The Immediate [+]

Free before 9pm…£4 after

imm_orange_and_blue

The Immediate are a thee-piece power pop band from Mold in north Wales.

We originally split in 1997 due to frustration, an argument over a mouth organ and the success of Stereophonics.

We released one single (unaccountably popular in Sweden), made every conceivable mistake in the How To Be A Successful Indie Band handbook, toured with some excellent bands (Mansun, 60ft Dolls, Dodgy) and flickered out, leaving behind the memory of some great gigs, a few fine songs, and little else.

Earlier this year, we reconvened to repair friendships and renew tinnitus. New songs came much more easily than the old ones, probably because we are playing to please only ourselves – with no thoughts of success or acclaim – for the first time in our existence.

There is more truth and resonance in our songs now than ever before. And power. And invention. We write songs about hope and love in the face of the moribund, daily grind.

You will possibly hear fragments and echoes of the following artists in our sound (The Jam, Wire, XTC, Pixies, Badfinger, Dr Feelgood, Small Faces, Husker Du, The Who, Ride, Big Star, The Cure, Joy Formidable, The Go-Betweens, Teenage Fanclub), but nothing has been plagiarised or misappropriated to mask a deficiency of our own ideas.

Our new EP, Shadows and Ghosts (available via: http://theimmediate.bandcamp.com/ from Friday 2nd September) smoulders with melodicism, melancholy and power.

We hope you enjoy it.

Blackbeard’s Tea Party [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Blackbeard's Tea Party 2

Gutsy folk rock, brought kicking and screaming into the

21st Century.

Funky folk tunes, swashbuckling songs and an infectious stage energy. Blackbeard’s Tea Party mix fiddles & squeezeboxes, guitar noise & synth bass, and a feast of international percussion to bring you an unforgettable folk?rock extravaganza. Grounded in English traditions, but flirting shamelessly with a plethora of exotic musical avenues, they create a sound that is equal parts tasty, dramatic and danceable.

“Inventive, witty folk rock with guts… Being bound for hell never sounded so exciting.” Bright Young Folk

“This, simply, is the business. *****” R2 Magazine

“Blackbeard’s Tea Party really are honest-to-God party monsters.” fRoots

“A powerhouse demonstration.” The Living Tradition

Together since 2009, the band has quickly developed a reputation as one of the most formidable live acts on the circuit. In the early days, before they knew it they had sold out venues in their home town of York. Word spread rapidly, and the band began to play gigs further afield, including a number of festival bookings through 2010 and 2011, with many big festival highlights in 2012. In the last two years they have played many of the major folk festivals in the UK: Shrewsbury, Cambridge, Beverley, Grassington, Warwick, Broadstairs and Sidmouth, as well as appearances at Whitby, Galtres and many more.

After the release of Heavens to Betsy (2009) the band’s distinct sound was picked up by Mike Harding, who played Blackbeard’s Tea Party on his weekly BBC Radio 2 folk show.

Following the release of Tomorrow We’ll Be Sober (2011, *****, R2 Magazine), the six-piece folk-rock band are currently embarked upon their second UK tour in. This run of live dates coincides with the promotion of their second full-length album, the highly anticipated Whip Jamboree; which scampered up the Amazon mp3 Folk Charts to enjoy the view at #4 for the duration of the band’s April tour; “the best party going on 5 inches of plastic.” (**** R2 Magazine May/June 2013 issue)

Blackbeard’s Tea Party were recognised as one of the best live bands in the UK in the 2011 FATEA Awards; with the success of 2012 and 2013, 2014 is seeing these funky, folky, beat-happy pirates going stratospheric in their quest for full scale world domination.

Blind Boy Paxton [+]

£12 Entry

bbbanjo_oak

Meet Jerron Paxton,  a modern day songster, minstrel and bluesman.

His name is Jerron  (say Jer-Ron, giving it two distinct Rs) Paxton, but apparently you can call him “Blind Boy” if you want to.

Jerron Paxton is truly the living embodiment of the true blues in the 21St Century, but he plays it all in the true songster tradition: ragtime, hokum, old-time, French reels, Appalachian mountain music and blues and more – and whatever he plays sounds great .

