The Unicorn Club [+]

We’ve allowed ourselves to be convinced / coerced into hosting this crazily, amazing sounding event….AGAIN!

THE BIGGEST BIG KID PARTY INVITATION YOU’LL EVER RECEIVE!

Unicorn
Oh yes, I’ve been scheming and the lovely people at Telfords have agreed to my crazy idea too!

You’re invited to leave your problems at the door and have some grown-up play time with the Happiness Ninja! Pop on a uni-horn, play a game, do some colouring in, raid the fancy dress box – it’s your time to indulge your inner child and have an excuse to act like a knob for a couple of hours!

You see play brings joy – it’s vital for problem solving, creativity and relationships. Some activities put your brain into alpha state (aka fun party mode) which helps with stress, anxiety and depression too! It’s been proven by brainy scientists too!

Go grab a ticket – places are limited so ‘do an organised’ and get booked on (it’ll help me work out how many party bags to make up too) and the suggested contribution for our play date is £15 to cover materials and stuff xxx

p.s. boozy drinks and scoff will be available to purchase from our lovely hosts too, yay!

Mowbird [+]

Free before 10pm £4 after…

mowbird

Mowbird are a surf-punk quartet from Wrexham, North Wales. Formed by Ben Sawin (vocals/guitar) and Mike Smith (bass) with the later additions of Suzanne Dempsey (organ/vocals) and Ben Valentine Trow (drums/vocals), they self recorded and self released four EPs (Excellent, OK / Ilk / We Sell Maternity Swimwear / The Quiet Despair Of The Starship Enterprise) before signing to Cardiff based Shape Records. Debut album Islander was released in February 2014, preceded by single Happy Active Horse Organ which garnered radio play by Huw Stephens (Radio 1), Bethan Elfyn & Adam Walton (BBC Radio Wales) as well as Tom Ravenscroft & Marc Riley (6music), the latter for whom the band recorded a session and led to a collaboration with fellow Welsh popster Sweet Baboo in 2015.

Press quotes:

“Fusing garage punk nuance with a lo-fi aesthetic somewhere between the fledgling punk scene and C86 sensibilities, Mowbird are a dynamic force to be reckoned” Drowned in Sound

“Mowbird are surf twang gone so wrong, it’s right; Guided By Voices distracted by UFO tail lights; liberated garage punks grottying canvases in an art school studio.” Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales

The Smiths Indeed [+]

CANCELLED

TO BE RESCHEDULED

The Smiths Indeed 1

The Smiths Indeed were formed in Liverpool in 2005, after a deceptively placed advertisement [SINGER NEEDED TO FRONT SMITHS COVER BAND. MUST BE TALENTED. GIGS WAITING.] caught the eye of an ambitious aficionado. The band consists of Smiths devotees and outstanding musicians. Their trump card is a singer with uncannily similar vocal chords to Morrissey’s. In a relatively short space of time, The Smiths Indeed have emerged as a fantastic live act, aiming to capture the essence of a mid-1980s Smiths concert. And flailing.

They have toured extensively around the United Kingdom, the USA and Europe, playing to full capacity audiences of Smiths fans old and new in – among other places – Newcastle, Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool, Brighton, Glasgow and Los Angeles. Their first gig in December 2005 was in a small basement bar in Glasgow; the final gig of 2010 saw them triumphantly celebrating the 25th anniversary of Meat Is Murder at Manchester Apollo. “It goes on… goes on… goes on… goes on… goes on.”

The Smiths Indeed offer a fantastic night of nostalgia for those who remember those distant days in the mid-1980s when The Smiths lit up the world of popular music. For those who weren’t even born then or were otherwise engaged, they offer a great opportunity to witness what it might have been like to see The Smiths live. After all, a Smiths Indeed show is meant to be a celebration of The Smiths. Apportez vos fleurs.

“a brilliant tribute to The Smiths”. i-D Magazine

The Nouvelles [+]

 Free before 10pm, £4 thereafter

the nouvelles

Many in the British independent music scene believe it is only The Nouvelles who are capable of following on from Kasabian. But, like Stone Roses before them, the band are currently setting out the right way to do all things alt…
Nouvelles are a NI fronted British hardline indie band, signed to A1M Records.  Their long awaited full debut is due this winter. They’ve had 2 pre-releases which both went down a storm in the indie underground, both which you can listen to or buy on this site.  Surrounded by Angels (Love All Around) sold out of Piccadilly Records in an hour after the band had just got together, while Rising got Tom Robinson and loads of other BBC and press appraise in 2014/15.  A new local indie pop band have even called themselves after the SBA song!  They sold out the Academy in a strange town in their 1st year, then played major festivals, as Manchester attempted to elevate them ahead of then smaller rivals Twisted Wheel and Courteeners.  But Nouvelles were having none of it and went into hiding due to the attention, feeling they had alot more to do before they were ready for the next level, one they wanted to manufacture not one that would manufacture them.  They are duly now back playing the TOP level indie venues along with occasionally, their own choice of more working class venues, building a fanbase carefully beyond Belfast.  Along with multiple BBC plays unplugged in 2014/15, they were recently called “the next big northern band” by one Manchester Evening News music journo and “top of the boroughs music scene” by the Wigan Evening Post where they are in studio.  Their much anticipated debut EP is now in post production under Wigan producer, John Kettle (The Tansands, Merry Hell).  Often perceived as a 5 or 6 piece due to a keenness for working with such guests as female backing singers or pianists, Nouvelles are a 4-piece consisting of :
Johnnie ‘Jacko’ Jackson – Vocals
Tom Kinton – Guitars
Rob Regan – Bass
Steve Atkinson – Drums

In October Telford’s Warehouse is launching a brand new pop up interactive art and social night to Chester.

