Regularly performing across the UK, alongside many reputable acts, they have built up a substantial live fan base and have made frequent appearances on the Adam Walton show on BBC Radio Wales having also recorded a live session for the show. this has led to interest elsewhere including being a top pick on montreal’s cism radio station. And even more recently the band were surprised to hear their song had been played a couple of times on Jen longs introducing show on BBC radio 1.

Chubby Knuckles presents… The Jar Family [+]

Free Entry Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Formed in 2010, Hartlepool band The Jar Family is a collective of singer-songwriters Max Bianco, Dali, Al Devon, Richie Docherty, Chris Hooks and former Squeeze bassist Keith Wilkinson.

Providing an escape from the backdrop of their hometown’s economic hardships, and driven by a collective will to succeed, The Jar Family have forged a distinctive style of north-east blues & roots, uniquely coined as ‘Industrial Folk’, which, following a series of sell-out acoustic shows, and the July 2010 release of their now highly collectable ‘Livingston Studio E.P.’, the band quickly built a loyal fan-base.

Having amassed such a sizeable collection of songs, the band decamped to the seminal Sawmill Studio to record ‘The Jar Family Album’ in June 2011, but not before adding the in-demand Kerry ‘jubjub’ Edwards on Cajon to complete the 7-piece line-up. Produced by Keith Wilkinson, the album was then mixed by the legendary John Cornfield (Muse, Supergrass, Razorlight, Oasis, Athlete).

In addition to being very well received by the national music press, their debut single, ‘Poolie Strut’ became the most requested song in Radio Hartlepool’s history and has since been played at all of Hartlepool United’s home matches, leading to the home faithful chanting the song on the terraces.

November 2011 then saw the release of The Jar Family’s second single ‘In For A Penny’ which preceded the band’s first ever UK tour, supporting the infamous Alabama 3, gaining them many new fans as they further enhanced their reputation as the north-east’s buzz band.

Throughout 2012 they have opened for Ocean Colour Scene’s Steve Craddock, followed by a run of tour dates and festival appearances across the UK, including slots opening for The Charlatans and Babyshambles, Ren Harvieu, The Sunshine Underground, King Charles, Jake Bugg etc., as they prepare for the release of their new single, ‘Broken Minded’ on August 6th. Their debut album ‘The Jar Family Album’ is available on i-tunes and will soon be available in selected stores as well as from the bands sparkling new online store.

Chubby Knuckles presents… Flipron [+]

Free Entry Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

With lyrical inventiveness & surreal imagination right at the very core of their songs & with an unmistakably English sound shamelessly veering between psychedelic power-pop, dark, poetic introspection & dusty, barrel-house stompers, this is the band hailed by as ‘the most original band in the UK.’

As we emerge into 2013 Flipron have released their fourth album Firework Shoes with legendary Damned drummer Rat Scabies in the producer’s chair & it is set to be their best yet with many of the new songs already firm favourites with fans at gigs. It also features The Comet Returns, a unique collaboration with Specials front man, toaster & singer Neville Staple.

In 2011, as well as writing & developing material for the new album, Flipron were invited to play at SWSX in Austin, Texas where they premiered the single The Stupidest Face in Town, which was released later that spring. Steve Lamacq championed the single on BBC6music & declared it “one of my favourite songs around at the moment” Other highlights of the year included a headline show at the 100 Club as well sets at Glastonbury & other festivals. In 2010 they released the single The Coolest Names in Showbiz , played a 10 date residency at the Edinburgh Fringe & toured in the USA including New York, L.A. & Nashville.

Since they released their debut album Fancy Blues & Rustique Novelties in 2004, which was greeted by the Observer Music Monthly with a glowing 4* review from esteemed music journalist Charles Shaar Murray, they have been steadily fermenting a reputation based around their live performances and a succession of unique and critically acclaimed albums and singles. Their second album, Biscuits For Cerberus was AIM CEO Alison Wenham’s Best Record Of 2006 in Music Week. 2008’s Gravity Calling, produced by Rat Scabies, was Album of the Year in THE MICK magazine & Album of the Week in the Belfast Telegraph.

