Martyn Joseph [+]

Tickets £16.50

see

MJPD-4106

Martyn Joseph is as performer like no other.

He’s a jaw dropping guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style, teamed up with a powerful show stopping voice, and has been called “The Welsh Springsteen”, but there are also shades of John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews there may be – but he stands in his own right, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives.

Juxtaposition is a key theme in Martyn’s work. The simplicity and the complexity of the human condition and all that it encompasses is underpinned with a heady promise of hope. There is a versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures, and stories, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman.

2014 saw him take the spirit of his music onto a more practical footing with the launch of his “Let Yourself Trust”, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to make a small difference out of great love and commitment by challenging injustice wherever it’s found, educating via advocacy, campaigning for human rights, and raising issues that have been forgotten or ignored via fundraising initiatives, thus bringing about greater awareness for beautiful people in powerless situations.

Autumn 2015 marked the release of Martyn’s brand new studio album, “Sanctuary” and he’ll be showcasing these new songs, along with other familiar and much loved material.

Martyn Joseph. A unique talent driven by passion and love for his trade, continues to write, sing and play from the heart.

CAT SCRATCH FEVER [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

cat scratch

Being a peculiar Liverpool cult band in the mid 1990s…..Featuring Paul Kappa as Dr. Hank B. Death….. a frock coated ,Colt Navy totin’ guitar player, ripping Country and Eastern apart, with his faithful pals Tox and Two-Gun Tennessee Slim

Cat Scratch Fever. A disease that you can catch. A cursory search of the web shows that Cat Scratch Fever is quite nasty, and that’s even before making reference to Ted Nugent.

Two ex members of Liverpool group ‘The Lawnmower’ Tony Doyle (The Accelerators, Simply Red, Bo Jelly) and D.A. Dolman ( The Moondogs, The Beach Bastards) asked Paul Kappa (The Blimey Brothers, The Cathedral, Candy Store Rock, Up and Running) in the late summer of 1992 if he would join with them in a musical appreciation of all things Sun Session. It was for a couple of gigs, and just for a kick. They played The Casablanca Club on Hope St. Liverpool and the reaction was so good they did it again and again and again, until in 1998, after more than 1800 gigs, Paul quit the band.

In those six years, they appeared at Glastonbury (1997) and Cropredy (1998), incidentally Paul’s last ever gig with the band. They appeared on MTV (big deal!) ITV, and Channel One cable!!! They were regulars with Mark Lamaar on his afternoon show on GLR, brodcast from Baker St. in London.

This line up of Cat Scratch Fever broke up in 1998, after what would be most pleasantly described as ‘personal differences’, or, put plainly that Dolman and Kappa didn’t like each other very much! Oh, the politics of making music. The two albums and off-shoot singles and EPs recorded were ‘Death Western’ and ‘The Big Bang!’

The first album ‘Death Western’ was begun in April 1994, and was recorded in Rick Rock’s ‘Wand Studios’ in a basement underneath a decrepit fish and chip shop, last decorated on VE day, and with fish stocks from the same era. Often the boys would eat their suppers there, warmed by undertable heating; surely one of the Seven Wonders of East Acton. Dolman and Doyle both contracted food poisoning and were forced to play the regular Wednesday gig in Guinans on Slater Street, Liverpool sitting down, and running to the toilet often.

LEWIS HAMILTON BAND [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

The Lewis Hamilton Band

From an early age Lewis listened to wide range of music. When he turned twelve years old, he was given a Squire Stratocaster™, his first electric guitar. Taking influence from great guitarists such as, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton, he quickly developed a passion for guitar led ‘Blues-Rock’ and spent hours every day learning tips and tricks from his idols. Now, at the age of twenty Lewis has developed a guitar style that has been compared to Joe Bonamassa and Eric Johnson. Vocally, he takes influence from the likes of Dave Mathews and John Mayer and writes his own music. Over the years he has performed with such notable musicians as Aynsley Lister (for whom he filled in vocals at a live show), Ryan McGarvey, Henrik Freischlader, Alan Nimmo, Chantel McGregor and Ben Poole. Lewis also has talent for recording and runs his own studio in Auchterarder, Scotland, where all his music is written, recorded, produced, mixed and mastered by Lewis himself.

Since their formation in August 2010 The Lewis Hamilton Band have been booked for over 400 shows from Shetland to Poland, and have appeared at most of the UK’s biggest blues festivals, including Main Stage performances at Hebden Bridge and Maryport. As a guitarist he pays tribute to some of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, taking influence from people like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher. He also incorporates playing styles from more modern blues-rock musicians such as, Joe Bonamassa, Derek Trucks and Matt Scofield. As a vocalist he has developed his own unique and powerful style of singing, while taking influence from the likes of Joe Cocker and Dave Mathews. His debut album Gambling Machine won the Scottish New Music Award for Scottish Jazz/Blues album of the year for 2012. Candlelight & Sympathy from Empty Roads will feature on the soundtrack of a new feature film ‘Scar Tissue’. His third album Ghost Train has had numerous top reviews and acclaim from magazines and websites worldwide, and airplay in over 15 countries. In addition to his previous nominations in the 2012 and 2013 British Blues Awards and receiving two preliminary nominations in their song-writing category, Lewis has been nominated yet again as YOUNG ARTIST of the Year in 2014.

Funk/Soul/Hip Hop/Pop/Rock/Music….

” If you look back over the last fifty or sixty years of popular music, there’s literally millions of songs and records out there that still sound just as good today as when they were released. My mate Ed said ‘If it can be played now then it’s a now record.’ I tend to agree, but that’s only half the story. These days, when I DJ I want to blend all those hip tracks from back in the day with contemporary stuff because whether you like it or not, good music is being released all the time. I love big fat electronic beats, trippy bleeps and massive bass etc. It’s all about striking the right balance on the dancefloor… and having fun.” Tony Bear