The young bard was born in 1989, but his vast talent rivals the greatest in the genre. He is the whole package. He’s witty, fast rhyming, poetic, fun, exciting, wonderfully skilled as a musician and a fine singer, he is the continuation of a proud tradition, literally and figuratively. It’s hard to tell at times when Jerron Paxton, a consummate entertainer,  is putting on an act, when he takes his act to real life and when life starts and the act ends. He seemingly appeals to  audiences into the old-times look and sound, but it could also be, as he told the countryblues.com “I just like wearing overalls.”  The artist has even reported to be the real-life son of Robert Johnson’s cousin. At first glance he looks like he’s playing the part of a bluesman in a Hollywood movie, dressed with theatrical retro-schtick, with some type of  various hats, from Derbies to Orthodox Jewish kippa. The tall, corpulent young man almost looks like a young Willie Dixon, and he is smart to make hay when the grass is high, marketing himself directly to the segment of the blues community with a great nostalgic hunger for authentic musicians that accurately portray the image of the romanticized 1930s rural minstrel. It could be that for now, his closest local support group is the Jalopy Theater scene in Brooklyn, where there is an active old time community. For people who are bothered by the way Jerron Paxton, the real-life throwback to the old days, dresses on stage, the old adage applies “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Let him dress the way he wants to. He knows what he is doing. All that matters is that he plays his heart out, and he is one smart young man.

Dave Sharp [+]

Davesharp2013

1989 saw the US release coast-to-coast hit album, Change, and #1 AOR single, ‘Sold Me Down the River’, from British rock band, The Alarm. Sadly, 1991 saw the surprise departure of the band’s lead singer…

Dave Sharp, co-founder of The Alarm had that previous year enlisted the help of legendary maverick record producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Willie Nelson & Leonard Cohen) to help cut his first solo record. It was a determined young man who walked through the doors at The Hit Factory NYC in December 1990, and in under a week Sharp’s album Hard Travlin’ had been recorded, mixed and delivered for release to IRS Records.

A relentless two-year period of Stateside touring followed including appearances at Farm Aid concerts and Earth Day celebrations before Sharp returned to New York City in 1992 to perform for an audience of 25,000 gathered in Central Park to celebrate the 80th birthday of folk legend Woody Guthrie. It was a seminal event for Dave Sharp who performed alongside Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Billy Bragg and shared the stage with The Right Reverend Jessie Jackson.

In 1996 Sharp once again teamed up with producer Bob Johnston entering Credence Clearwater Revival’s studio in San Francisco to record and release his second solo album, Downtown America. Two underground hits followed, ‘The Ghost of Preacher Casey’ and ‘Give Me Back My Job’, which both received healthy rotation across the board at American radio and led to television appearances on country music’s Nashville Network.

Sharp returned to the UK in 2002 to record his third solo album, The Power of Soul, released on Manchester’s Townsend Records, successfully re-introducing him to British audiences and earning him solo recognition across the UK with British music critics.

Dave Sharp’s solo albums have received positive critical recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and over the past decade and a half Sharp has been fortunate to work alongside many of the artists he has long respected. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash have appeared on his recordings. He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner. Whether solo or with a band, guitar in hand, Dave Sharp delivers the ”Spirit of Rock & Roll.”

His music has been described as everything from folk and blues to rock, country and punk; his performances as everything from legendary to lousy. However one word can never be used to describe Dave Sharp: ”Predictable.”

Dave Sharp has embraced mainstream popular culture whilst at the same time remaining one step away from its grasp . . . he likes it that way!

‘It’s a Mighty Hard Road to be Travlin’ Down.’ Dave Sharp writes it, sings it and lives it.

Halloween Weekender W/1968 [+]

Free before 9pm…£4 and your soul after

1968 Haloween

1968 formed in 2013 and after burning out the first batteries that were loaded into their fuzz pedals it was apparent that there was something heavy enough to crack the sky. Following the first primitive jams, the valves warmed up and the drumsticks splintered into a beautiful yet thunderous avalanche of sound. Featuring the vocals of 27 year old, J.R. Lazarus, formerly of Jokers Hour and the bottom of many liquor bottles, coupled with the six string assault of Sam Orr’s Marshall powered guitar. The band’s engine is left in the capable hands of Tom Drury who provides a beat that would make even the angriest of cavemen shudder back into their cave, this is supported by The Bear, some say he could eat three times the average human, the band say he could eat three humans whilst slamming the fuzziest yet grooviest bass lines this side of Harlem. They are promising to shake all of your bones at Telford’s this Halloween weekend, so bring your drinking boots and set sail for 1968.

