henge are six sharp dressed and bedraggled gentlemen hailing from some of the more eccentric parts of London Town. Their music draws from a multitudinous array of influences including rock, ragtime, reggae, blues, funk, disco, gypsy punk and Django.

With a big beat and a carnival air it will get you out of your seat and dancing the tango.

“Imagine Suggs, The Clash and Paolo Nutini mixing a musical Ska recipe ..”

Glasswerk Magazine

“Roll up and enter the dark carnival of Tankus the Henge, you will not regret one second of its fantastic touch… one of the most thrilling and sensationally addictive releases this year.”

Ringmaster Review

“Imagine Madness with 2 drops of LSD. Totally original, completely non-contrived vaudeville psychobilly. That’s a new one…”

Joyzine

The band’s recent single Cakewalk featured on Chris Hawkins’ 6 Music show as well as Alex Lester’s Radio 2 show. The current line-up was completed in 2011 and since then the band has been either on the road or holed up in a recording studio working on their eponymously titled debut album, released in 2013 on SRM Records. With wailing horns and a steaming piano in tow, Tankus the Henge have toured the far reaches of America, Europe, Albania and the Isle of Wight, bringing with them their electrical energy and fascinating tales of wonder and woe.

A six piece powerhouse of a band drawing visual and musical influences from old time Fairgrounds to modern day Circus; The Beatles to Tom Waits and Gogol Bordello to Radiohead, they embody a look and a sound that lies somewhere between their South East London home and the carnival town of New Orleans. With their charismatic frontman, Jaz Delorean, looking like a lost character from a Terry Gilliam film and the pump nd grind of the Tankus the Henge sound generating a groove that makes it impossible to stand still, their live show ebbs and flows like a small boat on a turbulent sea.

Any other band who billed themselves as “the most fantastic band in the world” would rightly quake in their boots at having to live up to such fanfare.

Tankus the Henge defy you to contradict them!

Undercover Hippy 1

Billy Rowan, (The Undercover Hippy), is definitely not your average singer songwriter. His music brings together acoustic guitar, soulful vocals, infectious reggae rhythms, and the lyrical delivery of a skilled mc. After 7 years spent DJ’ing and MC’ing on the Drum & Bass circuit, Billy ditched the decks for a guitar and started out as a solo act in 2007. Since then he has teamed up with some of the best musicians on the circuit, and now plays with a 7 piece band, bringing together fiddle, keys, drums, bass, congas and backing vocals to create a high energy, interactive and highly entertaining live show. Combining intelligent, provocative lyrics with dangerously catchy hooks and a feel good groove, this is music for the thinking man to shake his arse to. Think Plan B meets The Cat Empire… on a protest march… at the Edinburgh Fringe.

From starting out 5 years ago playing in festival cafes for a free meal, Billy and his band of back-street groove pushers now perform to sell-out crowds at some of the UK’s best festivals and venues. Highlights for 2012 included performing on the main stage after Mr Motivator (!) at Scotland’s Eden Festival, and headlining at the amazing Beatherder Festival.

Billy has self-released one album and one E.P. under the name “The Undercover Hippy”, both to critical acclaim, as well as a single release in Germany on Agogo Records. He is currently hard at work recording his first full length album under his own name, due for release in summer 2013.

Open Mic Session with Ashley Fayth [+]

Free Entry

Slots available from 8pm.

Ashley Fayth 1

Ashley Fayth’s whimsical songs are thoughtfully crafted and delivered, but with the simplicity and natural ease “of a clear river over rounded stones”, according to talent agent and industry guru Robert Singerman.

Hailing from the island of Newfoundland, a hotbed for some of Canada’s best storytellers and creative writers, the award-winning songstress delivers musical short stories saturated with colourful imagery and poetic prose.

David Farrell of Canadian entertainment blog NewCanadianMusic.com credits Fayth with having “a voice as clear and as beautiful as Waterford crystal,” and with “writing songs that are guiless enough to make you smirk and blush. In fact, it is not hard to call her sweetheart”.

