William the Conquerer [+]

Free admission before 9pm, £4 thereafter

willy

Once a treasure of the folk circuit, Ruarri Joseph has been leading a double existence, 4 studio albums in under the moniker Ruarri Joseph the singer created William the Conqueror and hit a vein of creativity recording 3 albums of new music in his shed.

“I want people to hear the stories from a different perspective. After three years of keeping William in the dark, I want to switch things up. Ruarri can go off the radar it’s William’s turn now.”

It’s underlined in bold by the wisdom and wit of a lyrical slipstream that is, in turn, commanded by a scuffed leather baritone – a combination that keeps the listener engrossed, informed and mystified in equal measure.

Bursting with retro-infused energy, there are a myriad influences, underpinned by a taste for good, old-fashioned roots. One minute it’s a hushed JJ Cale that somehow finds its way to an angry Jim Morrison or a late-70s Dylan; the next it’s a grunge era Pearl Jam via Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits.

What is undoubtedly unique is ‘William’s’ rich, earnest voice and the poetic nuance of a man clearly wise to the complexities and hardships of love and life.

In an age of soundbites and tweets, pastiches, genres and references, William the Conqueror, quite simply, makes real, original music.

IAN PROWSE & AMSTERDAM W/Support [+]

Ian Prowse - Promo Shots 09.06.15 (Low Res)-36

Merseyside hero Ian Prowse has formed two successful bands Pele and Amsterdam. Pele released 3 albums on Polydor/M&G Records. Six singles troubled the lower ends of the UK charts but abroad they scored hits in Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Holland and most notably a Number One in South Africa with ‘Megalomania’. Pele were a noted live act completing nine tours of the U.K.

Ian then formed Amsterdam and their first single for Beat Crazy Records ‘The Journey’ was a UK top 40 single in February 2005. Follow up single ‘Does this train stop on Merseyside’ also hit the UK Charts.

The song regularly elicited an emotional response from Radio 1 DJ John Peel. Peel’s widow Sheila Ravenscroft went on the station after the DJ’s death and confirmed that ‘He was not capable of playing it without crying’. The song itself got a further lease of life as one of the centre pieces of Irish legend Christy Moore’s latest album which spent 5 weeks at the top spot in his home country.

Ian also has a long standing friendship with Elvis Costello who used Amsterdam[3] as his backing band on the Jonathan Ross television show as well as opening act on several occasions. The relationship was blessed on record when Prowse performed a duet with Costello on a cover of The Searchers 1964 hit ‘Don’t throw your love away’ for the Liverpool Number Ones Project on EMI Records in 2008.

The last Amsterdam album ‘Arm in Arm’ ended up being voted 14th best ever album out of Liverpool by the local press, which when you consider the Beatles released 10 is some feat! Lead off single ‘Home’ was played on 21 consecutive days by Radio 2’s Janice Long. Janice is a huge fan of the band having had them in no less than 4 times for live sessions.

2012 saw Ian release ‘Does this train stop on Merseyside: The Very Best of Ian Prowse’ to across the board rave review and

2014 saw Ian release his very first solo album ‘WHO LOVES YA BABY’ with 2nd solo album ‘Companeros’ hot on it’s heels in 2015.

Companeros has garnered Ian the best reviews of his 25 year career.

With Support from Nish Goyal

Nish Goyal is a punk/folk/indie singer-songwriter from Chester. Although his first instrument was piano he primarily plays guitar and bass now as well as singing. Nish graduated in Law and worked In the City briefly as a legal advisor before moving to Frankfurt to take up a stockbroking job. He released a studio album called ‘A Little Validation” in early 2011 and a project called ‘The Hedonist EP’ which (as the name suggests!) celebrates his own hedonistic side, soon after.

As described by reviewer ‘My Random Jukebox’…”My favourite element of his music is his ability with words, this guy is a crazy wordsmith. He has this talent to use his own life experience to mould the lyrics to tell some great and at times humorous stories. I think this is what helps to give his music such an honest and likable feel.”

Nish has recorded and released an 8 track EP called ‘the Rage EP’ which was released on 29th January 2015. His first single ‘Get Started’ was released in July followed by ‘Save the Day’ in September. He has recently signed a one album deal with a small indie label in Portsmouth called Coffee Jingle Records and is hoping to release the new album in early 2016.

He is to be found gigging regularly in Liverpool at places like the Jacaranda, the Cavern and Bier as well as open mic nights in Manchester and London. He has gigged further afield in the UK in 2015 kicking of the summer with his first ever music festival appearance at 2000 trees festival in Gloucestershire followed by his first ever tour of England. The autumn was spent doing his first ever tour of the USA where he played 11 shows in 8 states including New York City. He is usually to be found backpacking around the world with his guitar and has been on FM and Internet radio on both sides of the Atlantic.

Nish will be releasing the first single from his upcoming album in March and will be working with the acclaimed Blue Soap Music to organise a worldwide PR campaign as well as touring Britain, Europe and the USA through the year. He is usually to be found backpacking around the world with his guitar and has been on FM and Internet radio on both sides of the Atlantic.