They have recorded numerous radio sessions on a variety of UK stations, including Mark Lamarr’s God’s Jukebox on BBC Radio2, (Lamarr described their session as “absolutely fantastic” & featured again in his best sessions of 2009) as well as 4 sessions on BBC 6music. Radio DJs who have played the band include on BBC Radio1 Vic Galloway, Huw Stevens & Rob Da Bank, on BBC Radio2 Jonathan Ross, Mark Lamarr & Alex Lester, on BBC 6music Tom Robinson, Phil Jupitus, Mark Riley, Gideon Coe, Steve Lamacq, Mark Lamarr again, Nemone & Shaun Keaveny. Their music has also received radio play in the United States, Japan, Australia & much of Europe. In addition their music has been used by BBC television & radio & Channel Four in numerous programmes & trails.

Flipron have opened for acts as diverse as the Alabama 3, Donovan, Hayseed Dixie & the Beat, & have played numerous times at Glastonbury Festival, -in 2008 playing a record 6 Glasto shows in the one weekend. They’ve played main stages at Beautiful Daze, Secret Garden Party, Bloom, Endorse It In Dorset, 2000 Trees, Off the Tracks, Nibley & Shambala, as well as appearances at Bestival, End Of The Road,  Lovebox Weekender, Innocent Village Fete, Larmer Tree, Trowbridge Pump Festival, Lewes Folk & Rock, Strawberry Fair & many others. They have also performed at traditional style arts festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe, Concrete & Glass in London, The Times Cheltenham Literary Festival, Brighton Festival, Dorchester Festival, the Bath Fringe & the Llangollen Fringe. They’ve played gigs in boats, boxing rings & bars; cider barns, restaurants & cabarets; cellars, tents & strip shows: theatres, ballrooms & colleges. They’ve entertained skinheads, hippies, Tennessee housewives, New York folkies, Somerset truck drivers, painfully cool London art students, & even Holy Grail hunters in the south of France.

Chubby Knuckles presents… Extra Love [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Extra Love are a ten-piece band from Manchester who throw a variety of spices into the Reggae/Dub pot; creating their own distinctive and very danceable flavour. With big vibes, grooves to make you move your waist line, and deep bass that rolls all the way down your spine…this band is in it’s natural habitat when mashing up dancefloors all over the land. Expect equal helpings of conscious music and un self-conscious dancing at an Extra Love gig…
With a formidable rhythm section laying down a foundation that’s as much influenced by the funky sounds of Afrobeat as it is the sounds of Reggae and Dancehall, skanks and soundscape pranks from the guitar and keys and powerful, vital lines from the trio of jazzy hornsmen, two charismatic vocalists complete the line up. Kuntri Ranks (aka. The Lion King) is a respected Reggae veteran, who has previously had to fill the rather large boots of Prince Far I with the pioneering ‘world’ music group Sons Of Arqa. The Greek ying to Mr.Ranks’ Jamaican yang is Angelos Gavriilidis; a melodic and passionate singer / lyricist whose vast musical output encompasses everything from acoustic singer/songwiter ditties to downright filthy Techno productions.
The musicians in the band are young but surprisingly experienced professionals; what they lack in wrinkles and mortgage commitments they certainly do not lack in passion! Each individual regularly performs in a myriad of styles and other projects. All of these influences rub shoulders when the band kick out the jams, creating the progressive Extra Love sound. A sound which is steeped in but refuses to be solely confined to the ‘Reggae ting’.
Extra Love and its members have shared the stage with top international artists such as Afrikan Simba, Top Cat, Channel One, The Beat, Rico Rodriguez (The Specials), Craig Charles, Ariya Astrabeat Arkestra, Kenny Knotts, Finley Quaye, Gentlemen’s Dub Club, The Undertones, Beats and Pieces and many more. The band can often be found spreading the love vibrations on the festival scene as well as appearing regularly at venues and clubs across their native North West and beyond. The band have also recently launched their own night in Manchester, inviting top similar-minded bands and DJ’s to join the party…and what a party it’s turning out to be! The band are currently looking to bring the party to the international stage, everywhere can use more love…

