Crackling Vinyl Presesnt…. Gallops [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

“Gallops customarily serve up instrumental soundscapes that match metallic brawn with a serrated electronic edge…. attending to both cerebral and dancefloor pleasures.” MOJO

Out of the unassuming Welsh town of Wrexham, Gallops re-emerge having expanded their tight, punchy math-rock constructions into something of a more panoramic scope for debut LP Yours Sincerely, Dr. Hardcore. A group who take all you know about the more technical, leftfield strands of the musical periphery and turn them inside out, they express a joy in the freedom of being able to jump between time signatures and textures, rather than treating such dexterity as a po-faced exercise in instrument proficiency.

Gallops first streaked into view in 2010 with a self-titled EP, following that up with Record Store Day release ‘Joust/Eukodol’. Even between those two releases the group’s thirst for progression was evident, but so too was their desire for fun whilst doing it, tracks bouncing round with the giddiness of a pinball in a machine. That infectious energy was seized upon by many, leading to performances at 2011’s SXSW conference and also a recent tour of China. Now in 2012, and with their debut album ready, the band’s guitarist Mark Huckridge thinks that the group’s creative forward momentum is showing no signs of slowing;  “We’ve really opened up a bit more and found our sound now” he enthuses, “the compositions are less linear and feel a bit more free.”

Those already aware of Gallops probably won’t be too surprised to learn that they recorded the album with Three Trapped Tigers’ Matt Calvert, the sessions taking place at House of Strange studios in London. TTT share a similar attitude in maintaining a light touch to their experimental cravings and it was important to have an outsider detached from the process who could take on ideas and feedback with an impartial ear. The band are unlike many others in that they refuse to settle on a specific way to write their songs; sometimes they come about as a result of an improvised idea, other times a song will emerge fully sequenced by one of the group, the rest needing to be filled in at the practice room. A perfect case in point of the almost collage-like nature of their song structures is the aforementioned ‘Crutches’, a track that apparently used to be a lot shorter until different jams and ideas kept finding their way onto the end of it, the result of playing it at the end of their live set.

This shifting strategy in the creative process helps to give their music a tremendous sense of free energy, the album constantly veering from a more orthodox guitar sound to territories as wide and varied as German kosmische, panoramic soundtracks never-to-be, and passages of minimalism and techno rhythms influenced by labels such as Cologne’s Kompakt. Indeed, Gallops happily list further, more indirect touchstones such as  Arvo Part, Sunn O))), and film score composers including Vangelis and John Carpenter, but insists again that “An important factor in the song writing process was to groove and not to overcomplicate things, which could’ve been a very easy trap to fall into. We wanted to avoid being clever for the sake of it.”

With so much coming from all sides – every member of the band bring their own ideas to the table for consideration – it’s remarkable how Yours Sincerely, Dr. Hardcore retains such a tight, lean set of tracks. Some are sprawling in their length, but every element and intersection feels completely vital, meaning that the overall experience never seems to wander during its 55 minutes. A battle between guitars and electronics is the centre piece of an LP packed with power, pace, groove and intelligence. There’s no shame in pushing yourself to your technical limits, but there is if you don’t sound like you’re having a blast doing it; it’s a viewpoint that Gallops clearly hold keenly.

Crackling Vinyl Presents The Blue Bottle Veins [+]

Free Entry Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

At barely a year old The Bluebottle Veins have certainly caused quite a stir in their short life. The group, made up of Terry Cowley, Gareth Jones, Steven Owen and Dylan Tattum, have recently exploded out of their North Wales homes to deliver their visceral mix of Rock and Roll, with a healthy dose of the blues thrown in for good measure.

Drawn together through their love of the blues as well as the classic songwriters of today and yesteryear, 2013 is looking to be The Bluebottle Veins’ year thanks to a feature in John Robb’s Louder Than War as ‘New Artist of the Day’ as well as a host of online reviews citing them as an act to lookout for.

From their unique vocals to their classic guitar hooks, The Bluebottle Veins are as exciting as new music gets. Their EP will be officially released this year.

Crackling Vinyl presents Sex Hands + Irma Vep [+]

Tuesday 19th March – Tickets £6.00 Advance

SEX HANDS

Split 12” single on Song, By Toad out now:

http://songbytoadrecords.com/paws/song-by- toad-split-12

‘Way No Way’: http://youtube.com/watch?v=FQ4ntdd7AEU

Sex Hands are three childhood best friends from North Wales, and one new pal from Manchester via Runcorn, making music inspired by the hit TV series Friends. Taking in members of NW notables Klaus Kinski, Irma Vep and Waiters, they enigmatically straddle the line between uniquely irresistible melodic delights, and unhinged macho-man party anthems. Your curiosity may already have been piqued by their recent, excellent (and free to download) collection ‘Series 1’. This though is proudly their first appearance on vinyl, and sees them flex their muscle through pulse-rasing standouts; ‘Way, No Way’, and ‘Ichiban’.