Dave Sharp – The Alarm [+]

Free Admission

Davesharp2013

1989 saw the US release coast-to-coast hit album, Change, and #1 AOR single, ‘Sold Me Down the River’, from British rock band, The Alarm. Sadly, 1991 saw the surprise departure of the band’s lead singer…

Dave Sharp, co-founder of The Alarm had that previous year enlisted the help of legendary maverick record producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Willie Nelson & Leonard Cohen) to help cut his first solo record. It was a determined young man who walked through the doors at The Hit Factory NYC in December 1990, and in under a week Sharp’s album Hard Travlin’ had been recorded, mixed and delivered for release to IRS Records.

A relentless two-year period of Stateside touring followed including appearances at Farm Aid concerts and Earth Day celebrations before Sharp returned to New York City in 1992 to perform for an audience of 25,000 gathered in Central Park to celebrate the 80th birthday of folk legend Woody Guthrie. It was a seminal event for Dave Sharp who performed alongside Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Billy Bragg and shared the stage with The Right Reverend Jessie Jackson.

In 1996 Sharp once again teamed up with producer Bob Johnston entering Credence Clearwater Revival’s studio in San Francisco to record and release his second solo album, Downtown America. Two underground hits followed, ‘The Ghost of Preacher Casey’ and ‘Give Me Back My Job’, which both received healthy rotation across the board at American radio and led to television appearances on country music’s Nashville Network.

Sharp returned to the UK in 2002 to record his third solo album, The Power of Soul, released on Manchester’s Townsend Records, successfully re-introducing him to British audiences and earning him solo recognition across the UK with British music critics.

Dave Sharp’s solo albums have received positive critical recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and over the past decade and a half Sharp has been fortunate to work alongside many of the artists he has long respected. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash have appeared on his recordings. He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner. Whether solo or with a band, guitar in hand, Dave Sharp delivers the ”Spirit of Rock & Roll.”

His music has been described as everything from folk and blues to rock, country and punk; his performances as everything from legendary to lousy. However one word can never be used to describe Dave Sharp: ”Predictable.”

Dave Sharp has embraced mainstream popular culture whilst at the same time remaining one step away from its grasp . . . he likes it that way!

‘It’s a Mighty Hard Road to be Travlin’ Down.’ Dave Sharp writes it, sings it and lives it.

By The Sea make music that can’t contain itself, that is so bursting with joy it sounds like it is tripping over itself in its desire to get out of the speakers. There have been comparisons to early Stone Roses, The Go-Betweens and dreampop, but they are pulling on past influences and making them sound like the the most disorientating love affair that ever failed.

The Under Cover Hippy [+]

Free admission before 9pm, £4 thereafter

undercoverhippy1

Billy Rowan, aka The Undercover Hippy, is definitely not your average singer songwriter. His music brings together acoustic guitar, soulful vocals, infectious reggae rhythms, and the lyrical delivery of a skilled mc. After 7 years spent DJ’ing and MC’ing on the Drum & Bass circuit, Billy swapped the decks for a guitar and started out as a solo act in 2007. Although he still occasionally does solo gigs, he now usually plays with a full band, mixing guitars, keys, drums, bass, percussion and backing vocals to create a high energy, interactive and highly entertaining live show. Combining intelligent, provocative lyrics with dangerously catchy hooks and a feel good groove, this is music for the thinking man to shake his arse to. Think Jason Mraz meets The Cat Empire…on a protest march…at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The Sundowners are a five-piece band of siblings and friends from just across the Mersey, in The Wirral. They’re cooking up a melting pot of musical influences including Fleetwood Mac, Crosby Stills and Nash, Rolling Stones and Muddy Waters. After taking their time, writing real songs, putting on great gigs and capturing an avid audience around the country, they did a knockout performance on The BBC Introducing Stage at none other than Glastonbury Festival.

“The Sundowners are an undoubtedly exciting prospect with a very defined sense of who they are” – NME.

“Not many bands can say their first gig was a sell-out. The Mysterines however can. Still only in their teens, the trio led by the knockout vocal projection of lead Lia Metcalfe, set the scene aptly. Chiller-psych met with the bluesy-folk outer-tone of Metcalfe‘s past solo performances as bandmates, bassist George Favager and drummer Zak Mcdonnell, held it all together with tight, measured instrumentation. Three young musicians showing talent and professionalism well above their collective years.” Getintothis.com

Paul-Wilkes

I’ve enjoyed working with my new band and playing some boss gigs this year, including LIMF and Farm Feast Festival. Who knows what for 2016? I’ll be going to Glastonbury although haven’t been given a slot to play yet ha ha.

To finish off the year I will be playing an intimate show at the lovely Lantern Theatre in Liverpool on November 25th to celebrate my final release. The gig will be a very stripped back affair and I will be playing songs from everything I have ever released and talking about why and how, I had written the songs.

I’m already working on my debut solo album, which I hope to have finished in time for spring 2016. Most of the album will be previously unreleased stuff and instrumentals that I had written a few years back, that were used for TV programmes in the UK and Australia. I have now turned these instrumentals into songs with lyrics and parts. The album will feature string sections, piano and lots of dreamy, ethereal and cinematic sounds.