Chubby Knuckles Present… The Roseville Band [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

1. The Roseville Band 2013 web

Exciting Welsh music makers The Roseville Band return with their eagerly anticipated third album Temper. The band, who hail from the green country of North Wales, deliver explosive driven rock ‘n’ roll, and have been patiently building a reputation for their high energy live shows and stadium filling potential, which threatens to be fulfilled with this new offering. Forming the creative nucleus of the band are the guitarist brothers Andy and Steve Jones, who grew up in the North Wales countryside, in a house — Roseville — which over time drew in a community of friends and musicians from the surrounding area, giving rise to The Roseville Band in late 2006.

Having developed a cult following in their native Wales with the releases of their first two albums, Little Eyes In The Universe(PIAS 2010) and Shake The Walls (PIAS 2011), the band have earned support and mentions from the likes of NME, The Guardian and a host of online bloggers. Debuting with sessions and airplay on XFM, BBC Wales and Balcony TV, they’ve since progressed to reach new audiences around the world with press and airplays across Europe, the USA and Canada.

Live, The Roseville Band have a commendably intense work ethic — 500+ shows to date — establishing their reputation as fervently committed performers. An eventual tour of Europe, alongside triumphant performances at Glastonbury Festival, Sound City, and FOCUS Wales were eventually topped off with invitations to perform across the pond at Canadian Music Week and NXNE. During these trips the band previewed new material, attracting new industry admirers, resulting in them being dubbed “Standout International Act of NXNE 2012,” and later being signed to Pipe & Hat Records in Canada.

2013 finds the band as a leaner four-piece, and now, bringing a more aggressive and alternative slant to their music, which has them primed for new frontiers upon the imminent release of Temper. The new album is sure to catch many by surprise, and particularly those familiar with the band’s first two LPs, which largely reflected the band’s earlier influences, where echoes of Dylan and The Band featured heavily. By contrast Temper is a completely different beast, seeing the band finally coming into their own and posing a far more intriguing and ambitious proposition to that of their previous offerings. “Take It” and title track “Temper” highlight this exciting new chapter as well as any, presenting a band loaded with ideas and a new approach that sets them apart from their contemporaries.

This is the music of a band that has experienced life and the world on the road, providing them with new territories into which they willingly delve, culminating in a new record full of melodrama, verve, and a gut punching force that draws on everything from The Clash and Echo & The Bunnymen to fresher influences such as Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse. Brought to life by a freshly charged rhythm section, dark brooding guitars, and vocal melodies you could hang your coat on, they all play their own significant part in creating an explosive new sound that’s set to light up stages and airwaves alike.

Rackhouse Pilfer [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

advace tickets available from*

The rise of RACKHOUSE PILFER is unstoppable. They have been enthralling crowds throughout Ireland and Nashville and were Special Guests to Imelda May at SLIGO LIVE in October where they were a big hit with the audience, so much so that Imelda May invited them to join her for other dates.

Rackhouse Pilfer 1

RACKHOUSE PILFER formed in 2012 by the fireside of McGarrigles bar in Sligo, performing an acoustic set of bluegrass and folk hits from their favourite Americana artists. It wasn’t long before they had to be plugged in to be heard due to their growing popularity. In that short time they have supported Imelda May, Paul Brady, Mundy, Royseven, Beoga, Birds of Chicago (USA), Cabin Collective, Leo Moran of the Saw Doctors, Steve Craddock Band Band (of Ocean Colour Scene). They have shared the stage with Kila, Brian Kennedy, Jack L, Fiachna O’Braonain, Eleanor McEvoy, Republic of Loose, Sandy Kelly, Charlie McGettigan, Lumiere. As well as their nationwide tour, fans will also see them support Damien Dempsey.