(from the IceCapades website)

“Shouted, brilliant lo-fi.”

THE LINE OF BEST FIT

“They write songs The Vaccines would give up their substantial inheritances for. They’re potentially as game changing as Pavement were. They’re Wales’ best new band.”

IRMA VEP

Limited edition vinyl LP ‘HAHA’ available now on Turquoise Coal. Promo video, of sorts: http://youtube.com/watch?v=UZRuNmPx_3Q

Irma Vep is the solo incarnation of Klaus Kinski drummer Edwin Stevens. Turquoise Coal’s debut release, HAHA is in fact the tenth full length Irma Vep album, although the `irst to appear on vinyl. We think it is the best thing we have heard in ages.

In the great tradition of drummers’ solo albums, HAHA is more ‘Oar’ than ‘No Jacket Required’, more Nixon & Jarvis than Ringo Starr, and bears little relation to Klaus Kinski’s fearsome “broken glass dipped in napalm and rammed up your nostrils” sound.

The LP is a stark, stripped down and intimate affair, achingly personal and uncompromising. Edwin plays everything himself… through amps… onto tape. The record was recorded in two days last November and the resolutely lo-`i result radiates an unpolished warmth seeped in melancholy, guilt, humour, sex, disgust and other stuff.

HAHA is no single-gear ride though – tracks like ‘What’s That in Your Mouth‘ and ‘All People Are Poison‘ see Edwin rocking out with abandon, perfectly complementing the affecting poignancy of songs like ‘There’s Nothing Wrong with Feeling Wrong‘ and ‘Be a Mother‘. Edwin reckons that HAHA is the most normal thing he’s ever done – happily on this occasion, ‘normal’ has no connection with ‘mundane’ and it turns out to also be one of the very best things he’s ever done.

You won’t hear a more human record this year. HAHA’s understated magic stands alongside the likes of the Velvet Underground’s 3rd album, Skip Spence’s “Oar”, Big Star’s 3rd, Neil Young’s “On the Beach”, Leonard Cohen’s “Songs of Love and Hate” or early Palace Brothers… without sounding at all like any of them.

The record comes as a numbered edition of 200 copies in screenprinted sleeve by Dylan Hughes with exclusive art print insert by Alexandra Humphreys together with a CD of the album so you can also groove while on the move.

Crackling Vinyl began in November 2011 as an excuse for music enthusiasts, Adam Walton, Ben ‘Soundhog’ Hayes and Elin Bach to play their favourite records in their favourite music venue (Telford’s Warehouse, Chester) far away from the weekend madness of endless requests for the kind of R&B that wasn’t pressed on Chess Records.

Crackling Vinyl evolved to encompass live music. They would bring unique and acclaimed artists to Chester for the first time, at a very affordable price: a high quality watermark in a city keen to experience the best, upcoming touring artists.

Previous live guests at Crackling Vinyl have included: Gallops, Paper Aeroplanes, Katell Keineg, Alun Tan Lan, Gulp, Zervas & Pepper, Euros Childs, Cate Le Bon, Laura J. Martin, Y Niwl, Colorama, Richard James, H. Hawkline, Mowbird, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Toy Horses, T.G. Elias, Georgia Ruth, Chris T-T, Sex Hands, Irma Vep, She Makes War, Sam Airey, Houdini Dax, The Gentle Good, Trwbador, Golden Fable, The Wellgreen, Pulco, Harry Keyworth, Greta Isaac, Atlas Twins, Jessica Ball, Sophie Ballamy, Bright Young People – a fascinating selection of artists who have graced Radio 1, 6Music, Radio 2 and Radio Wales.

Crackling Vinyl DJ’d for the whole weekend at this year’s Green Man Festival (the Walled Garden stage). We also hosted an acclaimed day of live music – and night of excellent records (including guest DJ’s Martin Carr [Boo Radleys] & Liz Hunt [The School]) – at this year’s S?n festival in Cardiff and were invited to DJ The Joy Formidable’s first North Wales show in over two years.

It has been an eventful first 12 months for Crackling Vinyl.

Crackling Vinyl’s next event is on Tuesday 19th March at Telford’s Warehouse, Chester and features Sex Hands and Irma Vep.