Drawing (no pun intended) on ideas based on events across the country such as Street Wars and Doodle-planet, ‘The Draw Inn ’ combines sketching, graffiti, painting and imagery with musical backdrops and social interaction.

Whether you are an experience penman, budding artist or want to try your hand at drawing then head on down to this special event on the 15th October and let your creativity run free. Doors open at 8pm with guest DJ’s playing a selection of the finest tracks spanning everything from Tom Waits to Dire Straits.

Before time is called artists will be encouraged to swap, sell, give away, or just show off their masterpieces. So be participant or spectator, art lover or critic don’t miss out on this creative social. You can find out more details on Telford’s website, www.telfordswarehouse.com or simply search or The Draw Inn on Facebook.

The Daymons [+]

Free before 10pm, £4 thereafter

daymons bbb

Coming straight outta Chester, via too many vias to get into, The Daymons got it together in late 2012, though their collective history goes back many more years… Jim, Tim, Guy… Through shared houses in lesser parts of London Town, call-centre drudgery and pre-dawn raves in abandoned cinemas… Through Britpop nearly weres, hard rock players, electronica, dub-step before anyone had called it that, and the world’s first ‘Roses tribute, these fellas have been around the block and beyond, landing back in the old town; same place, same time.

The trio in an attic, two acoustics and a muted trumpet … Let’s do it… Trio became quartet with Richie B… hair, vibes, folk and relative youth … Quintet then, with Fran, first time bassist and born to do it… Five in a pub car park, someone knows a drummer (someone always knows a drummer) … Five become six … he’s a drummer, yes, but also a tickler of ivories, a singer of harmonies, a teller of tales. Six of the best then… lots of guitars, a horn … lots of singers and more song-writers than a New York café in ‘66 … they’re doing it ‘cause they love it and, man, they love to do it.

Gulf [+]

Free before 10pm, £4 thereafter

GULF

Gulf, formed in Liverpool in 2014.

With groove-laden beats, snaking bass lines and the seeming inability
to differentiate between established genres, their sound is a melting pot
of pop, psychedelia, disco and anything in between.

“Mark Jones’s voice is the epitome of anti-singing, in the sense of
someone straining to reach notes and express (as in: expectorate) their
feelings. It is an instrument of cool dispassion, barely breaking into
anything beyond a restrained tenor, conveying boyish wonder and
yearning” – Paul Lester, The Guardian

Gulf are Mark Jones (guitar, vocals, synths), Femi Fadero (guitar,
backing vocals), Tom Murray (guitar, backing vocals), Jake Brown
(bass) and Josh Gorman (drums).

Radio support from Zane Low, Huw Stephens (Radio 1), BBC6,
Amazing Radio and BBC Merseyside, and tipped by The Guardian as

“One of the best bands for 2015’ have given the band early attention.

“Equal parts disorientating, momentous and expansive / Gulf continue
their ascent into the psych stratosphere” – NME

The Wave Pictures + Seazoo [+]

Free entry before 10pm… £4.00 after

the wave pictures

The Wave Pictures return with a brand new, vinyl only album called A Season in Hull, due out on 12 February on their own label Wymeswold Records. The album was recorded on acoustic guitars in one room, with a bunch of their friends, live in to one microphone on singer Dave Tattersall’s birthday, January 28th, 2015. The songs were written as quickly as possible and the recording captures that specific moment in all its spontaneous, thrilling and immediate glory. As Tattersall elaborates: “That’s what this is – a one-microphone happy birthday recording.”

The band reveal the video for the first single “Slick Black River From the Rain From the Rain“. Dave Tattersall says this about the song: “I am crazy about E Minor, specifically on the guitar. There are 3 main ways that you can play it on an electric guitar: open; barred on the 7th fret; or barred on the 12th fret. (On an acoustic guitar you usually just have the first two options). The 7th fret version is just the right colour for me. I write more songs in this key, and in this position, than in all the other keys put together. The reason is that it is my favourite! The 7th fret, guitar version of the E Minor chord has such a strong, evocative, pull to it. But if you play E Minor on a piano, it’s nothing special at all, just another minor chord. All the chords are equal on a piano, but a guitar contains magic chords. On a guitar some chord positions are much better than others. These are magic chords!”

Earlier in the year The Wave Pictures (Jonny Helm, Dave Tattersall and Franic Rozycki) released Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon, their critically acclaimed collaboration with Billy Childish. They cemented their reputation as one of Britain’s most beloved and exciting live bands around with a sold out gig at London’s legendary 100 Club, their biggest headline show to date at The Tufnell Park Dome and an astonishingly heartwarming performance headlining the Garden Stage at The Green Man Festival.