Cleverly knit lyrics, playful rhythms, and flawless vocal delivery come together to form beautiful songs that are at once moving, witty, thought-provoking, and entertaining – a quirky yet enticing synthesis of the earthy and the ethereal.

And although Ashley’s dark side does surface in some of her more sombre and seductively haunting renditions, her sound is still overwhelmingly playful, refreshingly poppy, and irreproachably sweet.

The Newfie songbird moved to the UK last year to begin her Master’s thesis on The Importance of Green Space in 18thCentury British Literature but “got distracted” and wrote and recorded her single “Peanut Butter” which immediately picked up songwriting awards from both Universal Music and the Canadian Songwriters Association, leading Ashley to put her academic career on hiatus while she completed the album, Wonder Wonder.

Songs from Wonder Wonder were featured on BBC Radio 2, CBC Radio, and on more than 100 regional and national stations worldwide, at one point charting on college radio stations in the USA. “Peanut Butter” was also included alongside The Civil Wars and Los Lonely Boys on a compilation released by Inspire Entertainment.

Recently, Ashley has played showcases at CMJ in New York, South by Southwest in Austin, SoundCity in Liverpool, and Canadian Music Week in Toronto, and has been touring independently, in addition to representing Canada on theInternational Songwriters Tour, in the UK and North America.

Ashley is currently in the process of writing material for her new EP, I am the Bird scheduled to be released later this year.

Wonder Wonder is available for purchase in Ashley’s shop, on iTunes, and from all other major online music distributors. Visit Ashley’s website and join the mailing list to receive free downloads, news, and exclusive material.

Balkan Alien Sound [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Balkan Alien Sound 1

Balkan Alien Sound…”a high octane, dance driven, folk fusion outfit that offer a mix of Irish, Klezmer, Gypsy and Balkan styles to create a distinctive and infectious music, setting them apart as world music trail blazers in Northern Ireland”. A passion for travel, Balkan music and culture brought the group together, united by an ethos fueled by the exploration and celebration of cultural diversity through music. Influences in traditional music, classical, jazz, rock and folk pepper and permeate the eclectic seven-pieces sound enthralling audiences from all over Ireland since the bands formation in 2008. Avant-garde strings combining bouzouki and violin with piano accordion are the melodic vanguard, accompanied by guitar, vocals and the solidity of electric bass and drums that round out the sound. Hints of Bulgaria, Macedonia and indeed Ireland can be heard throughout their writing style and their repertoire, as well as consisting of original compositions, tackles and breathes new life into traditional Balkan pieces.

The last six years has seen them produce, promote and preserve the World Music scene in Northern Ireland, introducing live audiences to new music and cultures in addition to working within communities through interactive music performances and workshops. Balkan Alien Sound work hand in hand with organisations such as LUXe Processional Spectacle Theatre, WOMAD N.I. and Beyond Skin N.I. which has led to valuable developments addressing racism through music with the latter.

The fact the band are an all-Irish outfit is important element of the group and hints of this echo throughout their sound. Entirely at home on the big stage, the band has toured festivals throughout Ireland, U.K and Europe over the last few years including major Festivals such as Glastonbury, WOMAD, Tradicionarius (Esp) and MELA. They run their own International Music Club in Derry, Northern Ireland and regularly host bands from all over Europe and beyond, sharing the stage to embrace music and culture. 2014 sees the release of their highly anticipated second album to date, which they will be touring far and wide throughout the year.

The freshness and vitality of their latest compositions have already been causing a stir in the UK, with award winning jazz pianist Neil Cowley inviting the group to London to premier their new track ‘Balkaseltzer’ at a PRS showcase in January with his trio. Be it Festival, Carnival, Circus or street party, Balkan Alien Sound is your ticket to infectious dance!

If you’re feeling creative, change the colors to suit your décor or go completely rogue. We provide all the painting supplies: a 16”x20” canvas, acrylic paint, brushes, apron, music, and a good time.

This event will be hosted by Lindsay Burgess who will be guiding you through the painting ‘Cherry Blossom’ step by step.

Cherry Blossom was originally created by Kristina Elizabeth for Paint Nite.