Crackling Vinyl also DJ stone classics from the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s: psych / soul / pop / garage / r ‘n’ b every other Friday night at Telford’s Warehouse in Chester, with live music that encompasses some of the more serrated bands that we love. Please see the website for full details.

Adam Walton* is BBC Radio Wales’ longstanding new music presenter with a particular love for lysergic soul, off kilter Welsh pop and 60’s oddities. Adam’s late night, weekend radio show is a haven for strange and original Welsh sounds.

Ben ‘Soundhog’ Hayes is one of the most respected record collectors, music enthusiasts, DJ’s and ‘bootleggers’ in the UK. At the vanguard of the new millennium’s fascination with ‘bastard pop’ Ben earned support and respect all over Europe, from the likes of XFM, MTV & BBC Radio 1. A recent return to bootlegs (Whole Lotta Helter Skelter – brilliantly grafting The Beatles to Led Zeppelin) has earned tens of thousands of views on YouTube and airplay on 6Music and Radio Wales. His DJ sets extol a kaleidoscopic love of music, particularly Moog synthesisers and compressed acoustic guitars.

Elin Bach is an artist, a librarian and record lover from Mold, Flintshire. Her philosophy is brilliant and simple: all 7”s, “nothing after 1972”. Expect to hear anything from Georgie Fame to something inspirational and half-?forgotten in the Welsh mother tongue. If you are very good, she will do a little dance behind the DJ booth. It’s a manifestation of the joy she has for the records she plays.

Siddi are the folk duo from Llanuwchllyn, consisting of brother and sister, Osian and Branwen Williams. They have been working on their new concept album, Un Tro, for two years having come across a fairy tale based in Cwm Cynllwyd, which has been used as the album’s background story – with each song telling different parts of this sad story.

As well as performing with Siddi, Branwen sings with Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, and Osian with Candelas.

Un Tro was released by I KA CHING Records in early January. A free song off the album can be downloaded from http://siddi.bandcamp.com , the full album from the usual music downloading sites, or a hard copy from http://sadwrn.com

Tuesday 2nd April – Tickets £6 Advance / £7 On The Door

Sweet Baboo

‘Let’s Go Swimming Wild’ video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMQ8h42HOJU

A native of the North Wales countryside, Sweet Baboo aka Stephen Black is a single minded, idiosyncratic singer possessing an ear for sparkling melody and a gift for a deft lyrical turn – from darkly funny to piercingly tender, twinkling boastful to deliciously self-deprecating.

Having already been shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize in 2011 for his third album ‘I’m A Dancer/Songs About Sleeping’, Black’s evolution as a songwriter and musician is still very much in motion with the new album ‘Ships’, a concept album about the sea – and a marked step up from his earlier material that reveals his true talent is only beginning to be revealed.

Influenced by the likes of The Beach Boys, Daniel Johnston and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Black indulges his love of brass heavy pop on ‘Ships’ which is released on April 22nd 2013 on Moshi Moshi Records.

Black’s productivity is all the more remarkable given his extra-curricular activities which have seen him working with an ever-growing array of musicians including Cate Le Bon, Slow Club and H. Hawkline. He has also performed with and produced Euros Childs, The Pictish Trail, The Voluntary Butler Scheme and Islet and collaborated with Gruff Rhys.

Crackling Vinyl presents… Georgia Ruth & Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog [+]

Tickets £6 Adv / £7 Door

Raised bilingually in Aberystwyth, Wales, Georgia’s haunting voice has earned her favourable comparisons with the melancholy folk sirens of the late 60s. Her unusual harp playing was inspired more by the guitar on Bert Jansch, Meic Stevens and old folk revivalist records than by the classical method she was taught as a child.

She has performed at Glastonbury, Green Man Festival, SWN and several other festivals. She has been selected as an ‘MPFree of the day’ on the 6 Music Breakfast Show. BBC Radio Wales’ Adam Walton described her as “one of the most prodigious talents ever to grace my airwaves” whilst Huw Stephens deemed her In Luna EP (released on limited 10? vinyl in 2012) “exquisite” on his Radio 1 show.

This Spring, she will be releasing her debut album – Week of Pines – on Gwymon Records. Recorded and produced by David Wrench over six days last August at Snowdonia’s Bryn Derwen studios, the record features members of acclaimed country-folk outfit Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, and a very special contribution from Lleuwen Steffan. From the motorik drive of the title track, to the darker Eno-like string arrangements, the stark joyfulness of a Welsh sea shanty accompanied by wheezing reed organ, or the more wistful folk ballads: this is a varied and intriguing collection of songs.

Georgia regularly plays in Richard James’ band and appears alongside the ex-Gorky’s member in his new project Pen Pastwn. She will also be appearing on the Guillemots’ forthcoming album, having recorded parts for it in the Summer of 2012.  She also presents a weekly music show on BBC Radio Cymru.

Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog

Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog are a three piece band consisting of brothers from Rhos Botwnnog, between the villages of Botwnnog and Llaniestyn in the Llyn Peninsula, North Wales. They experiment with country, folk and rock music. The three brothers, Iwan Hughes, Aled Hughes and Dafydd Hughes formed the band in 2006 and got a fair amount of attention from the Welsh language music scene through an early appearance on S4C’s music programme ‘Bandit’. Crackling Vinyl Presents… YNiwl [+]

Friday 24th May –

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Y Niwl is an instrumental rock band formed in North Wales in 2009. Originally a surf rock band, their style has progressed to incorporate a wider range of influences, though still retaining the instrumental aspect. Its founding members, Alun Evans (guitar), Siôn Glyn (bass) and Pete Richardson (drums) were joined by Gruff ab Arwel (organ/guitar) soon after forming, and the band released its debut single ‘Un, Dau, Tri’ in early 2010 on the Aderyn Papur label. Recorded with veteran studio engineer and producer David Wrench near their home town, a self-titled debut album was released later that year, and met with positive reviews in the UK media.

2011 saw the band accompany fellow Welsh artist Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals on a tour of the UK, Europe, USA, and Japan. As well as opening for Gruff with an instrumental set as Y Niwl, the band doubled as his backing band for the tour, as well as numerous festival appearances. This year also saw Y Niwl nominated for the inaugural Welsh Music Prize; the track ‘Undegpedwar’ from the debut album was picked up as the theme tune for the BBC One soccer show ‘Football Focus’; they also released the 7? single ‘Undegchwech/Undegsaith’.

A new drummer, Llyr Pari, was recruited in 2012, being a longtime collaborator with members of the band on various projects. They continued to tour throughout the year, supporting rock ‘n’ roll band The Jim Jones Revue on an UK tour in April, performing all over the UK as well as the Netherlands and Switzerland, and numerous nationwide radio sessions for stations such as BBC6music. Their latest release, a 6-track EP called ’4?, features the new line-up for the first time, and continues the theme of track names – all songs are named after Welsh language numbers

Here stand Three Blind Wolves. The band have sold out venues across Scotland with their wild stage presence, transfixing harmonies and captivating performances, and this year will be touring throughout the UK and beyond to entertain audiences of all generations. Recent single ‘Parade’ gained great recognition from Dermot O’Leary, Vic Galloway and John Kennedy for its emotional punch, heart-felt lyrics and sumptuous chorus. Their more country/folk influenced mini-album ‘Sound of the Storm’ was released in 2011 via Communion Records and is available to buy from the Shop section above. They have built on their ever-growing reputation across the UK and beyond with successful tours in the Netherlands which included showcasing at Eurosonic in 2012. Blow Out presents… Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Whilst relentlessly peddling their peculiar brand of Lyric-Driven Dirt-Swing™ (an incomparable rendering of jive-smitten cabaret blues) Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six have captured the imaginations of every species of listenership – both at home and overseas.

Louis Barabbas 1

Since forming in late 2006 their music has infiltrated almost every creative niche, being adapted into animated short films, burlesque routines, musical theatre, fringe festival revues, documentary soundtracks, motion picture scores and even a comic strip.

Over the years they have won praise and support from the likes of Supergrass, The Mighty Boosh, Har Mar Superstar, UB40, Mark Steel, The Hell’s Angels, BBC Radio and even the Beat Poet biographer Barry Miles – both for their furious onstage energy and Louis’ manic lyrical gymnastics.

Their infamous live shows – incorporating rock, jazz, folk and theatre influences – have proved time and time again that the group is at home on any line-up, even sharing the bill with such disparate acts as Motorhead, Sun Ra’s Arkestra, I Am Kloot, Eliza Carthy, The Blockheads, Emmanuel Jal and The Buzzcocks. In the last year alone they have toured Europe, the States and Mexico, inspiring stage invasions, dancing in the aisles and a confused mixture of exhaustion and bonhomie wherever they go.

They are signed to co-operative Manchester-based label Debt Records.

Blow Out presents… Blackbeards Tea Party [+]

Friday 22nd November

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Blackbeards Tea Party

Playing together since summer 2009, Blackbeard’s Tea Party began as a busking, function and ceilidh band, but quickly grew a reputation as a formidable live act. They soon found themselves selling out venues in their home town of York.

