Merry Hell [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Merry Hell 1

Merry Hell: A Northern based 7-piece offering blistering folk/rock with a message. Uplifting, inspiring and insightful in equal measure with an interesting past and a promising future.

Launched in 2011, Merry Hell combine male and female vocals, mandolin, electric guitars, bass, drums and keyboards with an ambition to revolutionise the genre.

Musically they range from the anthemic to the intimate whilst combining lyrical playfulness with astute observation and comment, they offer your favourite songs that you haven’t yet heard plus a live experience that is both infectious and inspiring.  A band with a history, a pedigree and most importantly, a promise for the future.

Merry Hell has risen phoenix-like from the embers of 90’s cult rabble-rousers The Tansads.  – for many who knew them, the finest band never to make it BIG – a quasi folk-punk-rock orchestra that enjoyed a career spanning 5 albums and countless tours. Brought together again in 2010, for 3 triumphant reunion gigs at their spiritual home of The Citadel, St Helens, the venue for their celebratory live album, ‘Drag Down the Moon’.

As the dust settled on the reunion shows, the decision had been made that a revitalized band should take the spirit of The Tansads forward into a new era. So Merry Hell was raised.

The Kettle brothers, John, Bob, and Andrew are back, joined by John’s wife, Virginia, who brings both acoustic guitar and the perfect vocal foil to Andrew’s gravelly delivery. Former Tansads, Lee Goulding on keyboards and drummer Andy Jones consolidate the line-up, completed by bassist Andrew Dawson.

Known for their original, emotionally charged and anthemic songs, this band are just as much at home producing exquisitely crafted recordings in the studio as they are in their high-energy assaults on the souls of live audiences.

Martyn Joseph [+]

£16.00 Tickets

see

Martyn Joseph 3

Martyn Joseph is as performer like no other.

He’s a jaw dropping guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style, teamed up with a powerful show stopping voice, and has been called “The Welsh Springsteen”, but there are also shades of John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews there may be – but he stands in his own right, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives.

Juxtaposition is a key theme in Martyn’s work. The simplicity and the complexity of the human condition and all that it encompasses is underpinned with a heady promise of hope. There is a versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures, and stories, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman.

2014 saw him take the spirit of his music onto a more practical footing with the launch of his “Let Yourself Trust”, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to make a small difference out of great love and commitment by challenging injustice wherever it’s found, educating via advocacy, campaigning for human rights, and raising issues that have been forgotten or ignored via fundraising initiatives, thus bringing about greater awareness for beautiful people in powerless situations.

Autumn 2015 will mark the release of Martyn’s brand new studio album, and he’ll be showcasing these new songs, along with other familiar and much loved material.

Martyn Joseph. A unique talent driven by passion and love for his trade, continues to write, sing and play from the heart.

“Springsteen-indebted Americana, suspended folk chords glistening beneath troubadour tales, his lyrical eloquence still inspired almost 30 years on from his debut” – MOJO

“One of the most charismatic and electrifying performers in Britain today…tough and passionate”? Tom Robinson BBC 6 music

“One of acoustic music’s most original voices, and most forward looking of his generation of singer/songwriters”? Q Magazine

“A profound experience”? The Boston Globe

“Songs of social commentary as much as love, with a rootsy sensibility”? Time Out

“Written with craft, performed with passion”? Financial Time

Rainbreakers [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

RAINBREAKERS

Rainbreakers are a four piece rock outfit that create a raw and hard-hitting sound.

Influences can be heard from a range of different styles that echo back to the

stylings of the late 60’s and 70’s, layering a combination of rock, pop, blues and soul.

Holding on to tradition, but by no means purists, Rainbreakers indicate a fascination

with older artists such as Free and Hendrix, yet the band draws significant influence

from the contemporary sounds of The Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr and Monophonics.

Since their formation in 2012, Rainbreakers have played countless amounts of

shows at club venues and festival stages, resulting in the development of their own

sound that truly represents themselves as well as the experiences they share. The

band’s impassioned and fervent live performance has given leverage to acquire a

strong and honest following in their hometown and across the country.

Alongside the release of their latest EP ‘Blood Not Brass’, Rainbreakers are already

set to perform with Chantel McGregor and Laurence Jones on their 2015 UK Tours

as well festival bookings including Stourbridge Blues Festival, Farmer Phils and

many more.

Thea Gilmore – Christmas Party [+]

£16 Tickets

Thea Gilmore 2013

“Here’s to tonic, here’s to gin, here’s to sparks and here’s to gasoline…” You’re The Radio

We are lucky to have musicians like Thea Gilmore, musicians that want more from themselves and more from music than some pre-formed, whistle-friendly cud, something to chew on but never fully digest. In an age where artists – male and female – tend to be either hyper-sexualised or completely neutered, Gilmore is that rare creature, an actual adult with a heart and a soul, a grown up with an opinion. Thea Gilmore is a real person tackling the sort of issues real people deal with every day, only, unlike the rest of us, she tackles those issues with an utterly beautiful voice and songs that touch on folk and jazz and rock and Americana.

Not for no reason does Bruce Springsteen buy her records, do artistes ranging from Martha Wainwright to Mike Scott seek to collaborate with her, and not for no reason does Tom Waits’ celebrated percussionist Michael Blair appear on Murphy’s Heart, Gilmore’s tenth album – one that follows a sustained period of artistic and critical success.

Open Mic Session with Rusty Mahone [+]

“Carry On Regardless”
Rusty’s sack of festive baubles.

tache

It’s the Sunday before Christmas
and all through the house,
Musicians were stirring
And using their mouse
To scout for a party
At which they could play
They found this at Telfords
And are now on their way.

After last year’s big gay special, you will be pleased to know that rusty has abandoned cross dressing as there isn’t enough alcohol in the new formation of ‘Veet for Men’.

drag

This year rusty brings us a smorgasbord of consumertide indulgence cunningly disguised as an open mic night. All performers arriving before 8.30 will get a chance to perform, and we will accommodate late comers where possible.
If you are bringing bulky instruments, it’s a big help if you let us know in advance. We can’t accommodate drum kits or back line amps unless arranged in advance.
The theme for the evening is ‘Carry on regardless ‘

Rusty said “This theme is a broad church. Interpret it however you can. Emulate Barbara Windsors bra in ‘carry on camping’ or just try something new, and don’t stop when it goes wrong. I try to provide themes that work for everyone, and I notice that the performers who never read these write ups correlate strongly with those who do carry on and on. And on.”

Rusty always puts on a show, so come on down and watch him stretch his tinsel out in the name of entertainment.