March 2013 saw the release of their debut album “Back to the country”, filling the Model Arts Centre, Sligo to capacity. ‘Back to the Country’ was warmly received by critics with Americana UK magazine giving it 7/10.

Following the release of their first album RACKHOUSE PILFER took their electric and energetic stage show to some of Irelands biggest festivals and venues including the world famous Omagh Folk Park Bluegrass festival, Body and Soul, Sligo Live 2012 and 2013 where they opened for headliner Imelda May, Monaghan Blues Festival, Whelan’s, The Empire, Monroe’s, Crane Lane and many more. They set off on their first European tour in the summer of 2013, performing at festivals in Italy, Switzerland and France which included a storming performance and standing ovation at ‘La Roche Sur Foron’ – widely regarded as Europe’s biggest Bluegrass Festival.

January 2014 saw RACKHOUSE PILFER jet off to Nashville, Tennessee to record their new album of all original tracks entitled “LOVE AND HAVOC” at Alex the Great studios with producer Brad Jones. Brad has worked with a long list of Pop, Rock and Alternative Country artists including Steve Earl, John Prine, John Hiatt, Josh Rouse and Bobby Bare Jr. “LOVE AND HAVOC” features 12 tracks penned by RACKHOUSE PILFER, most of which feature the stomping uproar you might expect from this band, but there are a few twists to the plot. While in Nashville RACKHOUSE PILFER were invited to play at the legendary Station Inn, Nashville’s most famous traditional Bluegrass venue where over the years the best of the best in this genre have graced its stage. They were also asked to perform on the “Viva Nashvegas” live internet stream music show. At the Station Inn they played to a star studded audience including actress Mary Steenburgen, musical legends, cast members and the production team of the TV show ‘Nashville’. They were invited to perform on stage with an all-star band which included Jeff Hanna (lead singer with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), Fred Eltringham (Drummer with Sheyl Crow), Mike Bub (Bass player, Steve Earle Band & Del McCoury Band), Legendary Guitarist Guthrie Trapp and many more. This was followed by an invitation on stage as guests at the Grand Ole Opry by Country Music Legend George Hamilton the IV.

They were invited to perform with John Carter-Cash, son of Johnny Cash as his special guests together with Raelyn Nelson, Granddaughter of Willie Nelson.

The legendary Harold Bradley features on two of the tracks from their new album ‘LOVE AND HAVOC’. Harold Bradley, now 88 years old is regarded by many as being the most recorded guitar player in history and played on many hit records with Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Jerry Lee lewis among others. If you’ve ever listened to any of these artists then you have heard Harold Bradley play. Harold was most famous for inventing a style called ‘Tic Tac’ bass guitar and he joined Rackhouse Pilfer at their recording session in Nashville to play his legendary ‘Tic Tac’ guitar on two of the album tracks “Angela” and “Me and a Polar Bear”. Having Harold Bradley record with the band on these two songs was a real honour for Rackhouse Pilfer.

Sligo film maker Colin Gillen travelled to Nashville to document Rackhouse Pilfer as part of a film documentary about the band which will be released following the album launch.

RACKHOUSE PILFER write, record and perform all of their own songs. Some of their influences include Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earl, Ryan Adams and John Hiatt. Their line-up is Leon Mooney – acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals, Willie Kelly – acoustic guitar, drums and vocals, Fiachra Cunningham – fiddle, dobro, and vocals, Mark McGovern – tenor/5 string banjo and vocals, Leslie Jones – Mandolin and vocals and Hugh Feely – double bass and vocals.

“LOVE AND HAVOC” will be available in stores and digitally online from 28th March 2014.