Halloween Weekender W/The Jokers [+]

Free entry before 9pm…£4 after 9pm

The-Jokers-Logo-bandW_300x200-300x200

The Jokers, who hail from the North West of England, were formed in 2006, with the aim of creating the world’s greatest rock and roll band. Their debut album, ‘The Big Rock ‘N’ Roll Show’, while mixed by Mike Fraser in Vancouver, (straight after he had mixed AC/DC’s 10 million plus selling Black Ice album), was only recorded in guitarist Paul Hurst’s Liverpool living room, with duvets hanging on the walls to help the sound and provide a makeshift vocal booth.

Released in June 2009, ‘The Big Rock ‘N’ Roll Show’ was awarded 8/10 in Classic Rock’s Summer 2009 issue by scribe Dom Lawson, who stated that “If you’re going to start nominating yourself for the intermittently vacant position of rock’n’roll standard bearers, you’d better have the sound, the swagger and the songs. Fortunately, The Jokers have all three in large amounts. Frontman Wayne Parry has one of those voices designed to incite a riot of dancing and Olympic standard drinking, and every song is alive with a real sense of joyful bonhomie. Most attempts to nail that elusive rock’n’roll spirit fall flat because the band simply don’t have the juice. The Jokers, meanwhile, are swimming in it.” The band then spent two years on the road building a substantial live following supporting the likes of Hawkwind, Y&T, Joe Elliot & The Down N Outz, Argent, Anvil and Fozzy, selling over 8000 CD’s and 6,000 downloads of ‘The Big Rock ‘N’ Roll Show’ on their own independent record label along the way.

The jokers then hooked up with producer Andy Macpherson (Eric Clapton, The Who, Barclay James Harvest, The Buzzcocks etc), and began writing their second album, ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Is Alive’, in his Revolution Studio in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire, early in 2011. After two years of perfectionist recording and mixing sessions, ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Is Alive’ was finally mastered by Tim Young at Metropolis studios in London in February 2013. When massive hard rock label SPV/Steamhammer’s Head Of A&R Olly Hahn heard the album he immediately offered the Jokers a worldwide record deal and scheduled ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Is Alive’ for release in September 2013. Packed with glorious, fluid lead guitar licks, vivid, expressive vocals, groove ridden bass lines and crisp, cracking drums, ‘Rock ‘N Roll Is Alive’ received rave reviews on release; “This second serving from the hard touring foursome is full of sure-footed grit: complete with crystal clear riffing and tight, anthemic tendencies” noted Steve Bailey in Guitar Magazine. Fireworks Magazine’s Alan Holloway stated “They sound like a healthy mix of The Black Crowes, Chickenfoot and AC/DC, albeit with their own mojo throughout. Opener ‘Silver City’ has a great melody and guitar base, whilst ‘Let It Rock’ is very AC/DC but ‘NYC’ has a wonderful smooth feel backed up by a guitar part that brings to mind the theme from ‘School Of Rock’.” Powerplay writer Steve Swift pronounced “Buffoons need not apply here; this is serious business and these Jokers deliver. 9/10”

Gothic Fayre and Halloween Open Mic Hosted by Rusty [+]

The Darkness and the flame will claim me,
My soul at last will crave no more.
My repentance will be over
And all my guilt will soon be yours.

Don’t kill a wizard’s cat- they have nine lives for a start, and wizards tend to care more about animals than people, and their revenge is often over the top.

In the year 2000, Telfords Warehouse was virtually destroyed by fire. The only mortal remains found were those of a cat. The ghost has not been seen since.

Many people have seen the Telfords ghosts, but not the young kitchen maid. She hasn’t been seen since the fire, and tonight after years of painstaking research at the bar, Rusty is finally ready to tell her story.

Before that we celebrate halloween with a gothic fayre with tarot cards, palmistry and all things black- nay noir.
Admission is free all day with the fayre running 1.30 until 6 and open mic slots are available with the list closing at 8.30 for a nine o’clock show.