Word quickly spread, and the band began to play gigs further afield, including a number of noteworthy festival concerts and ceilidh bookings through 2010 and 2011. These included Sidmouth, Shrewsbury and a headline slot at Galtres, amongst others.During this time, Blackbeard’s Tea Party released an EP (Heavens to Betsy, 2009) and a full length album (Tomorrow We’ll Be Sober, 2011) to excellent critical acclaim and public response. Both were recorded in Kajunga Studios (a series of progressively bigger bedrooms) and were funded and distributed independently. After the release of Heavens to Betsy the band’s distinct sound was picked up by the BBC’s Mike Harding, who played Blackbeard’s Tea Party on BBC Radio 2’s weekly folk show.

Since the release of Tomorrow We’ll Be Sober – which R2 Magazine gave a five star rating – Blackbeard’s Tea Party have gone from strength to strength. They were recognised as one of the best live bands in the UK in the 2011 FATEA Awards and 2012 saw a long run of festival bookings, including Cambridge and Whitby, and return visits to Sidmouth and Shrewsbury, amongst others.2013 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet. In April, Blackbeard’s Tea Party issued their second full length album “Whip Jamboree” and hit the road for their first UK headline tour, playing in gig venues far and wide. The CD itself received a nationwide release through Proper Music Distribution, the UK’s biggest independent music distributor, and reached #4 on the Amazon MP3 folk charts. The upcoming Summer promises a fantastic run of festivals once again, including return visits to Sidmouth (3 consecutive years), Beverley and another headline slot at Galtres, alongside first visits to Bingley Live, Broadstairs, Holmfirth and many more. Once festival season is over, the band head out on the road again, emabarking on their second full UK tour in the Autumn, in support of “Whip Jamboree”.

In between all these shows, Blackbeard’s Tea Party can still be found busking on the streets of York, and you can also see them live at their own gigs across the country, in a local music venue, pub, folk club or living room.

Seazoo are a Welsh bedroom-pop group which formed in April 2013 and for a while consisted of two humans and a charity shop teddy bear.

After playing with Gulp, Crocodiles and bagging a slot at Cardiff’s Swn Festival; SEAZOO now consist of five proper humans. The teddy often stays at home, jaded by his short experience in the industry. He was shit anyway.

Blow Out presents… The Kindest Of Thieves [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Kindest Of Thieves 1

Kindest of Thieves are songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Christopher J Fox and drummer Samuel L Lightfoot. Their dark, brooding, gothy and frankly noisy brand of rock & roll and roots music is unavoidably enjoyable. Whether their music is too melancholic or their live show is too intense for your tastes, you can’t be help but be perversely drawn in to the world in which Kindest of Thieves live and seethe.
Enigmatic songwriter Christopher J Fox pours his struggle with mental illness and misanthropic preaching’s into songs that sound truly liberating when accompanied by some of the biggest hooks and most aggressive guitar playing and drumming you’re likely to hear this year. Anthems for the downtrodden. Drummer Samuel L Lightfoot thrashes at his meagre drum kit, giving the listener the impression that he is sadistically giving the songs welts and lacerations to punctuate the macabre lyrics. A truly extraordinary match of two musicians.
Kindest of Thieves have thrust five releases onto the unsuspecting public this year, with another EP set for release before the year is through. Their gigging schedule has been equally as relentless, and a list of the venues they’ve assaulted with their mere presence this year is available by request.

Baskery [+]

Free Before 9pm, £4 Thereafter

Advanced tickets available from www.seetickets.com

Baskery 1

Baskery are three sisters from Sweden, the sound is all about turning music on its head, blending the straight forwardness of punk with the subtlety of roots and Americana

Baskery will be touring their latest release “LITTLE WILD LIFE” in the UK in the Autumn of 2014.

No matter where they go in the world, people tell the sisters that they’ve never heard or seen anything like it, that they have a completely unique sound and perform with what seems to be an inexhaustible energy. That’s Baskery’s aim, to never stop surprising. Baskery is a band built on what three people can do together. The music is not to be confused with country or bluegrass just because they play a double bass, a six string banjo and acoustic guitar.

The three sisters can’t recall when or why they started playing, the music’s always just been there. “Performing live has become the most natural thing to us”. That’s where the high energy level on stage hails from, a pure and reckless love to the art of performing music.

“Little Wild Fire is loaded with trenchant vitality” – 4/5 stars, Gareth Hayes, R2

“A jewel of an album, it grows and grows with each listen as the voices and the arrangements bury themselves as ear worms. ” – Keith Hargreaves, Americana UK

“Little Wild Life … is alive, exciting, melodic”. 5/5 – Paul Riley, Country Music People

“Frenetically energetic…a distinctively individual band sound primed to hone in on the mainstream” – MOJO (Colin Irwin)
