Open Mic Session with Ringmaster Rusty Mahone [+]

Free Entry

A GREEN SMOKE HOKUM PRODUCTION

Come all ye, you fools and freaks

And assemble by the fireside

Bring drums and whistles and guitars

Let’s scratch the itch we have inside.

Bring yourselves in strange attire,

Sing together in a heavenly choir.

Let us celebrate and quaff and eat.

We’ve seen off winter and tonight’s our treat.

Here in comes the bearded lady

The dancing bear and old slim shady

Following on the tarot man

and a girl with frogs kept in a can.

Here’s the man with burning balls

And the girls who walk through walls.

Short arsed, giant or just  plain weird

Rules fall down because we’re here .

If you’re boring stay at home

You deserve to die alone

Tonight is all about the spark

That makes us special, leaves our mark

Imperfections praised tonight

Dress up, show off and then unite.

Together we will start the spring.

We will make the rafters ring.

(Old Cheshire poem)

(c) Russell Mabbutt 2015

It’s eggs and chickens and bunnies and fluff and chocolate.

It’s rebirth too and tonight, for one night only our spectacular open mic night is reborn as a celebration of the alternative,  and all things freaky and all things circus.

The 45s [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

The 45s 3

The 45s were formed in Carlisle, UK in the spring of 2012 when fifteen year old school friends met a new student named Tom Hamilton- Hughes. Tom began to share his passion for the Blues and British R & B, and that was the beginning of The 45s.

Moving on from local favorites the band is now playing shows in the UK and Europe with ‘sold-out’ signs appearing more and more. They self-released a double A sided single in 2013 of two originals, Devil Of A Woman and It Ain’t Over which attracted the attention of not only fans around the globe.

The band also self-released a 4-track EP titled Teenage Depression which they dedicated to Eddie & The Hot Rods guitarist Dave Higgs who passed away at the end of 2013 just as The 45s were appearing in his hometown of Canvey Island, Essex, UK.

Sparko and Wilko Johnson members of the legendary group Dr. Feelgood joined The 45s on stage and declared: ‘The 45s are my favourite band’. NME declared them to be “wunderkinds’; going on to say: ‘they put in a storming set consisting of their own songs and R&B covers. It’s sweaty, raw and loud and the Canvey crowd loved it!’

Recently called ‘The Yardbirds illegitimate kiddies’ and described ‘the snarling intensity’ of their live set by Blues Magazine, word is quickly spreading about the band.

GULF

Gulf, formed in Liverpool in 2014.

With groove-laden beats, snaking bass lines and the seeming inability
to differentiate between established genres, their sound is a melting pot
of pop, psychedelia, disco and anything in between.

“Mark Jones’s voice is the epitome of anti-singing, in the sense of
someone straining to reach notes and express (as in: expectorate) their
feelings. It is an instrument of cool dispassion, barely breaking into
anything beyond a restrained tenor, conveying boyish wonder and
yearning” – Paul Lester, The Guardian

Gulf are Mark Jones (guitar, vocals, synths), Femi Fadero (guitar,
backing vocals), Tom Murray (guitar, backing vocals), Jake Brown
(bass) and Josh Gorman (drums).

Radio support from Zane Low, Huw Stephens (Radio 1), BBC6,
Amazing Radio and BBC Merseyside, and tipped by The Guardian as

“One of the best bands for 2015’ have given the band early attention.

“Equal parts disorientating, momentous and expansive / Gulf continue
their ascent into the psych stratosphere” – NME

Ruarri-Joseph

Originally born and raised in Edinburgh, Ruarri Joseph found his songwriting roots in the southwestern Pacific. A move to New Zealand followed his parents’ divorce, and an 11-year-old Joseph found himself coming of age in Dannevirke (population 6,000), an isolated, rural farming community. Dannevirke was picturesque but remote, dotted with wooden shacks and hand-painted signs – not the most engaging environment for a young, would-be musician. “Relocating to New Zealand was an amazing experience, and moving away to start a new life was a romantic idea at first, but when you’re a teenager you tend to feel disenfranchised wherever you are, however beautiful the surroundings might be.”

Joseph pined for the Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell records his father had played back in Edinburgh, and began to seek out music of his own, eventually finding his way to that decade’s best: grunge, and the fuzzed-out, thrashy riffs of bands like Nirvana, Mudhoney and Pearl Jam, taking in a little Britpop along the way. With those sounds filling his days, Ruarri spent his early teens busking around the local area, dabbling in punk and knocking around in a handful of short-lived outfits. With very few live music venues around, strict age restrictions operating at the local bars and a lack of any real music scene, Joseph and his friends learnt to improvise, putting together mini tours of the local schools, turning up in time to knock out improvised sets for the lunchtime crowd. These shoestring musical adventures were enough to convince Joseph that bigger things awaited.

The Loose Kites [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Theloosekites2013

Imagine if you will a band. Not just any ordinary band, but a band cut from a different cloth.

A band with soul, whose sole mission is to infect the planet with love, with passion and with music to make you smile and make you think. Imagine, if you can, the loose kites.

With a unique and dynamic eight-piece line up, including members with diverse backgrounds, the kites represent something different. With a sound which includes elements of folk, pop, rock and more, the band relies not only on the staples of voice, guitar, bass and drums, but also brass, woodwind, strings and keys. Those additional elements make the distinctive kites sound a fuller one. That sound still accentuates the positive, with the focus very much on the groove, and the catchiness of the tunes. Harmonies abound, and melody is king.

The band has developed and adapted new elements into its core since being formed five years ago. After the release of their self-titled debut back in 2009, the band quickly picked up gigs, radio and an endorsement with the highly acclaimed Farida guitar company, alongside Oasis, Maximo Park, The Levellers and The Wombats. The company has hailed them as ‘…one of the most exciting folk acts this country has produced in recent years’.

Now the kites are moving forward with their brand new album, ‘Of Bricks And Brambles’. A marked progression from their debut, the album shows that the band are not afraid of expressing themselves in a variety of musical settings. Taking inspiration from local life on the terraced streets where they grew up, the album takes queues from far and wide, and transfers them into the band’s very special sound. The album is accompanied by a range of exciting and witty videos which will be used to promote forthcoming singles.

With an enviable live record, including headlining national festivals, the band’s shows have become legendary in their home area. Most recently rocking Telford’s Warehouse in Chester, the band are set for select UK and international dates in 2015.

The loose kites mix a strong sense of local tradition with an international outlook. Their music is good-time-low-down-good-fun, delivered within a timeless setting, of emotion and soulfulness. Make sure you are at the album launch, and are ready to dance and sing your heart out.

Two pint buzz is the world’s best buzz: we sell pints. Two-cocktail buzz is also excellent and often too expensive: but not here. Two for one on a variety of lip-smacking brain-shaking cocktails.
