Murder Murder W/Tom Durkin [+]

Free admission before 9pm, £4 thereafter

Murder murder poster telfs2

Murder Murder is a Bloodgrass band (Bluegrass + Outlaw Country + Exclusively Murder Ballads) hailing from the frozen forests of the Ontario Northland. Their tales of death are filled with life by the kick of the suitcase, saw of the fiddle, and roll of the banjo.

As devoted fans of bluegrass, traditional music, and folk music, we were drawn to the murky ethical themes of the murder ballad form and to its enduring nature. Many of the earliest examples are the sole surviving records of victims of violent crimes. Oftentimes murder ballads capture the essence and atmosphere of a dark, lawless and violent frontier. Northern Ontario, although never romanticized in the way that the Wild West or the far north during the gold rush era were, was once such a place – with a wealth of stories and characters. The lack of mythology associated with Northern Ontario is troubling, and thus we felt it our responsibility to create our own mythology.

Press:

“The singers pour honey on brutality… fit to captivate any crowd in Canada” – Grayowl Point

“Brilliant high-spirited performance here, with dark and compelling twists and turns.”
-Jeff Liberty, Take Liberty on CBC New Brunswick

“By crafting their own fatal tunes, the boys of Murder Murder have taken this century-old tradition and added a unique mark on the contemporary Canadian folk community.” – quipmag.ca

“There’s a lot to love despite all the spilled blood.” -Grayowl Point

“Flipping a genre on its head has never been more subversive, or fun.” -Adam Carter, CBC Hamilton

“J’aime vraiment l’énergie du band, puisqu’il me fait penser à un groupe du Québec comme Canaille, avec un petit côté à la Hank III. Je sais que ce n’est pas très « core » pour le site, mais j’adore… Qu’est-ce que tu veux!” – Antonio Geraldo, feelcore.ca

“No doubt there will be other great albums and bands coming along this year, but it really doesn’t get any better than this.” – AmericanRootsUK.com

THE BIGGEST BIG KID PARTY INVITATION YOU’LL EVER RECEIVE!

unicorn

Oh yes, I’ve been scheming and the lovely people at Telfords have agreed to my crazy idea too!

You’re invited to leave your problems at the door and have some grown-up play time with the Happiness Ninja! Pop on a uni-horn, play a game, do some colouring in, raid the fancy dress box – it’s your time to indulge your inner child and have an excuse to act like a knob for a couple of hours!

You see play brings joy – it’s vital for problem solving, creativity and relationships. Some activities put your brain into alpha state (aka fun party mode) which helps with stress, anxiety and depression too! It’s been proven by brainy scientists too!

Go grab a ticket – places are limited so ‘do an organised’ and get booked on (it’ll help me work out how many party bags to make up too) and the suggested contribution for our play date is £15 to cover materials and stuff xxx
?
p.s. boozy drinks and scoff will be available to purchase from our lovely hosts too, yay!

Chester Live – Campfire Social/Peaness [+]

Free admission before 9pm, £4 thereafter

campfire-social-01

Llangollen / Chester-based 5 piece, Campfire Social, are a refuge from the wild woods all around. Their incandescent, melodic songs take the intimate heartbreak of Elliott Smith and embellish with golden harmonies borrowed from The Beach Boys. They’re the soundtrack to a touching and woozily nostalgic indie film, something by Jason Reitman or Lenny Abrahamson, as filmed in golden tones on the England / northeast Wales borders. Campfire Social grew out of the ashes of the very highly regarded, and lamented, Shy & the Fight (Radio 1, 6Music airplay; multiple festival appearances; debut single on Popty Ping Records). Tom was that band’s chief songwriter. Campfire Social is an uplifting and incredibly beguiling refinement of his talents. Tom sums his songwriting philosophy up in typically unshowy fashion: “it’s about taking a personal subject that I think everyone can relate to and giving it life by adding a hopeful melody.” If the shadows and monsters are getting to you, Campfire Social are a sanctuary of warmest humanity and crackling, luminous melancholy. The kind of melancholy that makes the heart flutter and take flight. Come and sit next to them. There’s plenty of room for everyone.

peaness header 1

Three piece indie-pop band Peaness formed in Chester, England in late 2014. The debut EP “No Fun” was released Aug 20th 2015 and is available online now. They have been featured on BBC Introducing with their singles “Fortune Favours The Bold” and “Summer Song” as well as the BBC Introducing show on BBC 6 Music with “I’m Not Your Problem”. They played a sold out show at this years Swn Festival, Cardiff and are already booked to play a number of independent music festivals across the country in 2016. They will also be heading back to the studio at the end of the year.
